"Menace" has made over $400 million in the U.S. since its May 19 release - only "Titanic" shares that cinematic high-water mark. The original "Star Wars" grossed nearly $460 million, but some of that was due to its 1997 Special Edition re-release. Thanks in no small part to repeat business from swooning teen fans of Leonardo DiCaprio, "Titanic" grossed $600 million domestically. The shark pic is DEEP BLUE SEA (R), a scary action/adventure movie with Samuel L. Jackson, Saffron Burrows, Stellan Skarsgard and Jacqueline McKenzie trapped in a marine research center with some bad-attitude sharks whose intelligence has been artificially enchanced. Don't like gore? How about some Gere instead? RUNAWAY BRIDE (PG) reunites Julia Roberts and Richard Gere in a romantic comedy about a woman who has a habit of not showing up for weddings: her own. Or if you want to go all-the-way silly try MYSTERY MEN (PG-13), a comic adventure movie about a rag-tag band of not-so-super heroes with limited powers, who battle evil in their own odd way. The cast includes Hank Azaria, Janeane Garofalo, Greg Kinnear, William H. Macy, Lena Olin, Paul Rubens, Ben Stiller and Tom Waits. Also, THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT (PG-13) opens in 800 additional theaters this Friday, after setting per-screen records in its limited engagement to date. It blatantly rips off bits and scenes from a lot of sci-fi horror movies. Good ones. Sure, the up-side is the movie sort of is lighter and a little self-reflexive, so I get that a lot of it is cuteness and/or self-perceived cleverness by Williamson and Rodriquez. It does have some funny lines here and there, as well a few good sequences. It is greatly cornballish, and occasionally campy. I do like Rodriquez's style, even if the MTV editing gets a little obnoxious here and there. I agree that it's probably worth a rent. It's not great, but it is better than the typical "teen" movies out there. On a different tip, a really good movie that came out this week on video is October Sky. It's got melodrama, but it's done in a fairly non-contrived way. It's a much better movie than Faculty. There was a lot of laughter and a couple of cheers. I think the Gibson character veered from being a complete bad guy by the movie's end.. he seems a little softer, especially with regards to the hooker. He started out as a total creep, and he got sentimental. I thought he should've just been a complete ass to everyone including her. Coburn was funny, in a small role. Maybe the funniest. I agree about the happy ending. I thought, how in the world, and then it wrapped up in a big happy package. I think that's Gibson's influence. I think he changed the film's ending and reshot some it. Over the director's objections, tool; but he was one of the film's producers I believe. I think Gibson handled the issue in a relatively good way, especially with respecting the original director's (Brian Helgeland (sp??) - co-wrote the creenplay for LA Confidential) objections. I don't know that he should've changed it, but he didn't do it in a completely Hollywood ignore-ya snubby way. Still, VERY enjoyable movie all the way. MGM has announced it is in negotiations with the actor-writer-director to present "Rocky VI," about the perennial boxing underdog. (The first "Rocky," in 1977, was a surprise hit -- and Oscar's Best Picture of the Year.) Stallone, 53, declined comment on the possibility of a new "Rocky," which MGM said would cost in the neighborhood of $30 million, making it (by studio standards) a low-budget movie. * In similar comeback news, there have been reports that Paul Reubens, who currently costars in the comedy "Mystery Men" with Ben Stiller and Janeane Garofalo, is contemplating doing a third movie comedy starring his Pee-Wee Herman character. It's been a long time between Pee-Wees ("Pee-Wee's Big Adventure" was in 1985," "Big Top Pee-Wee" in '88). -=> * <=- (Launch) - "Eyes Wide Shut" director Stanley Kubrick had the last laugh at an anti-pornography crusader and longtime Kubrick critic. A scene in the movie includes a shot of a Lord Longford biography. Longford once called Kubrick's "A Clockwork Orange" "a most insidious film, potentially very dangerous." Longford, 93, is reportedly "horrified and disgusted" by the inclusion of his biography in the sexually steamy Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman flick. -=> * <=- LOS ANGELES (AP) - "The Blair Witch Project" is turning out to be a spellbinder that