Darn ... I should have bought dozens of them when I bought mine! What should this be priced at? He has it higher than the Heart to Heart book by $45. According to a mailing, he has numerous copies of each. Keith - I was out book scouting today and ran across a couple of gold rush books I wanted your opinion on. 1. The Gold Rush Letters by Lewis Osborn - 1967 $40 2. Gold Rush Diary; Thomas D. Clark - 1967 $35 3. Grimshaws Narrative; 1964 $65 What are the better titles with good LDS content? --Steve ------=_NextPart_000_001E_01C16490.8EB3C9A0 Content-Type: application/ms-tnef; name="winmail.dat" book or pamphlet, "Joseph Smith The Prophet-Teacher" written by Brigham H. Roberts with an introduction by Sterling McMurrin. BHR quotes out of a book called "Figures of the Past" written by Josiah Quincy in relationship to Joseph Smith. I am interested in buying a first edition of this quoted work but when I do a search, I receive listings for Figures of the Past and Figures of the Past: From the Leaves of Old Journals. Are both of these titles one in the same? I believe this book was republished in 1926 and 1st published in 1883. I don't know how to tell you how to find it, given the way it appears under the heading of "Joseph Smith in Nauvoo," - probably a nightmare to search - but it is record #646692 if you watch the little window at lower left of your screen. Or, if that does not work, do a search within quotes as follows: "it is by no means improbable" You will get many hits, since there are many citations from this account in Conference Reports and the like, but you will eventually come to it. We all know the inspirational parts of this narrative. Here is a part you don't hear quoted so often in Sunday School . . . << I should not say quite all that struck me about Smith if I did not mention that he seemed to have a keen sense of the humorous aspects of his position. "It seems to me, General," I said, as he was driving us to the river, about sunset, "that you have too much power to be safely trusted to one man." "In your hands or that of any other person," was the reply, "so much power would, no doubt, be dangerous. I am the only man in the world whom it would be safe to trust with it. Remember, I am a prophet!" The last five words were spoken in a rich, comical aside, as if in hearty recognition of the ridiculous sound they might have in the ears of a Gentile. I asked him to test his powers by naming the successful candidate in the approaching presidential election. "Well, I will prophesy that John Tyler will not be the next president, for some things are possible and some things are probable; but Tyler's election is neither the one nor the other." We then went on to talk of politics. . . .>> - LDS-Bookshelf, information and discussion of LDS books - To unsubscribe, send an email to "majordomo@xmission.com" with - "unsubscribe lds-bookshelf" (without quotes) in the message body. - For assistance, mail to "lds-bookshelf-owner@lists.xmission.com" ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "Albert Gardner" Subject: Re: [LDS-Bookshelf] Figures of the Past Date: 04 Nov 2001 21:54:34 -0700 Phil-the visit with Joseph Smith is at the end of the book, pages 376-400. I bought this book over a month ago and I have been telling Mormon's every where about this new book of scripture, but I forgot to tell my brothers and sisters on LDS-Bookshelf. This scripture gives us writing that were sealed with Moroni (or was it Nephi) and now for the first time a Prophet has revealed them to us. This Prophet (or maybe it's profit) has pictures of the Urim and Thummim and his scribes writing down these precious words from ancient tablets. He even has pictures of his scribes who must be wives(?) or followers. Incredibly he shows us pictures of the tablets! Our Prophet is from the RLDS persuasion, but I am sure he is no longer a member. This incredible piece of scripture was sold to me by my good friend Hugh McKell. I believe Hugh would never lead me astray and I have found great joy in this new scripture. I hope all of you go out and buy this new discovery. I am sure your joy will be as complete as mine. Has anyone read or heard about "The Bear River Massacre" by Newell Hart? Again my good friends at Benchmark suggest I buy this second printing. A note is found on the copyright page explaing that the first printing of 500 sold out quickly, so they printed up this second printing in November 1983. They also print a letter from the Shoshone-Bannock tribes to the Newell Hart family giving their condolences and thanking them for Newell Harts setting the record straight about the massacre. Another interesting book Benchmark found for me is "Mormon's Story". Maybe Brian Romriel will explain why this book should be of interest to us. My understanding is that this book caused a bit of a concern with the leadership of the church. It is an easy to read Book of Mormon. I think this and Lynn Matthews Anderson's "Easy To Read BOM" came out about the same time. Lots of people looked but few seemed to be buying. But this begs for us to start a new list - Books of "Mormon" scripture other than the "Standard Works." One candidate is a small tome I picked up for $3 in New York: Crossfield, R. C., BOOK OF ONIAS, 1969, New York An excerpt from the Foreword: The Word of God, given to the Prophet Onias comprising sections 1 to 22 of the Book of Onias, received at various intervals from March 1961 to this date. (Also a Revelation on the Nature of God and the creation.) This material is not authorized by the Trustee in Trust of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and should be read only as non-authorized scripture. Discretion should be used in placing this in the hands of the ignorant and those who would use it to discredit the Church. It is not the purpose of the author, in presenting this to the Church membership, to ridicule or criticize the Church but to present the revelations for their judgment. These revelations should in no way be construed as encouraging dissension or apostasy from the Church, for these revelations prove beyond a doubt that the Church is the only Church recognized by God on the earth today. Mostly babble but a few interesting things like calling David O. McKay to repentance and telling the Assistants to the Twelve that they have no standing since there was no such thing in the New Testament. I suspect Brother Crossfield became Mr. Crossfield over this little gem. Keith At 07:57 PM 11/9/01 -0800, Joe Geisner wrote: >I need to repent. But this begs for us to start a new list - Books of  "Mormon" scripture other than the "Standard Works."

