I thought that some of you might enjoy reading his words about it. It made enough of an impact on him that he wrote his testimony down and shared it with family members. This is a very special boy. He was born about 5 weeks early and spent many weeks at the University of Utah Medical Center. At one point, the doctors said that he was the sickest baby in the hospital. He recovered and grew up to be a big strong boy. The only lasting effect was that he is severely hearing impaired. Some of the boys in his ward have been teasing him lately. This will explain part of his testimony. The testimony of Benjamin Curtis: This past week I had a life-changing experience. I was on a 50-miler with my scout troop and we were rafting the Salmon River from Challis to Salmon. We were floating down the river and having a good time. We came upon some rapids and they were really wild. Our boat was trying to catch a current to get past a dead tree in the middle of the river. We hit the current, but we weren't paddling hard enough to get past the tree. We ran into the tree and it caused the boat to fold together. I was on the right side of the boat and the tree pushed me off the boat and into the river. As I fell off, my left leg got caught and twisted in the rope that goes around the boat. I was stuck under the boat, which wasn't moving,up against the tree and a rock with my face under the water. I felt like it was my time to go see my Heavenly Father. I couldn't move around to get above the water. My life jacket had gone above my face and it felt like I was breathing under water, but I couldn't move. I prayed that Heavenly Father would help me. A few seconds after I prayed, the rope broke and I was free. I popped up above the water and found that almost everyone else had also flipped out of the boat. My leg was hurting at the time, but I knew I would be okay. One of the leaders helped me up onto the boat. The rope was made of nylon and about 3/4 inch thick. It was not frayed or stripped. It looked like someone had cut it with a pair of scissors, a perfect slice. There was no earthly reason for it to break. I know Heavenly Father cut it to save my life at this time and I'm very thankful for him to save my life. Now I know that I have something important to do with my life and I know that Heavenly Father really does watch over people. I also learned that some of the boys who had been mean to me earlier, did really care for me. Whenever you need help, you only need to pray to Heavenly Father. I've learned that Heavenly Father will always be there for me. I'm not glad that this experienced happened, but it has helped me be a better person. I say these things in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen. Ben's Bishop said that he separately interviewed each person who was thrown from the boat. Each one of them said a similar thing about being able to breathe under the water. His Bishop also said that there was no logical explanation for the way that the rope was broken. Ben's leg is extremely bruised and swollen. The rope burn behind his knee is terrible. - - To unsubscribe to lds-yw, send an email to "majordomo@xmission.com" with "unsubscribe lds-yw" in the body of the message. The Hmong people here are a very loving people to work with. John was the YM president, and I was a counselor in YW. These young people are the best. We also taught seminary together, because of our work schedules, and John worked with the scouts as well. Small branches give you more opportunities to get to know these kids. Our Sundays were very long days, but wonderful. We each took a car, and picked up as many of the kids as we could, (all the rest of the Stake Missionaries in the branch did too) because we had very few active adults at that time. On average we had probably 50 to 60 children, from primary through YW-YM, and if we were lucky, 6 to 10 Hmong adults. Then after our regular Sunday meetings were over, we had Seminary (Stake approved), then all of the high school students would come to our home for lunch, and then spent the rest of the day and often into the night working on whatever they needed help. Sometimes it was just a need for an extra social gathering, and sometimes it was school work. I helped with the English, Science, and Math, crafts, while my husband helped with the History, Seminary and scout projects. Then we would take the kids home, usually after dinner! Often during the week we would get visits either on the way to or from school to help with homework. I miss these wonderful YW-YM!! Please write me at spiffy@frontiernet.net if you have any questions at all. You will love working with the Hmong people they are the best. It's been a few years since I worked with the Beehives, but here's what I remember: There is always a cute theme - one year it was "Angels Among Us"... the invitations had angels ("be an angel and come to the Beehive Conference"), one of the mini-workshops was a craft to make an adorable angel pin (we painted wooden bodies, glued on hair, etc.) There is always a keynote introductory speaker, then 3 mini-workshops that the girls rotate between, then the traditional 15-foot long subway sandwich cut into chunks for all participants (and fruit & chips & drinks) for lunch. The workshops have ranged from spiritual/inspirational to memory-book making to journal-writing classes (lots of hand-outs). One year they had a line-dancing/aerobic