The girls are excited about this format. I'll post the results after our first meeting in July. _____________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail. Your ideas and information has really help me as a newly called 1st consuelor in YW. I am begining to build my files now and am interested in finding for ideas for YW in Excellence. If any of you have anything to share I would really appreciate the help. I have a great story on Patriotisum (SP?). I read this story in the Maui News. I will send it in two parts its kind of long. I personally think its very awesome. To give you some back ground information. I live on one of the smaller island in Hawaii called Molokai. Very recently, the "Mighty MO" ( USS Missouri) has made its way to be now stationed in Hawaii to be refurbished as a Museum. This story is about the Mighty Mo and Bro. J. Dutton. Located here on our island penisula is the Leporsy Settlement at Kalaupapa, where the famous Catholic priest Father Daimen served the people along with Bro. Joseph Dutton.( also Catholic) This story is about Bro. Joseph Dutton a catholic bretheren. - - To unsubscribe to lds-yw, send an email to "majordomo@xmission.com" with "unsubscribe lds-yw" in the body of the message. An re-creation of the sence that day was written as " Surrounded by his boys, he (Bro. Dutton) was ready waiting when the first dim shadows rose above the horizon: and he stayed until the long gray column had passed out of sight again". "It is not hard for us to picture that erect old figure in its humble suit of denim, white hair and beard bright in the sunshine, tears in his eyes as he stood at salute, his heart touched to pride and joy." So moved by all the fanfare, Dutton felt inadequate at expressing his gratitude. "I need a new dictionary to find words (in which) to give thanks." he said. Thus began the friendship between the US Navy and Kalaupapa. Not long after, in 1925, 10 battleship cruisers passed the settlement nearly two weeks ahead of schedule and offered an unexpected 21-gun salute. According to a neewspaper account, the residents were so excited that they responed not only with cheering voices, but by sounding the whistle at the poi factory over and over again until they ran out of steam. On the Missouri, the tritribute began with Vice Admiral D.E. Hernandez reading aloud Teddy Roosevelt's 1908 telegram that commanded his fleet to divert its course and dip its colors for Dutton. On Saturday, June 20, 1998 Across from the great lighthouse where the residents lined the rocky shore, the tug "Sea Victory" blew its whistle and lowered the colors of the Missouri for a full mintue to once again honor the memory of a simple man who humbled an entire armada. Hope you enjoyed this story as much as I have... I love my country.. Happy 4th of July. Joseph Dutton would out rank even Gen Douglas MacArthur. Dutton's friend ssaid of him " I believe that 1908 visit was a great honor for Dutton. Here is a man of simply terms, a man who wanted only the simply things out of life, not wanting fame or glory. He gave up his life to work beside Father Diamen." Dutton was seeking atonement for what he felt was a shameful period of his life that included a failed marriage and a bout with liquor following a proud stint in the Civial War. Wanting to repent, he joined the Catholic church at age 40 and changed his name from Ira B. Dutton to Bro. Joseph Dutton. When he heard of Father Daimen de Veuster was creating new hope among the exiled leprosy patients on Molokai, Bro. Dutton had found his mission. He brought with him a good-natured personatlity that never seemed to ruffle, a steadfast love for his country and a sense of strict morals. When he finally died at the age of 87 in 1931, Bro. Dutton, the man of simple means, had more than 4,00 names in his address book. But there was probably no greater day in his life than when the Great Fleet came calling. Dutton's patriotism was unmatched. Besides his daily formalities of rasing and lowering the American flag at the Baldwin Home, he would later organize a drive at the settlement to raise money for the Red Cross during World War I ( The paients raised an amazing $6,00.00). Heeven tried to organize atroop of old veteran to go fight again. When he was turned down, he sent a pair of binoculars to be used in battle, instead. Franklin D. Roosevelt, then assistant secretary to the Navy, wrote Dutton that the glasses were, indeed, seeing action. - - To unsubscribe to lds-yw, send an email to "majordomo@xmission.com" with "unsubscribe lds-yw" in the body of the message.
