I'd really like to know. Well, TECHNICALLY, I agree with Oz. And this is why: Right now I am enjoying these things. But from past experience here, I suspect I would be better off subbing myself, and just having you post us those instructions. Why?? Well beyond the fact that we have had this EXACT same argument before (the results of which I will get to), I think it would be better to guarentee either that we will get this or not get this. Besides, for some unknown reason, it seems that the members of this list think that ONE message is bad, but *20* messages arguing about said message is good:-) But the true reason for not wanting this stuff sent to the list is that it seems to eventually dry up. Remember all of the movie reviews that we used to get here?? Luckily, I subbed to MovieJuice and FlickFilosopher, because suddenly they dried up. I think this is as major a reason for not sending the actual message (without sub info) as is Oz's concerns. If we actually like what comes by, what guarentee do we have that you will still forward it next week?? I think personally the best bet to perhaps to provide a sample of the message/list to let us determine our interest in it, and provide sub info. Gee, where have I heard that before?? Of all the list's I've ever subscribed to, this is the one I've never left. Why?? The list has taken on a personality all off it's own, thanks to the various personalities of it's subscribers. It amuses me. I hope it stays exactly like it is. Could be this list might get advertised by PCWORLD or something, which would probably bring it to a grinding halt, but right now, it's good, and I like it. 2 - Just got done watching "That Thing You Do" on VH1. One thing struck me about this movie - Liv Tyler. Armageddon had the same effect. I didn't like the movie, but every time Liv hit the screen she grabbed it and didn't let go. Now, being a male, after watching Armageddon (which I didn't like) my best guess was, I was simply struck by her undeniable beauty. After watching "That Thing You Do", I'm not so sure. She stole every scene in that movie, as (I thought) she did in Armageddon. I think this lady is a real star. Greda Garbo, Mariloyn Monroe, and Ingrid Bergman come to mind. Is she on the same level?? What do y'all think?? Peter Kassovitz) Take a piece of raw bacon and hold it at one end and swallow the bacon - then pull it back out again. This action and Jakob the Liar will give you the same reflex. If you have any desire to swallow this tripe and see this flick then go and see Life is Beautiful instead and leave well enough alone. Jakob eventually gets around to pretending that he has a radio (which is strictly prohibitted for a Jew to have a radio) and he gives everyone hope that the end of WWII will soon be near. Ironies of ironies is that Life is Beautiful is based on the book, Jakob the Liar. I fear the advertising campaign for this unfunny and untouching crappola. Fail. 12:30 Pm The Big Kahuna (dir. John Swanbeck) Finally - a good movie - almost forgot what they looked like! Based on the play 'Honeymoon Suite' and written by the same writer (Roger Rueff) this movie is basically about a sales pitch. Kevin Spacey and Danny DeVito are honestly superb as two experienced marketting reps who are trying to set up a party so that they can meet the big kahuna of another company and give him their sales pitch for their industrial lubrication. There is a lot of clever and sarcastic humour throughout which gives a good balance to some of the religious belief questions raised. Entirely entertaining in every way. 92%! Star Interaction: When asked about the shooting schedule Kevin Spacey said that it took 16 days to shoot this film. What is even more amazing is that he said that he finished shooting American Beauty and 5 days later he began a three week rehearsal period for a play he was in in New York. He did that in the daytime and at night he filmed The Big Kahuna!! Cool and funny guy - he apologized for being in a 'silly mood!' 3:30 PM Black and White (dir. James Toback) I think to truly enjoy this film that you would have to be somewhat interested in the subject matter - hip hop - which I am not. That is not to say that it is a bad film - the multiple storylines were entertaining and I never really found myself bored. A lot of 'brand' names appear in this flick - Claudia Shiffer, Robert Downey Jr., Mike Tyson (eerily playing himself), Ben Stiller and Brooke Shields. 65% for not boring me. Star Sighting: Robert Downey Jr. showed up in his prison outfit - with handcuffs and all! (insert sarcasm there) 9:00 PM Simon the Magician (dir. (Ildiko Enyedi) Chickens flying high above can tarnish their careers by utilizing an implementation of death which was created by their nemesis - the turkey. Never satisfied with a smile the hybrid assumes too much yet has still never really achieved climax. The preceeding review was exactly like the movie - pointless. 12:00 AM Midnight Madness Fever (dir. Alex Winter) Although a fairly uncomlicated plot I feel that this movie could have been more satisfying if it properly tied together the knot of the loose ends. Jolting at times, assisted by the eerie music and creepy images, this is a movie which borrows from Crime and Punishment as well as Polanski's The Tenant. An alternate title could be Henry: Portrait of a Somnambulist - due to the fact that Henry Thomas's (E.T.) character was a sleep walker. Entertaining - but a movie like this requires more explanation. 