has some moviegoers asking for a reality check. The film's mock-documentary technique follows three young filmmakers who vanish in the woods near Burkittsville, Md., as they track a 200-year-old legendary witch. It's scary stuff for some - and apparently realistic. "One guy wrote us to say he went driving around Burkittsville and he felt this strange presence had surrounded him," said filmmaker Eduardo Sanchez, who created "Blair Witch" with Daniel Myrick. "Then he was afraid to get out of his car." It's no accident. Believability in "The Blair Witch Project" is central to its success, with the film's Web site, blairwitch.com, helping to embroider the tale. The site has a timeline of events that begins with the witch's rumored origin, and ends with details of the search for the missing film crew. It never explicitly states the story is fiction, which it is. And there's more. On cable TV's Sci-Fi Channel, an "Unsolved Mysteries"-style promotion provides interviews with family and friends of the film's missing characters. A traveling museum making the rounds at theaters exhibits "Blair Witch" lore. And a novel, purportedly written by a private detective who searched for the film crew, includes excerpts from one of their journals. -=> * <=- (Launch) - Fans of the 1982 sci-fi punchline "Tron" may finally have the last laugh. The U.K. computer news source ZDNet reports that the film - about a computer expert who gets sucked into a video game - may get a retooling from Pixar, Apple co-founder Steve Jobs' animation house which brought "Toy Story" and "A Bugs Life" to life. By today's standards, "Tron" seems downright quaint. However, at the time, the then state-of-the-art Disney movie won only praise from some critics for its special effects. -=> * <=- LOS ANGELES (Billboard) - It could be Bill Murray joining Drew Barrymore and Cameron Diaz in Columbia Pictures' big screen version of "Charlie's Angels." Sources said the studio is chasing Murray to play the role originated by David Doyle in the 1970s female detective series. The feature is angling for an October start, providing the producers can nab a third cherub to soar alongside Barrymore and Diaz. Meanwhile, Barrymore is close to climbing aboard another Columbia picture, "Driving in Cars With Boys," the Penny Marshall-directed comedy/drama about a mother's relationship with the son she gave birth to when a teenager. If the latest draft of Morgan Upton Ward's screenplay meets with the "Ever After" star's approval, she'll drive off with "Boys" immediately after wrapping up "Angels." -=> * <=- LOS ANGELES (Billboard) - Hot off his starring role in Universal Pictures' "American Pie," newcomer Jason Biggs has signed a two-picture deal with Miramax Films. The first project to be announced under the new deal is the romantic comedy "Boys and Girls" for the studio's genre label Dimension Films. Described as a "When Harry Met Sally" set in college, "Boys" stars Freddie Prinze Jr. as a young man whose friendship with a girl is tested after sex enters the mix. Biggs provides the film's comic relief, playing Prinze's outgoing, womanizing best friend. Robert Iscove ("She's All That") directs the project, which goes into production in October. People leaving the theater were heard to mutter "Well that was a waste of money" and "Kind of stupid, wasn't it?". I personally thought it was great up until the last 1/4 or so...the ending wasn't good in my opinion at all. My father was bored because of how he felt it was so slow and barely drug on in the middle. Ah well...#1 in the box office, so some people must like it. This afternoon, in fact. Not very good. The special effects were nice, and the movie did not rely on them too heavily for the first 3/4 of the film. But later on, there were scenes that made no sense (Liam Neeson getting plunged into the fountain is one), scenes that were in there for eye candy alone. And the bedroom scene with the spikes was very unconvincing; the characters did not interact with the CGI very well at all. Also, the beginning is slow, the middle is a crawl, and the whole family connection is kinda pointless. I think that if the studio and director had opted for an R rating, that would have given the movie more leeway for scarier scenes and a better end. ~Matt <> [ To leave the movies mailing list, send the message "unsubscribe ] [ movies" (without the quotes) to majordomo@xmission.com ] ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 01 Aug 1999 15:58:13 -0700 From: Oz Subject: Re: [MV] The Haunting Wez wrote: > Ah well...