I know that this started as an issue on spoilers, but I think Wade's post also brings up another issue ... general information about movies. A prime example would be the recent movie - THE SIXTH SENSE. I have seen it, and I liked it. I thought the performances were solid, especially Haley Joel Osmet who gave a brilliant performance, regardless of age. My main problem is the ad campaign ... and here come the spoilers. They are minor, but as Ward pointed out ... what I some may think is common knowledge may be nuggets of treasure to others. So, with that in mind ..... S P O I for EMPIRE STRIKES BACK L and GONE WITH THE WIND E and THE SIXTH SENSE R S The movie was set up to begin with the uncertainty of young Cole's visions/actions. To know, definitely, from the previews and press that he truly CAN see spirits .... it weakens the tension. It doesn't destroy it completely, but it definitely lessens it in a way. And, made the final moment of Dr. Crowe's realization something I saw coming FAR FAR in advance. I know now that Darth Vader is Luke's father ... but god help anyone if they had told me before the first time I saw EMPIRE. I know now that poor Bonnie Blue Butler dies, but I still want to kill the person that ruined that for me. I imagine what the first viewing of BLAIR WITCH must have been like without anyone knowing anything about it ... the mystery of "is it real, is it staged" floating through their minds. I envy them ... and pity them at the same time. I personally enjoy getting as much advance info as I can, but I seek it out. And I dislike people that spring it on me without my permission, even if they are giving me information that I would have been searching for myself. (I don't say that in reference to the, in my opinion, simple "OOPS" around DEEP BLUE SEA that started all of this, by the way.) Sometime movies are just movies, and sometimes they are mysterious things to be discovered as you go along. I like them both ways, but I don't like it when people make the choice for me. That is all. Nolan" Subject: [MV] Re: Spoilers I just saw THE SIXTH SENSE, and while I knew what it was about in a general sense, I did not know the "surprise" ending in advance. I figured out what was going on about a half-hour into the movie, but this did not spoil it for me, because the movie is about a process, a relationship, and not just a buildup to a punchline. Would I have enjoyed the movie less if someone had told me what is revealed at the end? Yes, because part of the fun is trying to figure out where things are going. Obviously, one person's spoiler is another's "so what?" I think we all knew, going into TITANIC, that the ship sinks. And because we see Rose as a hundred-year-old woman, there's no suspense over whether she'll survive. As for Jack ... well, I don't want to give anything away. Likewise, I doubt that very many people really thought that humanity was going to be wiped out in either ARMAGEDDON or DEEP IMPACT, so revealing "the ending" doesn't spoil either movie. (Not that either is very good to begin with!) Revealing who gets eaten in a shark movie is a bit dicier. It takes the edge off, but it doesn't invalidate the whole movie experience, at least in my opinion. I mean, hey, it's a "sharks on the rampage" movie. You know _someone's_ gonna get chewed up! Other movies like VERTIGO, or THE USUAL SUSPECTS, really lose a lot if you know the ending going in, and anyone who gives it away on purpose is a jerk. So, in my opinion, the best practice is not to reveal anything that isn't common knowledge (the Titanic sank; the Hindenburg blew up; the South lost the Civil War). Talk about the acting, the directing, the production, the dialog, etc. but don't discuss storyline details. That's not too tough, is it? Imagine knowing things about Usual Suspects or Resevoir Dogs or The Spanish Prisoner or The Game or Presumed Innocent etc... I enjoy when I get to see the movie unfold as the director intended it to - not by getting pieces of information about the movie before it even opens. As far as the Deep Blue Sea goes - a great action flick - I saw it opening night (as I often do to avoid spoilers) and when the aforementioned scene occured the audience was floored!! It was a great time! If I had known that earlier I would have just said - Oh yeah - this scene. Well that's my two cents - or more like eight cents really. let's keep spoilers out and good times in...! - -----Original Message----- From: owner-movies@lists.xmission.com [mailto:owner-movies@lists.xmission.com]On Behalf Of Josh Pritchard Sent: Tuesday, August 24, 1999 2:51 PM To: movies@lists.xmission.com Subject: [MV] Re: Blowing movie secrets (with EMPIRE STRIKES BACK, GONE WITH THE WIND & SIXTH SENSE spoilers - minor) >i do have a pet peeve about that kind of thing, though.
