That being said the ratings are applied by a group of volunteers (how they are picked I don't know). Therefore the ratings are simply a matter of personal opinion. In some respects ratings in the US have become stricter over the years and in some ways they have loosened up. I don't know how the Canadian system works but if it is similar then I would chalk it up as a difference of opinion. bb [ To leave the movies mailing list, send the message "unsubscribe ] [ movies (without the quotes) to majordomo@xmission.com ] ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 11 Aug 1998 08:11:54 -0700 From: Bruce Bridges Subject: RE: [MV] different ratings? -Reply Referring to my previous post concerning our US ratings system I have to say that it does not bother me at all. Before the system was established each local community would review and pass/fail/censor every movie that came through. It wasn't unusual for the local priest to make such decisions. Because of this there were many areas where certain films were not allowed. This system pretty much eliminated that censorship. Ratings don't affect me personally since I have to honor of being old enough to see everything but friends that are parents depend on them to determine if films are appropriate for their children. I think that is the real purpose. The only real censorship that occurs is based on finances since an NC 17 rating can limit which theatres are willing to carry a movie. If a filmmaker is basing his art on how much money he can make off of it then I have to question his integrity as an artist. BTW, the TV rating system is set up so producers rate their own shows and it is a joke in the industry since producers give shows the rating that they think is best for their own purposes. bb [ To leave the movies mailing list, send the message "unsubscribe ] [ movies (without the quotes) to majordomo@xmission.com ] ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 11 Aug 1998 15:34:44 cet From: "greuel" Subject: RE: [MV] different ratings? > Politics are just crazy. Well, a country needs to protect those that need protection (children), so if they think that particular films or scenes can be harmful, they need to make sure that kids are not exposed to them. Obviously the boards differ in their estimation what is and what is not harmful. In the end that is a matter of culture and how highly you value free speech as opposed to the protection of individuals. It's a tricky matter, but the ratings are merely concerned with children and young adults. It gets unpleasant when countries start to decide that even adults are not allowed to see a particular film or scene. thomas - --- http://greuel.notrix.de/ - abomiNation "One must still have chaos in one to give birth to a dancing star" Friedrich Nietzsche [ To leave the movies mailing list, send the message "unsubscribe ] [ movies (without the quotes) to majordomo@xmission.com ] ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 11 Aug 1998 09:25:46 -0700 From: "Romero, Leticia" Subject: RE: [MV] different ratings? It's because > of producers that we were blessed with Fire Down Below and Whit Stillman... Well, in effect the studio is the first to do a rating. They keep an eye so that the films will be rated suitable for the targeted audience. There is no use putting out a children's film when there are such gratuitious scenes in there that children won't be allowed to see it. Example: The original version of Disney's Jungle Book contained a scene, were Mogli is sexually abused by this big monkey King of the Jungle. I won't go into details, but they are discgusting - believe me. Then there is another one were the four Beatles vultures attack Bagira (a reference to Hitchcock's Birds) and tear out one of his eyes. There is more but I can't remember. All these scenes would have lifted the film to an 18-rating. Ok - none of this is true. But it could be. You never know. Producers have to make sure that they can get the targeted audience. I suppose their are no extremely violent scences in the film about the sinking ship - simply because Leo is known to attract a lot of younger female teens. A lot of potential audience would have been excluded from the film if they had kept the scene where Leo seduces the sheep in the cargo. thomas thomas Imagine they were - --- http://greuel.notrix.de/ - abomiNation "One must still have chaos in one to give birth to a dancing star" Friedrich Nietzsche [ To leave the movies mailing list, send the message "unsubscribe ] [ movies (without the quotes) to majordomo@xmission.com ] ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 11 Aug 1998 16:11:10 -0600 (MDT) From: The Reporter Subject: [MV] Movie News - 08/11/98 It was a fierce battle at the box office over the weekend, but "Saving Private Ryan" took the hill ahead of "Snake Eyes" and "Halloween: H20" to claim victory with an estimated three-day gross of $17.2 million. On Sunday, "Ryan" - in its third weekend - became the eighth 1998 release to gross more than $100 million. Some points in this thread (some may be rumours or urban legands, but still they make a point): A G rating is considered the Kiss of Death, except for movies that are animated or have talking animals (basically Disney movies) George Lucas is rumoured to have added a few "objectionable words and phrases" to Star Wars to get the PG rating. He thought it would bomb with the G. From personal experience and what I have heard of elsewhere, 50% of the revenue in Hollywood is generated by R movies. Yet, the first R movie sold mass-market in the US was Speed. So the movie ratings in the States are used as a sales pitch, and the more adult, the better. What was once used as a guide for parents to decide if they want their children to see a movie is now used to sell that same movie to the children, as the ratings are not enforced at the theatres. And some parents don't trust the ratings, as what was once a soft R might get by with a PG, and definately a PG-13 Regards, - --Mel - --Mel Eperthener president, Gowanna Multi-media Pty email: bcassidy@usaor.net gowanna@australiamail.com http://www.webz.com/gowanna 419 Butler Street PO Box 95184 Pittsburgh, PA 15223-0184 (412) 781-6140 (412) 781-6380 1-888-45-GOWANNA -- TOLL FREE (1-888-454-6926) ____________________________________________ "Mulder, if you had to do without a cell phone for two minutes, you'd lapse into catatonic schizophrenia" - --Dana Scully ______________________________________________ [ To leave the movies mailing list, send the message "unsubscribe ] [ movies (without the quotes) to majordomo@xmission.com ] ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 10 Aug 1998 22:38:01 -0700 From: Jason Cormier Subject: [MV] Snake Eyes review Brian DePalma (Mission:Impossible) directs Nicholas Cage in a tense keep-your-eyes-on-the-screen thriller. I loved how this movie unfolded. Take note of the length of the shot from when we first meet Cage's character - it doesn't cut until the first shot is heard (which is a long, long time!!). This makes you feel as if you're right there with him - as if this is some sort of David Copperfield show where he tells you that he won't change camera shots so you can see everything for yourself and know that there is no trickery involved. This is a fun movie to watch as you are shown some scenes a multiple of times - from different people's perspective. Sometimes from the inside of a door - where you learn a little more of the plot - and sometimes on the outside - where Nicholas Cage is interrogating another character. It's a movie where you feel like you know what's going on - until someone changes the story and you have to figure it all out again. Anyway - I'm rambling now - just go see it...I give 'er an 88%.
