Don't know about the original post on this one either, but your discussion struck a chord in me because our family is going through this situation. I am YW pres, and my middle son 18yr old, will be married the 27th of this month. His girlfriend is 6 months pregnant. It's been devastating to our family and the choices have been tough. Adoption was NOT an option for this young mom - she wouldn't even consider it. My son wanted marriage and she did too. It has been tough to accomplish as there was resistance from her family, but they will be married this month. They wanted to be together and plan to work toward being sealed. It's going to be very hard for them- they are both young, but I also think it can work if they try hard. I belive Heavenly Father expects us to take responsibility for our actions and that babies are not to be born out of wedlock. Where there are two individuals who want to take responsibility for their situation (even if they are not totally aware of what that entails) they should be given that chance. It's tough and will be a long haul, but if they are doing what's right, they will have all the help they need. Of course, I wish this situation hadn't come up. My oldest son served a mission, my second is serving now. I had hoped for this experience for my next son, but his choices limited his options and it's time to "suck it up" as they say. It's never an easy situation, but support from family and friends is essential. I am surprised that they did not give you a topic to teach on because of the structured lessons in RS and Priesthood new this year. We were asked to coordinate RS lessons with the Priesthood, to give same lessons on same Sundays. You might ask one of the Priesthood leaders what lesson they plan to give. Or if you still get to choose, "Joy in the Journey" could be a fun topic and applicable to all ages. We used it one year for a Pursuit of Excellence program in RS and then it was this year's EFY theme (at least it was for my daughter who went to a week at BYU). The book given to them had great talks in it; ( I stole a peek) examples; Act 1: The Premortal Life, Act ll: Mortality, Act lll Life after Death, "The Best Three Hours of the Week", "Learning to Recognize the Spirit", "All these things Shall Give thee Experience", I could go on ... 200 pages of great youth and adult talks/topics. When I was RS pres. last year, with Bishop's permission, we had the Laurel class attend RS once/quarter. The YW pres and I would decide which Sunday based on the lessons that were scheduled. There was positive feedback and I think it helped the girls see a "bigger picture" of sisterhood. Anyway, hope this helps. Sister Ferguson, I would just like you to know that all of our prayers are with you at this time. On e of my roommates just went through this rough ordeal. She chose to give her child up to lds social services, which indeed was one of the hardest things for her to do. What helped her get through most of it was the support of our university ward and the song "From God's arms to my arms to yours" by Michael Mclean. But she truly has been blessed by our Heavenly Father. I know that the decision to keep a child or give it up is hard. As I have only been a member for 1 year yesterday, I have seen the changes in yw who keep their child. Whereas I have failed to notice them before. All I can say is that whatever this yw decides, support her and show her more love. I have numerous young adult friends who have read this article and we all agree that if the decision is made prayerfully then this couple will be blessed. As for your son, he may have the opportunity to go on a mission when he is older ( Married couple mission) I know that missions are a big part of our church to soar for souls, but I also know that your son will have the opportunity to serve our Heavenly Father whether it is him going on a mission or rendering service as a member of the church!
