About the fake Jarre's Laser Harp, I believe it truly worked in the China and Houston concerts. I recall Jarre describing how it worked on an interview. Nonetheless, there is no doubt that in later concerts it was only for the visual effect, since at times there is a noticeable lack of precision in the movement of hands (such as uninterrupting the beam by accident). > From my information the light beams also did not work in the > Cunningham production too. Paulo, have you any more info on this? To the best of my knowledge, from what I read on the literature, everything worked as intended. Besides several photoelectric cells on stage, there were twelve antennae (which worked like Theremins) and several contact mikes on the props on stage. I think a Cage performance with such devices would hardly be simply for the visual effect to impress the audience. Much of it took the obvious advantage of the visual effect but it was always devised to affect performance. I believe WCW uses mostly "clearing house" music (is that the right term? Nondescript backing music you won't get sued for using, cheap license) - I've heard this particular theme behind news reports, etc. The best way to describe it is "generic techno" which is actually a pretty awful description, but there you go. I'm pretty sure KW had nothing to do with it, and I'm almost as sure Jimmy Hart had nothing to do with it, too. Another WCW wrestler theme (Harlem Heat) is frequently misidentified as "Musique Non Stop" on r.s.p-w because of an awful lot of KW sampling from (surprise) "Musique Non Stop". I read an article written by Cunningham himself about variation v, in which he describes the problems they had getting the light beam instrument to work properly.=20 Also they found that the metal 'pylons' they also attempted to use (as giant theremins) were a disaster. Not sure why though.... It seems that, along with kraftwerk, they were having trouble with light diffusion, a problem that would only be solved with the advent of cheap laser technology!!=20 This of course was not really available to either party during these periods, whereas it is now, with Jarre effectively using the instrument. I think I may have seen the same interview as you if it is the one filmed in London, where he demonstrates the light being interrupted to trigger (probably via a midi interface) any sound source he requires. ciao, - -------------------------------------------- Jules Seifert 'The Voice of Energy' #Kraftwerk IRC Homepage:- http://wkweb5.cableinet.co.uk/jseifert/kraftwerk/irc.htm # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Email majordomo@xmission.com with "info kraftwerk" in the message. # Postings must go to kraftwerk@xmission.com -- replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 27 Aug 1997 11:53:42 +0200 From: Lars Bull Subject: (kw) New album news OK, I was one of those who instigated the discussion on when the new album will be out and if it really is going to be a NEW album or a re-release. First of all you gotta have some kind of small digital portable recorder. DAT or MD will do just fine. Then you'll have to borrow two VERY small, VERY I repeat: V E R Y expensive microphones (try the "I want to buy these, but I would like to try them for a couple of days first, here's my drivers license to guarantee I will return..." method). I would personally prefer a condensormic. with built in batteries which can hold for at least 110dB! Well if you got that, you've allready got three problems on your hands: 1 How to record right 2 How to get it in 3 And how place yourself in the crowd. My suggestions is: 1 Well, get a NON-squeling (use a lot of honeybalm) thick leather-jacket with shoulderstraps. Underneath the straps you make holes just big enough for the mics. Then you have to fill up the space (5-15mm) between the straps and the jacketleather on top of you shoulder with some sort of speakerfoam in the same colour as the jacket (invisible!!!) so that the sound can get in to the mics you have put with really strong gaffa-tape (Stage-tape) on the inside of you jacket. Use outwashed cotton to damp any squeals made by the tape. Take of any dingling metal objects on your clothes...Well your not stupid!!! - Just try it out at home first! Ask Mom to yell in the kitchen... )-0 2 The chances to get the equipment in depends on your face thru the ticketbox, the SIZE of your recorder, how good you were on covering the mic's under the straps, your friends, your face on the way out ;-) 3 Well, the engineer just might be drunk and just happens to have an outlet from the mixerdesk JUST FOR YOUR DAT!!!!!!! :-D :-D:-D:-D...dream on...Place yourself in the mittle of the crowd just at that distance from the speakers equal to that which lies between them...Got it? The Trianglespot! Now tell your totally wacked neigbours around you that you are bootlegging and that they get a record if they can shut up during the concert. Then just check your in-level gain when the Artist walks up on stage (people screaming!), hit the red button and don't move a finger until they are off stage, don't clap, don't fart, don't burp, don't breathe!...