71%. Star Sighting: Alex Winter - I was going to ask him "If you had been Ted and Keanu Reeves was Bill do you think your lives would have turned out differently? - but I didn't.) Also saw Henry Thomas of E.T. fame - he's older now. Watching these shorts made me wonder if they were an exercise for a class project. It is films like these that give a bad name to 'artsy' films. It is with films like these in mind that people decide not to go see 'good' art cinema like Run Lola Run, Twin Falls Idaho or Opposite of Sex. Sorry - didn't mean to be so negative but it just amazes me to think that so many people had to believe in these films to get them made and this was the final product. Fail. 12:30 PM Wadd: The Life and Times of John C. Holmes (dir. Cass Paley) Part of the midnight madness selections this is a poorly made documentary that would have played better as a one hour episode of Biography instead of a two full hour film. John C. Holmes as you may know (and I'm sure you know who I'm talking to) is the biggest porn star that ever lived - and when I say biggest - I mean biggest...if you know what I mean. The film is interviews with the women he's been with or married and people involved with him in his 'professional' life. Too many times the same thing is said over and over and you know how annoying it can be when someone says something over and over too many times - it can get really annoying - too many times... Go back to the editting room, make some cuts (ouch! I'm talking the film here)- and while you're at it find some sort of narrative flow and you've got yourself something interesting. Fail. 3:15 PM Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai (dir. Jim Jarmusch) Ghost Dog (Forest Whitaker) is a modern day samurai/hitman for the mob. His character is fairly uncharismatic and unethusiastic which lessened my enjoyment of the film. When Ghost Dog kills the wrong guy he has the entire mob after him. Fairly entertaining but also fairly pedantic - connect the dots. No surprises here but I am told that if you're into philosophy and Japanes literature then you would enjoy it a lot more. 68%. Star Interaction: When asked whether he thought his film glorified killing or not Jarmusch replied by saying that he thinks it is ridiculous that the imagination of one person should be held responsible for other people's actions. Good answer! 6:30 PM Gemini (dir. Shinya Tsukamoto) Set in a traditional Japanese environment this tale focuses on the love between Yukio and Rin and a mysterious stranger and Rin. The tale seems incomprehensible at first but it unfolds rather nicely as the plot takes a scary turn as someone ends up at the bottom of a very deep well. Good music and pace make this pretty entertaining. I might have even enjoyed it more if it weren't for my ignorance of Japanese culture. A dark and fun movie which is a departure for Shinya who was at the festival a few years ago with a more visceral Tokyo Fist. 82%. 9:00 PM Dreamtrips (dir. Kal Ng) How do I pick these films? I mean it sounded pretty cool from the description - a company called Dreamtrips allows you to 'live' your dreams. All sorts of possibilities - including this supremely boring dud. That's all I have to say about that. Fail. 12:00 AM Midnight Madness Possessed / Besat (dir. Anders Ronnow-Klarlund) Even by telling you that I cannot tell you much about this film for fear of ruining some nice surprises - is telling you too much. Needless to say this is a movie about a virologist who fears that after two people end up dead with Ebola-like symptoms that the virus might be on the loose. Set in Denmark and Romania this is a very well crafted story that will slap you in the face a few times as you try to put the puzzle together. I can say nothing more. 87% Check out www.darkhorizons.com for all my reviews (under News and Rumours section) as well as for all the newest info about movies you need! Great site. Now I am tired. Bye bye. :-) Movieman [ To leave the movies mailing list, send the message "unsubscribe ] [ movies" (without the quotes) to majordomo@xmission.com ] ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 19 Sep 1999 14:07:12 -0700 From: "Movieman" Subject: [MV] Film Fest - Friday Sept. 17 9:30 AM Jakob the Liar (dir. Remember to check out www.darkhorizons.com for all your new movie information (as well as all my reviews for the fest if you missed any of them and can't live without them!). Movieman [ To leave the movies mailing list, send the message "unsubscribe ] [ movies" (without the quotes) to majordomo@xmission.com ] ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 19 Sep 1999 14:05:12 -0700 From: "Movieman" Subject: [MV] Film Fest - Saturday Sept. 18 Final Day of the film fest! 9:45 AM Buddy Boy (dir. Mark Hanlon) It is movies like these that remind me why I like movies so much - deep, rich characters, well paced and totally crazy! Francis takes care of his crippled mother and after 'saving' the girl across the street from a mugging he becomes implicated in a relationship - that's really about the only way to phrase it! Francis questions his faith in God and this leads to some crazy visuals as his voyeurism