#1 in the box office, so some people > must like it. Being number 1 at the box office on it's opening week doesn't mean people like it, it just means they were taken in by the marketing campaign. If it's there again next week, then we can assume someone, somewhere, actually like dthe thing. ----------------- {{{OZ}}} ------------------- ------- http://www.filmink-online.com -------- ---------------------------------------------- - ---------------------------------------------------------------- Want to earn money on your website? If you've been to the movies lately, you've seen it. Terry Bradshaw and his lug-head cronies stilt their deliveries and psych-grope a captive audience for a game-length promo on the evils of asthma, not to mention the evils of wearing a suit and tie after a lifetime of 'roids. These guys would look less awkward dressed as Big Bird and the Muppets. And then there's the trailer for Kevin Costner's upcoming For The Love of the Game, which so effectively blew the whole movie in the space of a trailer, I could write the review right now. What's with Kevin and Baseball movies, anyway? All that ball-scratching has me scratching my head. A decade after we learned that romance blooms when wealth redeems hookers, and every romantic comedy should feature a scene where the gal-pal tries on clothes for her beau, Julia Roberts and Richard Gere reunite. If ever there was a sure-fire can't miss formula, Runaway Bride is it. And here's the good news, this flick ain't bad! What a silly sucker of a sap I am. The fact that this movie works is especially remarkable given the relative lack of comedy in this romantic comedy and its super-slow start. The first hour of Runaway Bride should be called RUNWAY Bride because this vehicle takes so long to get off the ground. But once those seat-backs are finally returned to their upright and locked positions, there's surprising depth and truth here. Every question ever asked about Julia's relationship with left-at-the-altar Kiefer Sutherland is answered in this movie somewhere - except the question: "What did Julia ever see in Kiefer Sutherland?" Is Runaway Bride better than Julia's other Summer flick, Notting Hill? No, not nearly, but whereas Hugh and Julia make for a slow simmer, Richard and Julia go five-alarm. Julia's chemistry with Richard Gere is almost as mysterious as Richard's marriage to Cindy Crawford. Hey, I said "almost"! What really pisses me off about Runaway Bride is that the Dalai Lama probably saw this flick weeks before I did, and where's his review? Is the domain exiledspiritualleader.com already taken? Runaway Bride is from director Garry Marshall. To me, Marshall is best known as my answer to a names-in-the-news trivia question years ago when I was trying to win a Newsweek tote bag. Newsweek asked for a famous "Marshall," and the idiot who is yours truly submitted "Garry," even though I now suspect they were looking for Supreme Court Justice Thurgood. Fortunately, Thurgood had not directed as many movies at that time, and I got the tote bag anyway. Jeez, what if I answered "Penny"? Warning: Liking this movie means overlooking many lame-ass comic missteps. Like Peggy Fleming jokes, for example, which should at least be upgraded to Dorothy Hamill jokes, converted to Tonya Harding jokes, and finally transcend the genre into full-fledged Oksana Baiul jokes. Why craft a reference that goes so far over the audience's heads Rupert Murdoch could bounce cable signals off of it? There's the hotel desk clerk who dons VR gamer glasses between guests. Not funny. There's the rainbow treatment Julia gives Richard's hair that strangely resembles the traditional Tibetan flag. Not funny. Even the glorious Joan Cusack has more gifts wasted than a horny presidential intern. Damn! You'll think it's "Three's Company" all over again when the soundtrack fires up Hall & Oates' "Maneater." Holy VH-1 Reagan-Rock! On the cutting room floor: The scene where Richard slicks back his hair and bursts out singing "When you're a Jet you're a Jet all the way from your first cigarette to your last dying day." The excruciatingly slow and dialogue-free strolls don't help matters any either. I hate to watch movies where navel-obsessed people think while cloying Soft Rock hits blast in the background. It always comes off like an infomercial for "Romantic Moods," CD or Tape, $14,99. Call now - 1-800-FREE-TIBET. Major credit cards