Saw the Pet Shop Boys at the Birmingham UK NEC last night. Great stupid opera type show, with wigs, five backing vocalists, a fat percussionist and even the obligatory hidden techno boffin on keyboards. Great set, but ruined by : 1. NEC's terrible all seated policy that meant it had NO atmosphere. So British and repressed. 2. PSB's dreadful sequencing ie. getting a great classic and surrounding it by loads of mid-paced undanceble tosh in a sterile arena. IE. fast/slow/fast/slow.. just kills the atmosphere. For Your Own Good was a dreadful opener, as they played the entire song behind a screen with video projections on it. In an all-seated arena, you just can't tell when the shows starts - there's no excitement. No matter how good the song is (and FYOG is awesome on record). The remix of West End Girls (sounds like the Sasha mix to the untrained ear) was excellent though. Ruined some songs by the same treatment - especially when they remixed Being Boring with some stuttering 'contemporary' rhythm behind it. Completely ruined the song. Discoteca was weak as hell as well. The drums sounded wiped out of the mix... it was a shadow of its former self. This show really was a wasted opportunity - if the PSB's go out next time they ought to go and do a full blown club all-standing tour and play a set of their hi-NRG club classics that would be euphoric and not theatric. As of my vote, Play has gotten 9 votes... This can not stand. Nevermind the fact that Moby isn't nominated for artist of the century (guess he just doesn't compare to the Go-Go's) or doesn't have a song of the century (but at least REM's "Loosing my religion" is winning).. I went to 4 PSB shows in the U.S. - Las Vegas, L.A., Orange County, and San Diego. Each was spectacular and powerful. The San Diego show was by far the BEST show I have ever seen live (tho Moby's L.A. show for Play is a close second). First of all, Sylvia is a very polished and professional singer. She and the guys (who, by the way, were the actual album vocalists) did a fantastic job of supporting Niel. The music performance was great - the usual PSB stuff with added flair and new mixes (didn't you notice?) that were more than danceable and which were both entertaining and infusable. The atmosphere was charged with the highest energy... For Your Own Good was the best opener they could have chosen. It was new, high tech, and suspense building. Being Boring was spectacular, as were their other newly remixed pieces. Discoteca was a new take on the old beat - - softer but just as eloquent. This is looking to be a great tour. They've sold out dates all over the world! Quite a step up for their last tour, when they did well in certain places but lost money in other places. This is a great step into the millenium for the Pet Shop Boys. If you want club, go see Ben Watt dj. Pet Shop Boys are still the innovative duo they've always been. And that's that. I noticed, and by and large the new touches were excellent, but I found the new rhythms on Discoteca and Being Boring just didn't work. It also came with a vinyl with 3 remixs of "Bodyrock": Olav Basoski's Da Hot Funk Da Freak Funk Remix B & H Bodyrob Mix Dani König Remix I think Moby is so talented, I've looked through all my CD's to see if I had any previous songs of his, but I only found Go (Woodtick Mix) on a techo CD called Technohedz and my brother tells me there's a song on the Spawn soundtrack with the Butthole Surfers and Moby but I haven't heard that. I want to get his previous CD's, any recommendations on which is the best? "everything..." is the best example of his work. it takes a grain of salt to listen to "animal rights" because it's not really in the vein of any other album he's done, it's more of a punk rock album in that sense. greetings, - -alex _________________________________________________________ "We don't make mistakes.
