My daughter said that it seemed like "every lesson was just what I needed". I am a fairly new 2nd counselor. We just got a new advisor for the Beehives. Our previous advisor was going straight through the book doing the lessons in order. I counseled our new advisor to pray for inspiration as to which lesson to give. I just asked her to pencil in the date of each lesson in the table of contents of the lesson manual so we could keep track of when each lesson was given. I also found it very enlightening. Kathy S. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We have the good fortune in our stake to enjoy President Joseph Fielding McConkie as a member of our stake presidency and a model teacher. He shared a poignant lesson with a YW group during one of our ward conferences about patriarchal blessings. He recalled the story of Hyrum Smith (President McConkie's direct ancestor) when Hyrum was called as Patriarch. A young man came to Hyrum Smith asking for a patriarchal blessing. Patriarch Smith was very pressed for time and told this young man to go home and prayerfully write his own blessing then bring it back to Hyrum to be signed. President McConkie then went on to ask the girls what they would write as a part of their own blessings if they were asked to do that. The girls were quite vocal in sharing their desires of wanting promises of an eternal family, good health, etc. Then President McConkie opened up the scriptures and read passages that stated the same promises each of the girls desired (it helps to be a scriptorian!). His point was we have a divine patriarchal blessing printed in the pages of the standard works. The promised blessings therein are conditional upon our obedience. One of the primary purposes for our obtaining patriarchal blessings from our local patriarchs is to have our lineage stated. Of course, we often focus more on the specific blessings that are found in those blessings, when we have, in effect, already received promises of those same blessings predicated upon our understanding of and obedience to the scriptures. This was an enlightening lesson to me. Marilyn in Utah _____________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail. As a stake YW presidency we are taking a scrapbooking activity to each of our units....you can do this inexpensively. We bought big packages of multi-colored cardstock for the background paper (about 5 cents a sheet) = you can also buy cardstock at your local copy stores for only about 10 cents = a sheet. BTW, I've learned that most paper IS acid free (except the really cheap newsprint type) so most paper companies don't advertise that on the= ir paper because in the industry it is a given....so, you don't have to go looking for acid free paper unless you just want to spend more money on i= t =DC (lignen free is another matter) Anyway, I can get the plastic sheet protectors for about 7 cents a sheet, so if the YW use a couple sheets of cardstock to make a page, plus one sheet protector it's going to cost les= s than 30 cents per girl. Everyone was given a Fuzzy ball (a pompom made of yarn) on a piece as a necklace. Everyone got a different color(of course some people has the same color.) The idea is to say something nice to them about them then give this person one of the pieces of yarn off of your pompom and tie it onto their string necklace. By the end of the retreat we would have a necklace of pieces of yarn and the pompoms were gone. This activity worked out well. Some years we had problems with it becoming a compatition as to who could get the most strings and their pompoms gone. We just had to stress this is an activity to let everyone know that they are loved. And to keep it real. Another thing we did was put paper bags in the main lodge and everyone had one. When someone did something nice for someone else they were to let them know that they appreciated it. Also just to let people know you loved them and care. This was done by little notes, warm fuzzies. You couldn't read them or go through the bags durring the retreat. They were for you to take home and read when you needed them and could use some extra love and attention. Everyone got a copy of the warm fuzzie story too! However as a group, you can work on more than two experiences that are in the book. This is difficult for the entire YW group to do, but some of the experiences are similar. It's probably best to break into groups by year (Beehive 1, Beehive 2, MM1, MM2) to work on experiences together. I agree that the experiences should on the most part be done on a personal level. In the back of the PP book it does state that the activities can be done on an individual basis, in a class activity, or with a small group of girls. I like the suggestion that they could SHARE what they have done with one another for an activity. You have to realize I live in Wyoming where we usually have to go to SLC for our stuff. There is a little LDS bookstore in Green River and she will usually order things for me. Can you give me any information on who produces it and maybe a stock #? Thanks! Tracks their camp attendence and Seminary attendence. We just started it for all the beehives. It gets passed along as they move up. Hopefully all the leaders will keep it up. It stays in their folder so the Bishop or any leader can look and see how they are progressing. It helps so if they say they forgot their book you can look it up and say " well last time we checked it showed you still needed to do 2 Integrity and 1 Faith. Do you think you've done any of them?" We got them at the Beehive Bookstore. The girls like it and it helps us plan personal progress activities knowing that most of the girls still need a faith or a choice and accountability(whatever). It has seemed to help us keep track and helps us see when a girl starts to slip off. - - To unsubscribe to lds-yw, send an email to "majordomo@xmission.com" with "unsubscribe lds-yw" in the body of the message. Sue in OR >> I think that progress goals should be personal.... however, an activity can be done by a class & it is up to the young woman if she wants to count that or not. Some do & some don't. It's their "personal" decision! For those girls who would otherwise never do any of the personal progress goals, I thnk it is a wonderful way to get them going.... if some are accomplished in a group then that might be added incentive to do others on their own. I think them doing it (partly together) is more important than them NOT doing it at all. They are all growing and learning as they do it... & they are each "personally" growing. That is what it is all about! Ü BTW, I think that it says the Laurels should just do one of their projects together if they choose to, not both, but I don't ever remember reading that the other girls CAN'T do this. In the handbooks where it talks about planning activities I believe it mentions personal progress activities, doesn't it? As we were having a class planning meeting I thought I would share a few summer activities we are planning! Plus a few others! Last night we had the best activity!!!! We bought disposable cameras divided into groups and had a list of places to go and take group photos! The girls were SO creative! Some of their ideas.. I was laughing SO hard! Tears streaming down my face! What do you do with a bunch of such wonderfully funny girls!!!!! Isn't this just the best calling! We are planning on playing water kickball. With the boys. The bases are baby pools and home base. You slip and slide into! Lots of fun! A ward tradition! The girls prefer kickball over softball. We are also going ice-blocking. Same place we went sledding a few short months ago! We have an annual water-skiing trip. Also a ward tradition! Colorado is full of great lakes! Although we need to teach a certain priest how to swim... He almost drowned a couple weeks ago at our swim party. There is a rec center here with water slide, rope swing, rock wall, weight room, basketball courts, Ping-Pong ect ... all for 3 dollars! He is new and was pushed in! We had to rescue him. Was kind of scary as a leader. Hide and scare (keep points 0 no reaction, 10 flinch, 20 Gasp, 30 Jump, 40 Scream) I hope everyone is having a grand day! Oh, I am so excited, one of my non members wants to be baptized! She is just the cutest! Just a quick question, this will be our 3rd youth baptism in 8 months ... all joining w/o family. Is this happening else where? A surge of youth converts ... coming in w/o family? That's how I came in. ... oh so many years ago! Today! I am a photo buff. I take a lot of photos of the girls and have an album of the girls through out this past year. I brought it to our activity last week, the girls loved it. They enjoyed seeing the changes in themselves and remembering different activities and the girls that have passed through our program. I always print copies... Some I hang on the bulletin board. Give the girls the extra sets ... they have a nice collection of their own! Just a thought... so when we are old and having a bad day and need a laugh.. We can pull out the photos and it will trigger some of the best memories! She ALWAYS has a camera. The girls just laugh and know that whenever there is an activity, Sister Taylor will be there snapping pictures. She is busily compiling a big scrapbook of pictures from all the events, complete with letters from the girls, for the YW president. The presidency will be released this Sunday or next and this book will no doubt be a treasured possession! It is a darling book. She's mounted all the pictures on cardstock or pattern paper and used all the fun scrapbooking techniques. Anyway, it is a great idea! It would be fun for each class to make their own book together....