accepted. An infinitesimal portion of our profits go to fund the hopeless but chic cause of Tibetan freedom. Our motto: "Don't be a whiner, make a statement to Chiner!" What's mystifying about this movie is the notion that the premise - a woman dumping one groom after another - is interesting enough to merit what Richard describes as the magazine "cover story" he's working on. Yawn! What magazine is this, Ignored at the Checkout Counter Weekly? If Richard's supposed to be an edgy columnist who "goes out on a limb," then why do I feel like slitting mine? What product placement for USA Today! Not only is everyone reading it, but they're all reading it aloud! Are they putting a ruler under each line? Are they sounding out the words phonetically? Known for controversy the way its known for Sunday editions, USA Today fires Richard after he writes one misogynistic diatribe too many, forcing fellow columnist Larry King to marry every offended female reader, one at a time. "In this life that you share together, may your individuality strengthen your love," says this flick, banging you over the head with its not so subtle message. Nevertheless, it's a sentiment hard to argue with in a breezy summer romance worth having. Copyright 1999 Mark Ramsey. All rights reserved. James Rudy - ----------------------------------------------------------- STAR WARS: THE PHANTOM MENACE: THE ABRIDGED SCRIPT By Rod Hilton FADE IN: INT. SPACESHIP LIAM NEESON It is vitally important we enter trade negotiations with the federation. EWAN MCGREGOR I agree. This one planet and how it trades with other planets is certainly an important enough topic to be the entire plot of a Star Wars film. INT. SPACESHIP - MAIN DECK EVIL ALIEN Werr. What wirr we do now? My evil, obviousry Asian race must prevair. I wirr not face de Jedi. Send de droid. INT. SPACESHIP - BACK TO THE JEDI A droid enters. LIAM NEESON I sense a disturbance in the force. EWAN MCGREGOR Well, shit. Suddenly, numerous pieces of CGI enter and begin attacking the Jedi. The Jedi use the high concentration of midichlorians in their bodies to use the force to destroy the CGI. They run outside. EXT. NABOO They run until they smack into some more CGI. JAR JAR Who might you be? LIAM NEESON (staring in the general direction of Jar Jar, but not really staring at him) I am a Jedi. There are bad things coming. Take me to your homeland. JAR JAR I see. That is quite interesting. I will guide you to the land from which I have come. Suddenly, GEORGE LUCAS realizes the Jar Jar toys aren't selling well enough. JAR JAR (cont'd) Oh! Meesa sorry! Meesa ment to saysa: Weesa can go back to Jamaica mon, okeyday? EWAN MCGREGOR (staring at something right above Jar Jar) Good. Do you have a hotel room for me and Liam? We have..uh..Jedi business to attend to. JAR JAR Weesa can smokesa some ganja, mon. AUDIENCE Die. Die, Jar Jar. Nobody likes you. INT. SPACESHIP - MAIN DECK The queen appears over some kind of thing which appears to be better in technology than the kinds of things in the original trilogy. NATALIE PORTMAN I am the queen. You've gone too far this time. I will tell the senate and you will be in a lot of trouble. EVIL ALIEN I'm so sorry, Amidala. NATALIE PORTMAN No, no, I'm Padme now. EVIL ALIEN I thought when in the makeup, you were the queen. NATALIE PORTMAN No, I'm whoever is playing the queen at the time. The voice changes don't help you figure this out. EVIL ALIEN Stop trying to confoose me! Droids, capture the queen.. or Padme.. er.. just capture everyone! LIAM and EWAN and, fuck, JAR JAR too take NATALIE PORTMAN and other members of her staff onto a ship and they escape. They go to Tatooine. INT. TATOOINE - SOME SHOP WHERE JAKE LLOYD IS HELD SLAVE JAKE LLOYD Hi there! Golly I'm cute. NATALIE PORTMAN You certainly are, little boy. JAKE LLOYD I'm the only one disturbed by the fact that I'm gonna bone you in episode two? LIAM NEESON Jake, I need you to have a pod race so I can get the parts I need and free you. JAKE'S MOM No, I won't allow him to pod race. He'll get hurt. (pause) Ok, I will. Nevermind. Good luck. They pod race. It looks really COOL. GEORGE LUCAS (attempting subtlety) Oh! Look! There's a video game of this scene... uh.. buy it! Hey, I had to sacrifice a part of my grand vision for these movies to include a part that could be turned into a game, so buy it or I'll do it even more in episode 2. JAKE wins! He has to leave his mother, which will become very important in the next movie. He also has to leave