OK... my name is Craig, I'm 24 and I like in the US. I just recently got into the music of Kraftwerk. My first exposure to them was in 1983/4 when "Tour De France" was out and it was one of the cuts we used to blast while breakdancing on the streets of Philly, and sadly enough the version I have on vinyl is that by 10 Speed on a Ktel album... anyway, recently, while looking through the Rolling Stone Top 100 albums issue, I spotted TEE in there and started quizzing my friend (a KW fan for some time) about the album. He was so sure I would love it that he bought it for me that day as a very early birthday present, and that started the fascination. Since then I rediscovered the movie Breakin', where TDF is played (something I had forgotten about), noticed the KW riff in "Planet Rock", I actually heard the intro of The Mix version of "Robots" on some commercial in the car the other day. Boy, I'm deep in this one... they're following me. So much in fact, that I checked out the last year of archives while working midnight shift this past weekend. I was quite intrigued. I followed those little flame wars like soap operas. :) And the accounts of TG were enough to make me shiver... The thought of possibly never being able to see KW in the US is quite saddening. Lots of cool stuff to read I must say... What I'm trying to say basically is that this is a great list and I'm very happy to have found it! The people that responded to my last post (about the TG setlist) were most kind. Now, hopefully I can find a way to participate... ;) Craig Smith effigy@voicenet.com http://www.voicenet.com/~effigy # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Email majordomo@xmission.com with "info kraftwerk" in the message. # Postings must go to kraftwerk@xmission.com -- replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 02 Sep 1997 11:41:00 GMT From: jseifert@cableinet.co.uk (Jules Seifert) Subject: Re: (kw) Paparazzi Jon Alsbury wrote: >those who are loudly condemning the press and the photographers >they pay right now are the self same people who rush out and buy >the tabloids whenever there is a diana story. what breathtaking >hypocrisy. here here. I hardly think that the > paparazzi would do the same for them! I wonder why R&F have this great obsession with secrecy? Is it simply because it is a deliberate, integral part of the Kraftwerk concept, or maybe they're just very shy, introverted people. I've never heard or seen Florian speak in an interview - infact I'm not sure Florian has ever given an interview - I don't recall ever reading or hearing one. Ralf always looks genuinely uncomfortable in interviews to me - he is very quiet and reserved. Often appearing extremely nervous, he avoids direct eye contact and gives very little away. Wolfgang and Karl aren't like that in the interviews they've given since they left. They seem to find it easier to be more open, and dare I say it - human! Perhaps, like many great but 'tortured' artists, R&F find it hard to form relationships with others. maybe they are afraid of getting close to others - or maybe they just want people to focus on the music and not the makers of that music. maybe they are similar to the alienated artist who feels completed to create, through their art, an environment that they have total control over - they are completely safe within the world of their music, or painting, or whatever. they have no desire, or the emotional capacity, to interact with others outside of that personal private world. who knows? I don't, maybe I'm talking complete bollocks! jon. # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Email majordomo@xmission.com with "info kraftwerk" in the message. # Postings must go to kraftwerk@xmission.com -- replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 02 Sep 1997 19:38:04 +0200 From: mars.sjoestrand@stockholm.mail.telia.com Subject: Re: (kw) KW / CD for swap Hi! Housephone is on the B-side of Telephone Call 12" (both UK and German versions). There was also a UK only 12" Housephone test pressing, though I haven't seen one myself. The track itself is a pretty drastic re-working rather than re-mix - no vocals but plenty of 'dial again dial again!' Hello boys and girls, yesterday evening, I finally took the time to download the short QT movie from the official KW site. First, it took 50 mn to get the stuff (which is quite slow for 3.5 Mb through ISDN), but it didn't matter : they were playing Star Wars on TV. But then, it was the biggest deception in my (long) life ! First, the graphics on the site are awful (Emil, where are you ?)... Second, why did you all get excited by that 30 min stamp-sized joke ? You know what it reminds me ? Those stupid spacey music bands from the 1st half of the 70s (like Space) who thought they could lure the audience and make us forget about their lack of musical inspiration by wearing silly space suits and shooting videos in pseudo-21st century urban landscapes... They really look ridiculous with thoose greenish suits and cheap glasses ! And I'm even sure the soundtrack has nothing to do with the movie : they just cut some footage from a soundcheck or some rehearsal and put some background noise on it. And as for the music, as a radio DJ, I wouldn't even use it as a commercial background, or to just fill 1 min of blank until the news or the weather forecasts... Some of you might think that I take some perverse pleasure by systematically bashing KW. Most of the time, it's only tongue-in-cheek stuff, but this time, I think I have tons of good reasons to do so... I wonder if I'm not gonna sell my tickets to Karlsruhe & Linz... Hey, R&F !
