She was insistant we enforce this tho no end, but I too feel very strongly about teaching; then letting them, with parental encouragement, make their own decisions. I personally would rather have them at activities with the short shorts, than out on the street with them...until we have taught and taught and taught them and they have made the choice to do what the prophet has asked us to do. I pray for the girls, and encourage them to make the correct choice, but love them and accept them when they make other choices. This is what Jesus taught us to do! I can't remember exactly why but that is what we've been told. Since this is what they have told us is "church" dress, we have incorporated it into the dance standards. I doubt that boys are turned away if they wear a colored dress shirt with a tie to the dance, but the white shirt is what they are told in the dance card interview. I thought some of you would like this. Inside Look at You're Gonna Make It by John Bytheway Next week, in my district anyway, they're finally singing those three little words every parent longs to hear: "Back to school." In my family's case, it's "back to schools," because we're sending one off to college, leaving one in high school, one in junior high, and two in elementary school. To be frank, it's the middle one I worry about the most. I have such gruesome memories from junior high that I can hardly bear to send a child of mine there - and I'm afraid it's only gotten worse since my day. So before I send him into the hurricane, I'm going to have him read "You're Gonna Make It," John Bytheway's year-by-year account of the lessons he learned in grades seven through twelve and the role the gospel can play in helping a kid through it all. The thing about John is, he can say the same things I've been saying as a mom for years, but when HE says them, they seem to magically take on the weight of authenticity. My children hear and believe. Meanwhile, I've gotten smart enough to smile and nod instead of sputtering, "But . . . but . . . I'VE been trying to tell you that all along . . ." This is probably John's most autobiographical book, and it offers a solid dose of what he calls "same-boat therapy." For example, the first chapter, "Seventh Grade: Gee - What a Joy," tells how his family moved just before he started into junior high. He felt lost and lonely, lacking the social skills and the wardrobe to make it. Sound familiar? Like maybe the feelings of every seventh grader in the country? "What do you do when you're lost?" John asks. The answer: you find a map, and "The map tells you exactly where you are and will help you figure out how to get where you want to go." This opens the door for a wonderful gospel discussion of why we are where we are, leading to the powerful conclusion: "Heavenly Father knew exactly where I was. And he knows where you are too." Wouldn't that be a comforting thing for a seventh-grader to know? John goes on through the years, sharing the agonies common to most adolescents as well as the triumphs that kids experience in this intense period of "becoming." He's hilariously honest about some pretty tough moments, but the underlying message is one of strength and power built on gospel principles. John shows young people (and their parents) that the way to be happy at any age is to find out who you are and who Heavenly Father is and how the two of you can work together to make the most of your life. "You're Gonna Make It" won this year's IBBY award from the Independent LDS Bookseller's Association in the "Best Youth Title" category, meaning it was the youth title that the booksellers "most enjoyed selling and found ourselves consistently recommending to our customers during the past year." That's a fairly powerful recommendation, but I didn't need that award to tell me this was the book I could give to my son and say, "Read this, honey, it'll help you feel better." I can tell him he's going to make it, but now, thanks to John Bytheway, he might actually believe it.