his protocol droid, THREEPIO. AUDIENCE He built C-3PO? Why wasn't this ever mentioned in the original trilogy? GEORGE LUCAS Because I just made it up. Speaking of stuff I'm just making up, how do you like the midichlorian bullshit I pulled out of my ass? They all get into their ship and go to Coruscant. INT. CORUSCANT - JEDI COUNCIL LIAM NEESON I want to train this boy. YODA Nope. Sorry. Too old the boy is. Clouded his future seems. Vague my worries are. LIAM NEESON Well, he is the chosen one. He will bring balance to the force. I'm training him. SAMUEL L. JACKSON Yoda told you no, muthafucka. What the fuck is wrong with you, bitchass? I'll fuckin' kill you! I'm gonna be a fuckin bad ass in the next two fuckin movies, you know. My toy has a fuckin lightsaber. LIAM NEESON I'm going to go over your head and train him myself, then. So there. He exits. INT. GALACTIC SENATE MEETING IAN MCDIARMID Damn I'm evil. Suddenly, we see E.T! This does not make the film HYPER- CUTESEY like Return of the Jedi, but CLEVER. EXT. NABOO NATALIE PORTMAN I am either the queen or Padme now. Regardless, your cheesy-looking race of annoying, unrealistic characters need to ally with our badly acting race of creatures so we can capture this one guy. BOSS NASS One guy? The climax of this film revolves entirely around us capturing one, pretty insignificant guy? Doesn't that make this whole thing kinda pointless? NATALIE PORTMAN No more pointless than the fact that this entire film revolves around taxes on trade and the cutting off of one, pathetic little planet half-filled with annoying creatures. They go after the bad guy or whatever. Who cares? Finally DARTH MAUL shows up for a prolonged fight sequence. Darth wears black boots, a black cloak, a black shirt, has a red lightsaber, wears red and black face paint, and has horns. He is EVIL. Meanwhile, the Naboo people go after this one insignificant guy and we really don't care. Meanwhile, the Gungans go against a bunch of droids and we really don't care except we want the Gungans to die. Meanwhile, Anakin takes off into space to join the space- battle, which is mostly over by the time he arrives. We care a little bit. INT. SOME KIND OF THINGY WITH SOME RED FORCE FIELDS MAUL, LIAM, and EWAN all have a huge lightsaber battle which has had a lot of effort put into the choreography and is thousands of times better than any other lightsaber battle in a Star Wars film. AUDIENCE Whoa! This is really cool! Suddenly, we go back to one of the other three stupid battles going on at the time. Eventually, we return to the good one. DARTH MAUL (menacing as hell) Grrr. Eventually, MAUL stabs LIAM, which is very surprising, especially to those of us who bought the film score which has a song whose title gives away the ending. He then kicks EWAN into a shaft. EWAN grabs onto something on the side and holds on for dear life. EWAN MCGREGOR Well, you certainly are an experienced fighter and there is little question you could kick pretty much anyone's ass. DARTH MAUL (cont'd) Muahahahaha. Slowly, EWAN uses the force to grab LIAM'S lightsaber, jump up out of the shaft, over MAUL, press the button on the saber, and slice MAUL in half while MAUL stands there like an idiot and does nothing at all. He dies. EXT. SPACE JAKE LLOYD Whoaaaaa! I'm in space! Now this is pod racing! Yipee! Uh oh! Man, I'm so cute. JAKE goes into a hangar, where the main reactor for the ship is kept. He accidentally blows it to SHIT. JAKE LLOYD (cont'd) Uh oh! I better leave! Let's leave Artoo! They exit quickly. The ship explodes, which stops all the droids and just makes everything great, because it's always enjoyable when a serious conflict is resolved with a slapstick accident. EXT. THE STREETS OF NABOO The Gungans are dancing and such, still alive. A huge party ensues. AUDIENCE Wow! Watching this party and all this celebration has convinced me that the tiny, pathetic problem that has been taken care of is actually really significant! Hooray! Suddenly, the AUDIENCE realizes that behind all the mindless celebration and kiddie cartoon bullshit, what actually happened was the future-emperor has actually manipulated everything, come into great power, and that one tiny problem has actually been resolved, but thousands more have been created. GEORGE LUCAS Three years, suckers. I'd make them come out sooner, but I work very hard on my films, as I am an independent filmmaker due to my disgust with Hollywood's commercialism. Now go buy some Star Wars toys!
