Part I (June p7) "The promised blessings that come from being married in the temple benefit us in both time and eternity". Part II (July p15) "Responses to commonly asked questions about preparing for a temple sealing". It is kind of a "discussion" between the author and an engaged couple. Wonderful things are covered...why marry in the temple, how to prepare, special things to do on the day you go to the temple, questions about non-member relatives....it's an awesome article. I am hoping to talk my husband (1st counselor bishopric) into urging the bishop to have a byd with these two ensigns, or maybe a combined ym/yw activity. Even if you choose not to share this with your yw right now, it is a terrific article to read. It may help you answer questions that your yw may have in the future, maybe even now. I just wanted to let those of you who are around a Deseret Industries of a great activity we did last week. I wasn't aware of this progam, (but then again I've been living in Florida for the past 10 years!) Anyway, you can get quilt kits from them that have the material, batting and yarn. You just tie them, and finish them off. Then return them to DI and they will be given to those who need them, or sold. Either way your service helps someone. We did it as a Mother-Daughter service project and did 6 baby quilts and 2 twin sized ones. It only took about 1 1/2 hours (of course we already had them on frames when they came) and then some of them took them home to finish them off. One of the girls took several and will count it as a Laurel project. The best thing about it was that it was free! Never heard of such a thing. We involve our youth for the planning of all such large stake activities - youth conferences. We feel as stake leaders we are there to GUIDE them, to change their direction if necessary, to make sure things are appropriate, etc. (In other words, to train them to be future leaders!) What about the use of ad hoc committees as explained in handbooks? Why else would we have them? Our youth attendance at such activities has been greatly boosted since the youth take such a huge part in the planning/advertising/carrying out of activities. Pardon my rudeness, but I feel (MY OPINION) that sometimes leaders get caught up in the fact that they have the opportunity to get some attention, and utilize it. I have participated in the Pursuit of Excellence Programme in RS and know how good it feels to accomplish it, and want my YW to also feel this accomplishment. Any hints and help would be very gratefully received. Mimi ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Your Bishop has to fill out a commodities order requesting how many kits you want, and what sizes, then a counselor in the RS Stake Presidency takes the form into D. I. and picks up what you need. We went through the Ogden D. I. but I would assume that they are not the only ones that did this. If you call your closest store and tell them what you want, they'll direct you to the right department. I can't remember the name of it - sorry (it's home something). In Ogden that department is only open on Tues. and Thurs. so if you don't get through the first time, try again. They also have receiving blankets to be crocheted around, and dish towels - but you have to finish them off first. I'd say the quilting went quickest. Hope this answers your questions. I'm brand new to all of this and would really like some opinions on the topic of dress standards for Stake dances. We recently became a new Stake. They pulled 3 wards from a Stake and then 4 wards from a neighboring Stake to create us. The dilemma is the 3 wards from one stake's dance card allowed I/2 of all stake dances to be casual dress and the rest Sunday dress. The other 4 wards are under a Sunday dress only routine. We are a brand new Stake YW Presidency. There are good arguments for both sides. We as a Presidency feel strongly that it should be l/2 dress and l/2 casual but have been asked by the Stake President to write up our proposal. Any advice? Thanks for sharing! Meaning, jeans (without holes) and shirts with collars are fine. Attendance goes up considerably when these standards are enforced. When it's church dress, many youth don't feel like getting dressed up and don't come. I really see nothing wrong with the youth wearing nice casual clothes, as long as they know that shorts and t-shirts are not allowed. I believe the Sacramento store is the only one that use's this title. The other is the Home and craft section. All of the stores have mending kits and kits for the quilts. In Sacramento they also have plans for all kinds of wood projects. DI will even give you $100 to buy the wood. They have ideas for baskets full of different items. They have the wards fill baskets with items say for a teenage girl others for a teenage boy. It is a great program. Most of us have no idea what DI has done for the people of the church. All we know of DI is we give them our worn out junk. If you want to have fun go volunteer to work at DI. Or get to know the people there. It is truly the gospel in action. I have visited the Sacramento store many times. The employees there are the greatest. Whatever I asked for they were more than willing to let me have. As a Bishop I can fill out a Bishop's order for a family, just like the Bishop's storehouse for food. DI has Brand new: Beds, Kitchen tables, dressers, stools mattresses, chairs. What the Sacramento store does is take the best and keep for the Bishops, especially at Christmas. They also have a back to school night and the Bishop can take any family to DI and get what they need for school. Last year they had brand new tennis shoes, Coats, and for the girls brand new clothes from Maces. The clothes from Maceys were $200 to $500 suits for women. Needless to say we had fun. Again most Bishop's and Stake Presidents have no idea of the value of the DI store. I need to tell you a story. Four years ago I found out about DI. I drove to Sacramento and picked up a trailer load of items. I knew what the families needed in our ward, so I went and got it. We stopped at a Sisters home and delivered: a washer machine, dryer, vacuum, two sets of bunk beds, complete with mattress's, and a few other items. This was just a few days before Christmas and this sister had nothing. A single sister struggling to help her family, She had 3 boys and a girl. Also she was a new member of the church( maybe 2 yrs) and was only coming to church every now and then. We also dropped off toys for the kids. I will never forget it, as we drove away she was standing on the sidewalk crying. She told me later, no one had ever given her anything. We have worked with this sister and I am happy to report last year she went through the Temple for her own endowments. She is active and serving in the RS as the Homemaking Leader. She is also in charge of the BSAP, and she works constantly to help others. Just a couple of months ago her brother died. All of her family came from different parts of the country. I was at her home visiting with her and her family. As I looked around her apartment, I saw a number of items she had received from DI. Kitchen table and other things, they were of good quality and her apartment looked real good. She had no reason to be ashamed of anything. Then I thought, what would it look like if we did not have DI. I was grateful that we could be of service to this sister. Hope I haven't rambled on too much.
