First off, regarding Napster I NEVER use it for artists I collect, which are many. Moby, Prince, Faithless, Rollo, Pet Shop Boys, etc. I purchase EVERY release they put out. I support talent. I use Napster for the following reasons. To get remixes I can't track down (often on promos or imports), to get that one song from an artist you actually like when you think the rest of the music sucks or rst of the CD sucks, live stuff that normally you would be paying a bootlegger for, unreleased stuff that again you'd be paying a bootlegger to get in most instances AND to sample new artists. As examples in the last year alone. A few months ago I heard Coldplay's "Trouble" on public radio here in Detroit. Couldn't believe how beautiful and sad this song was and instantly went to Napster when I got home to sample their other stuff. Was equally amazed by what I heard, DELETED the mp3's and went out and bought the CD next day. Coldplay is now a band I, like Moby and the others I list above, will purchase anything they release. I think they're brilliant and feel good about spending money as a show of support. Heard a song by Blue States on public radio. Loved it. Went to Napster, checked out a few other tracks, equally liked them, so off to the store I go and now own that CD. I don't believe in using Napster to download entire released CD's, I think thats bullshit. But for one off songs, stuff you can't find in stores, unreleased songs/live concerts and to sample new music it is fantastic. Damn! Well really the only thing that interested me was to see Moby, Eminem, Elton John. DJ Paul they played Natural Blues. You know I think we have gone over this so many times here. It is always interesting to see peoples opinions on this subject. So yesterday while I was scanning napster I ran across an Mp3 of Moby's performance at the Grammies. Now I am really sad I missed seeing it on TV. I am curious to see what happens to Napster now after the ruling against them. I am one of those people who when I hear about a new group or a friend tells me about a group I haven't heard of I go out to Napster and download stuff from that group. If I like what I hear then I go out and buy their CD. If I don't like what I hear I delete the file. I have purchased 50 or 60 CD's from groups I never would have heard of or thought of buying their album if it was not for Napster. For this reason I think Napster is a great tool for artists to use to reach people like me who may never had even thought about buying their album until I heard their stuff from Napster. Also, what makes people think that closing Napster down will keep people from downloading free music? Gnutella and other programs do the same exact thing that Napster does. There is only one major difference though. Gnutella is not owned by anyone. It is just a peer-to-peer file sharing protocol. The RIAA is going to be beating their heads against a wall trying to figure out who to sue when it comes to gnutella. I am not saying that it is right or wrong using Napster or the likes, but I am saying that the technology is out there and no one is going to stop it from happening so they need to work with it instead of fighting it. But, like it or not, >money keeps the music world going.>> The fact that you are saying this infuriates me! you are calling me naive because i as a musician believe that music comes before money?! why would a musician be in the business if it wasn't for the music they create? that just doesn't make sense. sure, money is a large part of the music business- or ANY business for that matter, but if a musician is for real, if they are truly a musician, their music will be higher on their list of priorities than their paycheck. the music business must be by far the best business you could be in, you can do something you really enjoy, share something that you've created- and if you play your cards right, people might put you up on that pedestal, buy your records, and put your poster on their bedroom wall. now if you are trying to tell me that Moby places his paycheck higher than his music, then just say that flat out. money can corrupt a musician and switch around these priorities, but i would like to think, as "naive" as it might sound, that Moby has not yet been corrupted and hopefully will not in the future. i believe he really still is all about his music and the happiness and good vibes that it gives out to the world. *~alexandra*~ _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com - ------------- To unsubscribe from this list, send mail to majordomo@xmission.com with the line "unsubscribe mobility" in the body. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 24 Feb 2001 10:55:46 +1300 From: "Tiffany ."