class...another year was the angel-making craft. I remember one class called "honor the name that you bear" - adorable cards decorated with teddy bears were handed out, and everyone looked up their names in books that told what different names mean. In that class pictures of several of the recent prophets were displayed, and we had to match names with their pictures. I was embarrassed at how poorly I scored on that one! More recently, I understand that the conference has been set up so that the girls can get a whole bunch of personal progress goals signed off as they participate in the day. MY THREE WHITE DRESSES My mom bought me a white dress, not red or pink or blue. She said it was a special dress, Like very other few. There has been just one before, A dress now put away, That I wore some time ago, Upon my blessing day. As a little baby clothed, In my first white dress My dad held me in his arms, There to name and bless. So pure and clean was I just hen, With time to grow and learn About the Father's plan for me, My glory I must earn. Now I've reached the age to judge, The wrong road from the right, And I am here to be baptized, In this dress of white. So once again I'm free from sin. The path is clear to me. I'll grasp the rod and hold on tight, I vow with certainty. Just as mud would stain my dress, Sin would stain my soul. The key is to repent or bleach, For whiteness is my goal. And if I try my very best, Then richly blessed I'll be, Wearing inside God's holy house, White dress number three. So today I make this pledge: I'll strive to choose the right, Through this sacred baptism ordinance, In my second dress of white. author is not mentioned. Then the young women and their moms talked about their baptisms, not all were spiritual some where funny. Then we had Mom's tell about their sealings and how important that was for them. She concluded her talk on dating and standards and a reminder to set their goals to aspire to; be able to walk through the Temple Doors and be sealed for time and all eternity, to a man who loves them so much, he wanted to take them to the Temple. >MY THREE WHITE DRESSES > >My mom bought me a white dress, not red or pink or blue. >She said it was a special dress, Like very other few. >There has been just one before, A dress now put away, >That I wore some time ago, Upon my blessing day. >As a little baby clothed, In my first white dress >My dad held me in his arms, There to name and bless. > >So pure and clean was I just hen, With time to grow and learn >About the Father's plan for me, My glory I must earn. > >Now I've reached the age to judge, The wrong road from the right, >And I am here to be baptized, In this dress of white. >So once again I'm free from sin. The path is clear to me. >I'll grasp the rod and hold on tight, I vow with certainty. >Just as mud would stain my dress, Sin would stain my soul. >The key is to repent or bleach, For whiteness is my goal. > >And if I try my very best, Then richly blessed I'll be, >Wearing inside God's holy house, White dress number three. >So today I make this pledge: I'll strive to choose the right, >Through this sacred baptism ordinance, In my second dress of white. > >author is not mentioned. > >Dee in Iowa - - To unsubscribe to lds-yw, send an email to "majordomo@xmission.com" with "unsubscribe lds-yw" in the body of the message. We did games, etc. in addition. - -- Remember When? Families brought their photo albums and pictures from the past. We went from table to table enjoying the pictures! We had a wall of pictures of prominent ward members (with older pictures - wedding, etc.) that we had people try to guess who they were! This was a lot of fun. - -- Game night. Everyone brought their favorite games and people went from table to table playing as time allowed. It was nice to see even the primary children and youth playing games with the older ward members. - -- Ward activities with ice breaker ideas - such as finding someone that was born in the same state as you, or who has the same color of eyes, etc. are always fun. - -- Plus the obvious Holiday type themes. I talked to our Stake YW President about this and she said we are not to meet with the YM on Sundays. As it is, we barely have enough sundays to get through all the lessons in the manual. She was concerned that we would be missing some if we met with the YM. One of my laurels just finished this project. She baked the bread for the sacrament every week for six weeks. It was a wonderful project. I had to clear it with my Bishop first, but he thought it was a great idea. No one in the ward knew she was doing it until we presented her medallions to her in Sacrament meeting. Several people came up to me afterward and commented that they had been curious as to why we were using homemade bread. Now that her project is finished, her efforts are sorely missed! Another one I just thought of the other day is a class project. (unless you are very ambitious!) We're going to compile a handout which contains a short profile on every family in our ward. I thought it would be neat to be able to hand this information (with addresses and telephone numbers) to new people who move in, to give them more that just an address and phone list. This would involve contacting every family in the ward. If there are some inactives who didn't want to participate, their names, addresses and phone numbers would be the only information included.
