It used a large spool (wooden from the craft store) for the body, a round wooden ball for the head, two mini spools for the arms with a small ball on the end for the hands, 3 spools for legs with a small wooden heart on the end for the feet. The legs were wired together by wrapping a match stick 2 or 3 times with one end of the wire (pull out the match stick) and then feeding the straight end through the feet/hands and mini spools. When the two arms are made and the two legs are made, the four wires are fed through the hole in the body spool from bottom to top. I actually drilled a hole in the sides of the spools for the arms. The wires were pretty long and also fed up through the round head to the top where they were twisted and flattened down. Then hair was glued over them. Each of the spools had a value color (embroidery thread) wrapped around it. They were supposed to put their favorite value color close to the heart and then work out. Then a little piece of lace was gathered around the neck into a little dress, so the value colors showed through, and put around the doll with two dots for eyes. They were cute, made up fast and were small (only about 4" tall), could bend and sit. I put them in kits in sandwich bags including the cut wire (4 pieces). The girls seemed to really like them. They were a great activity to do on a rainy day in the tents. Hope I explained them so you could understand. I could fax you a diagram if not. Like starting with a vase full of flowers and passing them out; instead of one large focus of beauty you have many small points of beauty... like each of our girls. Maybe after everyone who wanted to shares thier testimony, the leaders could give a flower to those who did not share there testimony out loud but bore it in their hearts. That way no one is made uncomfortable by being forced to stand if the are not ready but every one gets a flower, just like everyone hopefully feels the spirit. >Why not start with the vase of flowers and let each girl take one for >her self as she goes up to share her testimony. I hope you will come and visit the site and send in your successful activities and ideas to be added. I would like to list additional YW links as well, so if you know of any, please feel free to contact me and share them so I can make a better resource for YW and their leaders. I welcome ideas and can include photos or graphics if you have any. Also, is their a website for this list, an archive or anything? Thanks! I asked the girls to bare their testimonies in a book of mormon so that we could give them to the missionaries! I thought this was a safe forum for them to share their feelings without being tooo intimidated!!=20 Well it turns out that one of the girls said in a very large voice I don't believe any of this and I'm not doing it. Well being the new YW's leader never having delt with these darlings much, I roled my eyes!!!=20 Well I was yelled at for an hr. by her mother ect...which I should have been! I should not have rolled my eyes I should have taken her out of the room and given her a chance to express herself privatly! The gist of the story is, we can NEVER ASSUME that these YW and YM have a testimony to share!! As I spoke to my Wise and wonderful older Sis. about this she gave the advise like, A Testimony is a sweet and private thing to be shared when it is developed to the point that you are confident of it and yourself!!! You can never take a testimony for granted, it is at times as fragile as china, and strong as steal, but others don't know at what point someone else is at!! We want to do an activity with another ward.. Only problem is they have LOTS of girls. Question is anyone have a good activity for about 50 -60 girls? I would like to invite the other ward and have a plan in place.. But working with smaller numbers on a regular basis leaves me pretty clueless as to what works with large groups! In out stake we have two huge youth groups so if this works out we'd like to invite the other ward over once too! Please oh Please help! This would fit in perfect with what I'm doing for our Young Womanhood Recognition, but I deleted after I gave the print command and somehow it never printed. Could someone please post it again -- but soon I need it tomorrow. Thanks, Ilene _________________________________________________________ DO YOU YAHOO!? I thought I would share with you an example of strength among our youth today... We have a fine young man in our ward ... 15, a VERY talented baseball player ... baseball is his life! He tried out and made the division league! A VERY big deal. He was so very excited as were we for him. Then he found out, they played their games on Sundays ... he resigned his position.... His mother yelled at him to the point of bringing him to tears ... telling him of this great opportunity he was giving up, how disappointed she was, how he was throwing away his talent, among other things. This young man, this very fine young man ... in spite of what his mother and everyone else said, ( coach, friends, ect). Choose to do the right.... He stood firm, saying he knew what the right choice was, he knew what was important, knew what his Father in Heaven would have him do. The story is not over here .... This young man made a bigger impression on what it means to honor and keep the Sabbath day ... to the youth in our ward, then any lesson we could have ever given. I know how much our young women respect him..... And I am grateful that my sons have such an example of strength in our ward. It involves 50+ girls from three wards. We will play a "mixer" game in the cultural hall, then split the girls by class-beehives, mia maids and laurels and they will spend 1/2 hour in three classes/workshops/craft area. Each ward is responsible for putting on the 1/2 hour class relating to the values. The goal for these classes was to do a craft and also try to pass off a personal progress goal. For example, my ward has individual worth. We are going to make a simple card and then the girls are going to write in them. This passes off: Beehive 1, Goal #8, Beehive 2, Goal #3, Mia Maid 1, Goal #4, Mia Maid 2, Goal #3. We are really trying to do this as in-expensively as possible. Then after the workshops, the girls will go back into the cultural hall and each ward is responsible for a group game. Then we will serve hot fudge sundaes. Should be fun and hopefully we will get to know some of the other members in other wards. PS: to pull this off, all three ward YW pres. met to hammer out the details. Also one ward did an invitation to each girl. - -----Original Message----- From: LDMcEwen@aol.com To: lds-yw@lists.xmission.com Date: Tuesday, July 28, 1998 8:28 PM Subject: (lds-yw) A Bigger Activity >Sisters, >After camp the girls in our ward bonded with youth from other wards. I have very much enjoyed the wonderful ideas all of you sisters have added to the list. We have a new yw presidency and none of us were part of the yw program while we were growing up, because we were all converts as adults. I have a question that I hope someone can help me out on. We are a small branch, we have 4 young women, and the last couple of months, the president has decided to combine our activities once a month with the Relief Society homemaking meeting. I miss not being able to attend the homemaking meetings, but I feel that having a joint meeting is not in the best interest of the girls. By the time we have a joint yw-ym meeting once a month, and now a joint yw-rs meeting that only leaves 2 times a month for the girls to get together and work on their personal progress. I feel very strongly that we should not combine with rs on a regular basis, but the yw president feels that this is ok. I would very much appreciate some feed back from some of you sisters on this. I have discussed this with the Branch Presidency at length, and there hasn't been a decision either way. I just think that we should be devoting our time and energy to the girls and their needs, and not our needs. Thanks again to all of you for your wonderful ideas!!!