forces him to question his faith in his 'girlfriend.' Great film with some scenes that will blow you away! 91%. Star Interaction: I asked Mark Hanlon if he had seen Roman Polanki's The Tenant and he said that he was greatly influenced by Polanski - as there is a few scenes that 'borrow' from The Tenant. Nothing really wrong with that as he made it work in his movie too. Patted him on the back and told him it was great and he thanked me! 12:00 PM Breakfast of Champions (dr. Alan Rudolph) The Sixth Sense, Armageddon, Fifth Element and the Die Hard trilogy. Bonfire of the Vanities, Hudson Hawk, Colour of Night and Breakfast of Champions. I have not read Kurt Vonnegut Jr.'s novel on which this is based so I am not sure if a reading of it is needed to make some sense out of this ridiculous rubbish or not. At times it is cartoony while at other times it seems that they are trying to solve the mysteries of life. Nick Nolte does do a good job as he attempts to repress his desire to wear woman's clothing. This movie is nonsense. Fail. 2:45 PM Bullets Over Summer (dir. Wilson Yip) This movie didn't really know what it wanted to be. It starts out as a John Woo-like shoot 'em up but ends up being an unspectaular comedy. The 2 or 3 action scenes were ok as were the 2 or 3 laughs throughout - but nothing more. 60%. 7:00 PM Princess Mononoke (dir. Hayao Miyazaki) The only animated flick at the fest this year and it definitely has a grandiose and epic feel to it. It starts off with a bang - an amazingly animated demon battles our protagonist and leaves him with a curse that will eventually take over his body and kill him unless he can find the forest god and beg him for a cure. Many subplots and characters keep the action moving but I am sure that some things might have been lost through the translation (even though the translation was written by Sandman scribe Niel Gaiman). This is a feast for Anime fans though I am sure that they would prefer (as I would) the subtitled version rather than the more 'accessible' American version which boasts the voice talents of Billy Bob Thornton, Gillian Anderson, Claire Danes and Jada Pinkett Smith. It is odd to see a Japanese character with a Japanese name but sounding like the country hick - Billy Bob Thornton! Very well done though - 80%. Star Sighting: For the Anime fans - Hayao Miyazaki was there and he received the only full standing ovation I have seen all week. He said that he thinks that this film will be apreciated more in the future than at present. Time will tell. I was planning on seeing the final Midnight Madness, Gamera 3, but I was so exhausted that I gave up! www.darkhorizons.com is awaiting your presence. Check it out. I can't wait to see it in the cinema. one thing I didn't catch though was what was the thing wrapped up in the bundle of sticks that was outside the tent the night after josh disappeared? Very very realistic and reminded me of Texas Chainsaw and the original Evil Dead for it's impact. I can easily understand how some people could be mistaken in thinking there was some reality to the project as it rang very true and real. I can't wait to see We only had one chance to watch it in the movies a few weeks back and it was without a doubt the absolute worst excuse for a movie we have ever seen. There was nothing exciting or scary about the movie at all. 50% of the dialog started with the letter F. Not that we are prudes but the dialog sounded like it was written by an eight year old. We did not have to wait in line to get in but did have to wait in the refund line when it was over. Three couples were ahead of us in line demanding a refund. We got passes for another show of our choice. The theater manager said he had more requests for refunds on this movie than on any other film since the theater had opened. Truly BAD MOVIE. Actually calling it a movie is an insult to the word movie. The cast, producers and director were present and there was a Question and Answer session following the screening. This is a truly special film. A film that defies any attempt at categorizing. American Beauty runs the gamut of emotions, from happiness and elation to bitterness, contempt and violent anger. The acting is superb, and it is more than a fitting compliment to the crisp and intelligent script, and wonderful direction. Dreamworks is very proud of this film, and they have a reason to be... American Beauty opened in New York and Los Angeles on Sept 15th opens in 700 additional theaters nationwide, on Oct 1st Go see it, the early Oscar buzz on this one is more than deserved... Actually calling it a movie is an insult to the word movie. My God I can't believe there are people out there with absolutely no taste in movies. This was without a doubt one of the finest pieces of work ever to be laid down on celluloid, so how you can justify standing in line for a refund boggles the mind. in fact no cinema should have to refund a patron for any movie, imagine taking a bus or a plane and after the flight trying to get your money back because the driver or pilot didn't do the job you expected. If you don't like a film you don't deserve to get your money back ever, just go home and complain about it to the walls. and yes you are definitely prudes if you thought the language was graphic, haven't seen South Park the movie yet have you?