(just remember the total time on your media!!!) after all you are recording a historic event - Just feel it! ...by the way... Squeeling leatherjackets and shitty microphones can be heard on KRAFTWERKS "Heute Abend" 2CD bootleg album. I've got it! Sorry for my bad English & my totally off topic text... It is a class 3 laser. It is interesting to note that according to classification (as the guidelines published by ANSI) only class 4 lasers are hazardous to the skin. I find it hardly believable that they would use such a laser, even if causing slight burns, in such a way. If you care to take a look at the security measures imposed by the international norms, you'd see that it would be an astonishing display of carelessness on the part of people which seem a quite professional crew. There is no justification to use a dangerous device when a non-dangerous one would provide the same results (a change in optical intensity in the detector cells). - -- __|__ ___\_/___ Paulo Mouat, ___ mouat@mail.telepac.pt |___| http://www.geocities.com/Vienna/8804/ |___| # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Email majordomo@xmission.com with "info kraftwerk" in the message. # Postings must go to kraftwerk@xmission.com -- replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 27 Aug 1997 20:24:06 -0700 From: "ROBOT" Subject: (kw) Meeting KW Fans & German Tourists Guten Tag, Fellow WERKazoids! This may SEEM like a "frivolous" post, but, please share my JOY! It is a sheer pleasure to meet other KW Fans as well as Tourists from Germany & all over the Universe.... I had such a great day today, after getting off to a shaky start- Literally! -(Demolition on the big ratty old building attatched to our house....)- When I first got into town at noon, I ran into some KW Fans! I heard some guys talking about the internet, told 'em my name/address, "Just look for KRAFTWERK & STAR TREK, you'll find me.", and they said, "KRAFTWERK?!! YEAH!!" and showed me a bunch of familiar KW print-outs off the Net. -(Album covers, etc- the usual stuff we all know & love.)- They liked my "silly" K-shirt, too! They want to print up their own shirts as well, from some of the pictures they showed me. KooL! I mentioned the KW Mail List, but, I don't know if they're on it. -(Guys?? It's me- the *FREAK* you met at the Laundromat. KYTE me!)- I've met a few Fans here and there in my travels. It's always a thrill! Anyway, the main reason I had gone into town was to meet with a local KW Fan late this afternoon, but, he couldn't make it. We'll meet another day, no prob. -(He had to cover an injured co-worker's shift. I hope all is well!)- But, then, because he had to cancel, I ended up being in the right place at the right time to meet a very nice young couple from Germany. Okay- I'm waiting for the bus, a car pulls over, they're looking at a map, - -(Tourist Alert!)-, so I step up and offer directions. They're asking how many hours to San Fransisco -(from Eureka, CA)-, and we chat a bit. Naturlich, I detected the lovely accent and asked where they're from: "Germany". -!!!!- Ofcourse the first words out of my mouth were, "Kennen Sie KRAFTWERK?". I stepped back to show 'em my K-shirt, did a few ROBOTiK moves, and got a very cheerful response! Sure, they're familiar with "AUTOBAHN" & "Die ROBOTER", usw. So, we talked a bit more, mostly pertaining to travel, and, "TschuS!", they went on their merry way. Then, I got home on the bus, told a neighbor about these nice folks, described them & the car, and he says, "You're kidding! I was just talking to 'em at the -(Loleta)- Cheese Factory about 20 minutes ago!". D'OH!! If only I'd had the 'noive' -(nerve)- to ask 'em for a ride- just so I could point and yell "KRAHFTVAIRK!" as we drive past the local power plant! - -(Built on an Earthquake fault, no less- And, it's RADIOAKTIV!)- Oh, what a day! Beautiful weather, too- schoenes Wetter heute! It just goes to show- sometimes it's very rewarding being a KW FanatiK! But, when you're looking for Albums/Konzert info, it can be a major pain in the @$$, eh? You people in Europe have ALL the Luck!*grrrr*! ps: *HEEHEE* I really liked JBV's "FlameBait" and 303's "BootLeg Tips"- Very SOUND advice! I beg to differ. English is my only language, and I've been a devoted KW fan since I discovered them. So maybe I don't understand some of the lyrics. That's not important to me since I listen for the music instead of the lyrics. > For instance, those english-speaking people who pronounce KW as > "craftwork" always pissed me off. How is it supposed to be pronounced? I say it that way though some people might say I say it more like "craftwerk". The silly DJs around here try to say it "krrruftverk". > How stupid my postings can be ? you have no idea... Practice makes perfect. :) > Flame me, please, flame me ! We all have differing views on the merits of bootlegs, and I myself don't mind buying or swapping if they are any good. But, and this is the big but(t), IMHO there is a fine line between the enjoyment of a concert, and recording quality.=20 Y'see, I (like I'm sure a lot of others) have made numerous recordings of various artists (for my own pleasure mind) right back to 1983. Now if you get too picky about the end result you end up with a great recording, but a lousy memory of the gig! Thus, in kraftwerk's case I tend (if possible) to try to rely on the professional bootleggers so I can enjoy the experience of the gig myself. Unfortunately again this has a detrimental effect in that their is a profit margin involved, it's a vicious circle.=20 What do you do? Well, kraftwerk as we know do not tour extensively (at the moment!), thus recordings are far harder to obtain. At the same time you don't want to waste what opportunity you have by worrying about levels and squeaks if you've paid good money to see them. Answer - - again leave it to the professionals!! Sounds bad I know, but why not just enjoy the gig yourself?? Lastly, I feel it would be more prudent if list members don't divulge bootlegging techniques!! (at least on-list) There's nothing wrong with the act, but don't let 'em catch you 'cos you laid your own trap!! I got a great recoding of the Tribal Gathering from a list member, but he kept a low profile, so as not to damage his chances of making future recordings.=20 sheesh. - -------------------------------------------- Julian Seifert jseifert@cableinet.co.uk London, UK # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Email majordomo@xmission.com with "info kraftwerk" in the message. # Postings must go to kraftwerk@xmission.com -- replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ End of kraftwerk Digest V3 #129 ******************************* To subscribe to kraftwerk Digest, send the command: subscribe kraftwerk-digest in the body of a message to "majordomo@xmission.com".
