(RE: (mobility) VOTE FOR MOBY...) er, we're pretty much mocking the labels and management, not crying "sell out!" at moby. he certainly did sell out, in-and-of the fact that he apparently owns none of his songs, and therefor doesn't seem to get much say in anything dealing with them (which pretty much fucks me over), but whatever, that's not the issue oat hand. the issue at hand is primerally mocking v2 and mct. hope that clears things up a smidgen. :) cheers, -mark On Thu, 8 Nov 2001, Geoffrey Sproule wrote: > Isn't it pathetic... > Once a hidden gem like Moby actually begins to get any sort of > recognition he deserve there is a backlash > > Sold out I hear you cry... He made a decision to become a techno-star when all around him championed anonymity - which wound a lot of people up - and helped him to sell records. So it could be argued that he sold out back then, certainly he went against the code of the underground to become an overground, almost mainstream pop star from the release of 'Go'. However, if the call of 'sell out' is centered around his decision to allow his publishers and record label to rape the catalogue and license tracks to every morally corrupt corporate machine on the planet then the question has to be, how can any one person change their views to those extremes? did moby suffer any kind of culture shock when he shifted from one ideological hemisphere to the other? if moby has ever considered his songs to be his children - as many artists claim - then how can he sit back and watch them being abused? or is he just winding everyone up still? Personally I don't care how many records he sells. As with all artists that I admire, I like it when they become popular - it means that'll be able to record more music and put it out. Some of my favorite artists have disappeared because they never sold enough product to survive. At least Moby will be able to keep putting albums out (which might not have happened if he'd continued to record stuff like 'animal rights' or dance stuff even). Finally... this kind of debate has always been encouraged by moby himself. criticism enables growth in a true artist. And who knows... maybe with his next album he'll turn down all requests for licensing, just to wind the corporate up. What d'ya reckon? Not very likely... I don't see Moby making another hard techno single a la Voodoo Child, and he said so himself that he won't be doing this kind of music in the near future. All Moby's musical talents have merged into one 'style' kind of like on Play where there are the guitars in Bodyrock and Southside and some dance stuff in Machete. But all is mixed now. I don't want to call myself a genre purist, but I think the next Moby album is going to be a lot like Play, no surprises, just those breakbeats with this time perhaps other samples than blues samples... I sure hope I'm wrong though.. My guess is that he'll bring in the real strings, real singers and real band, but it'll still sound like Moby in the mix. My pointy was that maybe he'll reject requests for his new tracks to be used on adverts etc - just to confound everyone who thinks they've got him pegged. Probably not though.
