It is a one week program much like Especially for Youth, but it is for girls only, 12-14 years. AFG focuses on YW values, service, etc. My daughter went last year and loved it. She is going again. The program is offered throughout the summer months at BYU and at various other locations in US and Canada. You could maybe call their number at 801 378-3817. My daughter got pregnant after she got engaged (somehow they thought it was ok to have sex if you were engaged). Anyway, the day before the wedding (due to nerves and hormones) she decided she didn't want to get married. The bishop was brought in to help negotiate and he asked her what she would do with the baby. She said she would give it up for adoption. He counseled her that it wasn't as simple as that. The bishop told her to think and pray about it and he would be back in a couple of hours to talk to her. The bishop came back and gave her a blessing and to make a long story short.....they decided to get married and work through whatever they thought the problem was. A year later they were married in the temple and had the baby sealed to them. I'm here to tell you that that baby is the joy of our lives. Everytime I think about what would have happened if she had given her up for adoption, it brings me to tears. I don't know if that has any relevance to the subject, but I just felt the need to share my feelings and the wisdom of a bishop who knew how to counsel in times of stress. This year I attended a youth conference in my old stake, where the theme was "Army of Helaman." When we first arrived, we went through the back door where there were people dressed as warriors and even a real horse was there. We signed in on the "Golden Plates" and were given army of Helaman name tags on silver chains that were color coated. Then, the cultural hall was covered of pictures of Helaman and sets of 2 stripling warriors. Kevin Fronk, the guy who basically "did" the youth conference and the talking stuff, did an AWESOME job. For our service project, we went to a near by state park that is some what new. I think it's like 3 years old. We cleared trails, made boardwalks, and other jobs to help out. We were split into our color groups where we were told where to go. Half of the youth stayed behind and attended classes taught by "mothers of the stripling warriors" and then participated in rope games and an obstical course. The other half were split into groups to perform their service part of the activity for about 2-3 hours. Then, we met for lunch at the main area and then switch positions. It was A TON of fun. Saturday morning we met in the cultural hall before our testimony meeting. Brother Fronk talked to us a little bit more about the stripling warriors. On Friday night, as we all left to go home, we were given a piece of rope and told to bring it back the next day. On Saturday morning, we all gathered around the cultural hall, and tied the ropes together and united in unity. It was cool. Then, they opened the curtains and there was an 11 year old boy sitting on the stage playing "The Army of Helaman" the primary song on his harp. It was really cool. Then, we walked into the cultural hall and began our testimony meeting. It was a great youth conference and a great theme. Good luck!!! I know you spent a lot of time trying to send it via this list, but unfortunately, I did not recieve all of it. Could I possibly send you a S.A.S.E. and have you mail me a copy? I would really like to use this activity for camp the first week of August. Please e-mail me seperately and let me know. Thank you!
