OK all you creative geniuses.... I'm still working on Senior Night & we have a great program planned thanks to all of you... especially Jennifer & Shiela for your help!!! Ü My question now is... does anyone have ideas for decorating a huge gym for this event? Decorating is just not my thing! The theme is "A Moment in Time" --- we stuck with something VERY generic (boring?) that would work with the different things we wanted to incorporate into this evening. We are doing the time-capsules (thanks Shiela Ü) so that they can "capture" this special 'moment of time' in their lives. We are giving them scrapbooking items to get them started keeping their scrapbooks for college (recording the special "moments" of their lives in the future) Also, a video production sharing past "moments of their lives" (pictures, stories, etc. of growing up & advice, etc. for future moments ....) We even sent the seniors their invitations with confetti, etc & graduation candy in the mail in a clear plastic capsule (as in time-capsule) or bottle (as in time in a bottle???ÜÜÜ) OK! It's kind of a "stretch"!!! but they were VERY cute & the grads went bezerk (sp?) over them. One dad said his daughter was in tears by the time she got to the bottom of the bottle where she found a chocolate kiss that the little paper said "We love you" instead of the "Kisses" paper. (Others said "class of '98" & Congratulations Grad!") I guess she felt very loved! Anyway... You get the idea I'm sure.... we are talking MOMENTS, TIME, ???? Ü Sooooo.... do any of you creative wonders have ideas for decorating the gym??? Some years we go generic with just balloons, confetti, checked tablecloths, streamers in red & black (school colors)... Other years we've gone with the theme for that year... Oh the Places You'll Go, etc. etc. Any ideas would be wonderful as my brain just isn't coming up with too much! Thank -you sooooo much!!! Stacey, This is coming to me as I type, so it may not be as practical when I am done typing as it seems right now... How about giving the sr's those disposable cameras to take pictures at the Senior Night, develop the pictures and put them in their time capsules without letting them see them. I'd say put the cameras in but you never know what might happen to the film. Are you going to keep the time capsules for them or send them home with them that night. That's just an idea that might be a hit with the kids, maybe not with your budget. Yes... budget wise that would be difficult... but that would be fun. They would LOVE it! We are sending them home with them. They are in the paint cans so we'll pound the lids on good & tight! They are soooooo cute! It says Time-Capsule and the date underneath that. Then a picture of them and their name underneath. Then around the rest of the can we did all the names of the general authorities, stake presidency, bishopric, young women leaders & all the young women (no guys are graduating this year) just like you suggested. I used a really cute font "FunStuff" & it is in red (school colors). I think they will love them. I used the questions you gave me, but added a few others. They will put that ("letter to myself"), their testimony, their favorite candy bar, pictures of important people, & any other items that are important to them right now in their life or that reflect their life in the time capsule. At the Senior Night, they will put everything in & we will ask each one to share with everyone a couple of things they are putting in & why... also a couple answers from their "letter to myself". I gave him up for adoption. I was not LDS nor did I belong to any religion, but I certainly was raised with the concept that premarital sex was wrong. The boy was LDS and had been my boyfriend for 2 years prior to my getting pregnant. He will be 20 this month(the child not the boyfriend). I wish him well and hope he has had a wonderful childhood. I did all I could do give it to him. I married two years after I had him and have had three children (and just graduated from college). I believe with all my heart that my Heavenly Father has forgiven me and applaudes the things I've done to correct my life and be selfless for my baby. It was VERY difficult to give him up after 29 hours of labor. I thought of him not me. My oldest daughter was invited to 4 baby showers in her freshman year in high school (all non-members, and all freshmen too). She was disgusted. One was her second child. For the member girls that do get pregnant we should support them to be selfless and do what is best for the child. Then help them change their lives so they can get married in the covenant and have lots more babies they can enjoy to their hearts content! I think the problem has been that we see the word abortion and we are so offended because we are so spiritually sensitive and the word is so ugly in all it represents that we don't want these sweet young women exposed to it. Hooray for us! This is a good thing! The truth is that it is an abhorrent sin which compounds the ugly sin of immorality. It is equal, in every way, to the sin of immorality and surpasses it in is serious consequences. It is not equal to the sin of murder, but is placed right under it. (In some of the recent practices--I'm not sure that someone won't be held accountable for murder!) It can be repented of, but the repentance will not be easy or pleasant. It is a heartbreaking sign of the degeneracy of our times. When we've heard it addressed in General Conference, however, we have not been offended. Why is that? Because it is not spoken of casually. We don't have to go into the ugly details (and we don't have to see the slides, which I don't think that were ever intended for the Young Women's program!) We decry the practice as a horrible abomination! It is a form of genocide! I'm glad we have not become so desensitized that we don't cringe when we see or hear the word! I thank my Heavenly Father for our wonderful leaders that can speak up for righteousness and goodness. I thank Him for each of you! I am grateful to have a place where I can go and still find that there are people who have values and beliefs that reflect the Lord's standards! So, I say hooray! Hooray for lesson manuals! I just wanted to share a little bit of a special evening that we had this past Friday. Our Stake Young Women's Presidency has just begun an annual tradition by having a Stake Young Womanhood Recognition Night. It was so-o-o-o wonderful to have these girls receive their recognitions in front of all their Stake and Ward leaders , as well as their families. The Beehives, Mia Maids, and Laurels also received their "Certificates of Progress" so that each girl was recognized in some way. The Stake Presidency also presented each Graduating Laurel with their very own Personlized red journal (for individual worth). All the young women and leaders sang the song "I am of Infinite Worth". This is a beautiful song and helped set the tone of the meeting. Each ward was responsible for choosing one of the seven values and decorating a table to demonstrate each value. The most exciting and most memorable part of the evening for me was the part where I was able to be presented with a Young Womanhood Recognition medallion of my very own !!!!! I have completed all the necessary requirements to receive this medallion as an adult leader!!! This medallion means so very much to me!! You see, I am a convert to the church, and never had the opportunity to go through the personal progress program as a youth!! Earning my medallion, along with my young women in my ward, has given me a greater testimony of the personal progress program. Sisters, I know that this program is an inspired program !!! I bear my testimony to you, that I know that if we can get our young women to love this program, that we will be helping these girls to prepare for their divine purposes in this life. I applaud all of you for your individual efforts in working with this program. I have experienced many of the same frustrations, challenges, dissapointments that all of you face!! I am so grateful for a forum such as this list where we can all "pool" our ideas and "resource" each other!! I think Heavenly Father would be pleased with this! Thanks, from the bottom of my heart, for all of the ideas, thoughts, and kind words that have been shared!! Grateful to be a Sister in Zion, Michele Knegt YW Pres. in S. Maybe you could just collect the cameras and not say anything else about them for another year. If you wrote everyone's name on the camera as they turn it in and then on the pictures when they are developed, it would be a fun way to surprise them in a year (or whenever you have specified for them to open the capsules). Maybe that way you could develop one or two rolls of film a month over the next year and not have it be such a big hit on your budget all at once. That would be an excellent way to remove some of the decorating burden from your own shoulders. If you sectioned off portions of the walls and maybe some tables and dedicated one section to each senior you could tell the parents the theme and have them take it from there. It's great! Our year is calendared so we all have the lesson schedule for the whole year. So, next week we have a guest speaker (1st Sunday of every month) and then we will be doing lesson 16. It works for us!!! On Mon, 01 Jun 1998 12:47:42 -0700 Brewer writes: >Here's a question for you: do you all jump around in the lesson >manual >or start at the beginning and go straight through?