One candidate is a small tome I picked up for $3 in New York:

Crossfield, R. C., BOOK OF ONIAS, 1969, New York

An excerpt from the Foreword:
The Word of God, given to the Prophet Onias comprising sections 1 to 22 of the Book of Onias, received at various intervals from March 1961 to this date.  (Also a Revelation on the Nature of God and the creation.)

This material is not authorized by the Trustee in Trust of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and should be read only as non-authorized scripture.

Extra. August 24, 1985. N.p. [c.1985 The Journal of Mathematical Theology . . .] 21 1/2 cm. Single sheet folded to form [4] pages. Front wrapper illustrated in color from Harry Anderson's "The Second Coming." Weird, and evidently one of only fifty examples printed, numbered carefully in blue ink in a corner of the back page, "14/50." I am competent neither to comprehend this publication nor to guess whether it was issued in dead earnest or in jest. Printed on an ordinary blank LDS ward program sheet (produced by Press Publishing, Provo, Utah), this curiosity reproduces seven short music passages - without lyrics -by composers ranging from Mozart to John Lennon, assembled under the heading, "A performing edition of the musical portions of the Book of Revelation." It was in nice shape, minimal shelf ware to the corenrs and foot of the spine. The front hinge has seen better days and shows some early cracking, but the pages are all in tact. The book was signed on one of the FEP's by the following (I'm quoting the signatures, etc.): Chas. J. Sorenson Hyrum, Utah Willard Homer, Haden Fremont Co., Idaho James A. Andersen Laketown Utah Bruce Hamilton Calders Sta Utah Salt Lake Co. The signatures all appeared to be in the same fountain pen. It is an interesting item, and I have already spoken with the Church Missionary Dept. and Richard Turley about detrermining if the four men were Elders in the Northern States Mission around 1908. The signatures really make this an interesting copy, in my mind. Wonder why they all signed it?? I got this for $87. What are the 1908 vols. worth, I wonder? --Steve ------=_NextPart_000_0013_01C1784B.526DEA60 Content-Type: application/ms-tnef; name="winmail.dat" Content-Transfer-Encoding: base64 The Tanner Trust Fund and the J. Willard Marriott Library University of Utah Proudly Announce Volume XV of the series Utah, the Mormons, and the W est A Winter with the Mormons The 1852 Letters of Jotham Goodell - Edited by David L. Bigler - Preface by George Miles Jotham Goodell's letters, originally published at Portland in The Oregonian in 1852 and republished here for the first time, offer c onsiderable insight into the origins and character of the animosity between Mormons and those they called "Gentiles" in early Deseret and Utah Territory. Goodell's observations, made at a time of uneasy truce, help us understand fundamental conflicts that came to a head in 1857 when President Buchanan sent one-third of the federal army marching toward Salt Lake City in what has ever since been known as the Utah War. - George Miles Jotham Goodell on a Winter with the Mormons "With much regret we had been compelled to turn aside from our journey, and spend the winter among the Mormons," Oregon pioneer Jotham Goodell recalled in 1852. "Having been compelled to this decision, I resolved to pass the winter as quietly as possible." Goodell's winter with the Mormons turned out to be anything but peaceful. Jotham and "Annie" Goodell camped with their seven children during the winter of 1850-1851 in a tent and wagons on the Ogden River near the new Mormon settlements. Afterward, in nine detailed letters to The Oregonian newspaper at Portland, the Presbyterian minister angrily described their experiences and bitterly protested the persecution they suffered at the hands of Mormon authorities. Published in 1852, his reaction stands in sharp contrast to the often-f avorable opinions of Gold Rush emigrants who spent only a few days in Salt Lake Valley before hurrying on to the placer diggings along the west slope of the Sierra Nevada. Long ignored, Goodell's writings throw needed light on the nature of Mormon societ y as it existed during its early days in the Great Basin. They identify the earliest sources of conflict between the western theocracy and other Americans that led President Buchanan to order troops to Utah in 1857 to enforce federal authority. And they reflect the militant posture of the young millennial movement during the transition from the State of Deseret, an independent nation-state created in 1849, to an American territory with the unasked-for name of Utah. After leaving Ohio in spring 1850, the Goodells reached present Wyoming too late to attempt a crossing to Oregon and decided to winter on the fringe of new Mormon settlements. It was a decision they would regret. Not a rich man to begin with, Goodell became so impoverished by spring that he wa s unable to move his family without help from other emigrants. He expressed his outrage: "Were Brigham Young to come in person and tender back the money he robbed us of, there is not a man among us but would exclaim: 'Your money perish with you!'" Now republished for the first time, the letters of Jotham Goodell are required reading for anyone who wishes to understand the causes of controversy between a defiant territory, named after its native inhabitants, and its parent republic, prior to Utah statehoo d. As these letters make clear, the Latter-day Saints' belief that they would "reduce all nations and creeds to one political and religious standard" was a revolutionary task. Goodell's story provides a new perspective on one of America's most remarkable millennial movements and its inevitable conflict with the young republic in which it was born. David L. Bigler David L. Bigler is a native of Provo, Utah, and a naval veteran of World War II and Korea. He is the retired director of public affairs for U.S. Steel, now USX Corp. Benchmark should have copies in the store tomorrow or Monday at the latest. Red dj. Black cloth spine and red cloth over boards. Quite a striking looking book - designed by Will Bagley at the Prairie Dog Press and published thru OCTanner foundation of UoU. 1000 copies in the trade edition if I remember. Goodell was a contemporary of Nelson Slater of Fruits of Mormonism. Goodell published his experiences with the Oregonian and Bigler published it in book form for the first time with this book. Goodell did not have a happy time with the Saints and his account is colored in that direction for sure but nevertheless it gives us an idea of how gentiles viewed the saints in 1852. I think it is going to be a winner. hjm - LDS-Bookshelf, information and discussion of LDS books - To unsubscribe, send an email to "majordomo@xmission.com" with - "unsubscribe lds-bookshelf" (without quotes) in the message body. - For assistance, mail to "lds-bookshelf-owner@lists.xmission.com"
