At the beginning, play a brief "Sister *your name* says" (just like Simon says). Have them stand up, bend down, remove one shoe. Than have them pass the shoe to the right, to the right again, to the right again, whatever works for your group. After a few passes, have them put on the shoe they end up with. Than have them sit down and go on with talk. Ours was about being friends, empathinzing with the situation of others. At the end, the girls had to one by one return the shoe they had to its rightful owner and say something they admired about that person while they did it. Our speaker was wonderful, had brought the right spirit, and this was the perfect ending. We also got t-shirts with hearts on them. We had planned to make pajama bottoms on the order of Joe Boxers which would be easy but we've just run out of time. We did paint little wooden heart boxes for each of our YW, and we are giving them little porcelain hearts at the end of the week. We have lots more stuff, but these are the ones I was in charge of. It does make it easier to have a small number of YW. We have 7 going with us, plus 2 leaders and TA-DA, three priesthood brethren. We're excited to go. I was very apprehensive - sending my developmentally delayed daughter out to her 1st Girls Camp trip, 4 years ago. [We were new converts - just baptised the month before]. Amber is a special Young Woman we adopted at the age of 9. She has a learning disability, add/hd, and a family history that would curl your hair. She returned from her first camp experience - still horrified by the snipe hunting experience. No one ever told her it was a joke. She still thought they were real - and that there were girls who had actually been attacked by them. She was both releived and angry when she fianlly learned it was a prank. Now as a 4 Year Girl = she was able to take some of the 1st year girls under her wing, pre-snipe hunt, and tell them what was going to happen. She felt really good about herself, and I was pleased. Another 'harmless' prank - The Strange Man Stalking the Camp Rumor... This one happened on her 2nd & 3rd year. She came home completely terrified - and absolutely certain she had been in terrible danger. Please - try to keep in mind that we have all different levels of maturity & experiences. The WORST thing we ever served were gummy bears (argh! We were hand scrubbing the cultural hall floor, each with knife in hand to SCRAPE the gummy bears off the floor!) We'll never do that again! We definitely only serve water to drink, everything else seemed to be found all over the stake center (i.e. red punch). The kids get hungry and hot. Eating is as important as the dancing. We always have refreshment they range from nachos, to breads, cookies, veggies and dip. We don't always have water and really haven't had any problem with other drinks although we never have anything red. - - To unsubscribe to lds-yw, send an email to "majordomo@xmission.com" with "unsubscribe lds-yw" in the body of the message. The pamphlet was sort of vauge in the area of MONEY, however. Could you tell us how much it cost your group and approximately how many went? That info is pretty important to finding out if it's feasible and how much fund raising would have to take place! Thanks again - Ga in Idaho >> Sorry... guess I told that directly to those who emailed me privately about it. This groups normal fees are $20. per person... but with larger groups they are willing to work on a "sliding scale". For 30 people they charged us $16. per person... so $500. total (which was a reduced fee of $100.) If we had had any more that 30... they would have needed to bring in a third facilitator and that would have cost more, so then we would have been back up to the $20. per head price. It is not cheap... but normally we go away & pay for food & lodging... and so this year we stayed home & just went for the day & brought our own lunches... so in other words... the money all went to just the ropes course. The other ropes courses around here are in the $8-10. range. We went with the one we did for several reasons. I don't know what the other courses would charge for larger group rates... less even??? Also, I don't know what the costs are for their "portable programs" that they bring to YOU. So, bottom line is it really depends on the individual course & what options they have... 1/2 day, full day, two days, etc. Hope that helps. After doing it, we all thought it was worth it & the kids & adults alike felt like it didn't compare to our past youth conferences... this was the best in terms of what they got out of it. I have a unique situation in that we have 4 Beehives, all just barely 12. I'm wondering how they'd fare out. >> We took the Beehives & Deacons. Three Beehives had JUST turned 12. They all did fine & as it turned out, one of the new Beehives has been doing the ropes courses for YEARS in Idaho where she visits relatives. The other two new Beehives had also done it before at there school's 6th grade camps. THEY didn't have a problem... us adults were the scaredy cats! The brochure said age 7 to 70. The younger kids LOVED it & thrived there. Stacey - - To unsubscribe to lds-yw, send an email to "majordomo@xmission.com" with "unsubscribe lds-yw" in the body of the message. They are frozen sticks of different flavored drink... just like a popsicle. They are cheap at Costco & the kids love them when they are hot & thirsty. We stay away from cake with icing that gets smashed in the floor/carpet & usually have ice water & another drink... like powdered drink mixes... lemonade, etc. The refreshments stay in the one room & are not allowed to wander through the building. Otherwise, pretzels, chips & salsa, cookies, vegie platter, fish crackers are normal fare... all things that can be vacuumed up. What about something like root beer floats? Our last one that we hosted was a fiasco, the people responsible for getting the dj fell through, and they brought a cd player to play music. It was a mess, anyway, to the point. 2 brothers in our ward have a lot of the equipment, but they wanted to do refreshments too.
