John Hoffman's screenplay is loosely based on Shana Alexander's book "When She Was Bad: The Story of Bess, Hortense, Sukhreet and Nancy," and tells the story of the 1945 Miss America who became a Senate candidate, only to become embroiled in a series of scandals in the late 1980s. Close most recently starred in Robert Altman's "Cookie's Fortune" and provided the voice of Kala in "Tarzan." Condon earned an Academy Award last year for his adapted screenplay "Gods and Monsters," which he also directed. -=> * <=- LOS ANGELES (Billboard) - Two years after the release of "Batman & Robin," Warner Bros. is discussing bringing back the caped crusader for a fifth installment of the famed "Batman" live-action feature franchise. Although no scripts have yet been penned, sources said two possibilities for the story have been batted about, one called "Batman Year One" and one based on the animated WB series "Batman Beyond." "Year One" would be based on the four-issue comic book miniseries that chronicles Bruce Wayne from college grad to his Batman transformation to his first mission as a superhero. The premise of "Beyond," which has already been adapted to made-for-video movies, finds an elderly Bruce Wayne, retired from his role, passing his high-tech suit to Terry McGinnis, a high school teen who discovers the millionaire's secret identity and dons cape and cowl, creating a new hero for Gotham City. -=> * <=- NEW YORK (Billboard) - "The Blair Witch Project" star Heather Donahue has been tapped to star in Derek Simonds' indie comedy-drama "Seven and a Match." The ensemble cast also features Adam Scott ("Party of Five"), Tina Holmes ("Edge of Seventeen") and Eion Bailey ("Fight Club"). "Seven and a Match" marks the feature film directing debut of Connecticut-born writer-director Simonds. Shooting is set to begin Monday on Fisher's Island in New York. The story follows seven friends who return to a vacation house where they spent the summer after graduation from college four years earlier. The bank is threatening to foreclose on the house, which one of the group inherited from her recently deceased parents. Now broke, she proposes that they burn it down to collect the insurance money. -=> * <=- PAULY SHORE GETS WITCHY: Aging Valley Boy Pauly Shore is set to host and star in something called The Bogus Witch Project, a compilation of various Blair Witch Project spoofs combined with comedic sketches starring Shore. The flick, produced by Trimark Entertainment, is scheduled for release in early 2000. The 37-year-old actress says she refuses to star in the sequel to "Silence of the Lambs" because it's too grisly and isn't true to FBI agent Clarice Starling, the character Foster played in the first movie. In "Hannibal," Starling becomes a cannibal like the title role Hannibal Lecter. "I stand to make more money doing that sequel than I've ever made in my life," Foster says in the December issue of "W" magazine. "But who cares, if it betrays Clarice - who is a person, in some strange way, to me. The movie worked because people believed in her heroism. I won't play her with negative attributes she'd never have." In her next movie, Foster is Anna Leonowens, an English governess who travels to Thailand in 1862, in "Anna and the King," to be released around Christmas. -=> * <=- LOS ANGELES (Billboard) - Fox has plunked down a mid six-figure sum against high six figures for "Sonny Bright," an offbeat comedy spec script for Peter and Bobby Farrelly to produce and Doug Liman to helm. The script by Wayne A. Rice and Gina Goldman ("Suicide Kings") went out Thursday to producers Jerry Bruckheimer, Denise DiNovi and the Farrelly brothers. TCF, formerly 20th Century Fox, snatched up the material late Friday for the Farrellys. "Sonny Bright" tells the story of a low-level Department of Defense employee whose life is turned upside down after an ex-con sitting next to him on a flight to Florida dies aloft. The ex-con was on his way to visit a woman he met on the Internet, and the DOD employee takes it upon himself to locate the woman and explain what happened. What he finds is a beautiful woman who plotted her own kidnapping with the deceased ex-con to free her from her mobster husband. -=> * <=- LOS ANGELES (Billboard) - Ice Cube's Cube Vision has linked arms with Cube's management company, the Firm, and Endangered Species Pictures to produce the low-budget indie feature "Stoop," a film that aims to replicate Cube's hit "Friday" with an East Coast perspective. "Stoop" will be the feature-writing and directing debut of Jean Claude La Marre, an actor whose credits include "Basquiat" and "Dead Presidents." Budgeted in the $1 million range, "Stoop" is expected to begin production on location in Brooklyn early next year. -=> * <=- LOS ANGELES (Billboard) - Castle Rock Entertainment has paid mid-six against high-six figures for a feature film comedy pitch tentatively titled "Envy" from "Seinfeld" co-creator Larry David and writer Steve Adams. The project reteams David and Adams for the first time in nearly 20 years. Both were writers on ABC sketch comedy show "Fridays" (1980-82), in which David also performed. "Envy" is the story of two family men who are best friends, neighbors and do the same kind of job for the same company. When one of the men becomes wildly rich but continues to live in the same home, his friend becomes consumed with envy. "This story explores the black heart of envy and the strain it puts on people - all in the name of comedy," Adams said. "If you look at the tracking of my life and Larry's, we were at the same level professionally and financially for 10 years, then Jerry Seinfeld approached him and everything changed. Because we were always such good friends, it never disrupted our relationship, but it certainly could have. 'Envy' is a 'what if' situation, and Larry and I are going to play that out." -=> * <=- LOS ANGELES (Billboard) - Paul Giamatti, fondly known as Pig Vomit for his role as Howard Stern's boss in "Private Parts," is set to star alongside Martin Lawrence and Nia Long in the 20th Century Fox comedy "Big Momma's House." The project was sidelined in August when Lawrence collapsed while jogging and lay in a coma for three days before regaining consciousness. This will be his first project since the collapse. The project is now expected to start in mid-January with Raja Gosnell ("Never Been Kissed") at the helm. The story revolves around a cop (Lawrence) forced to conceal his identity by impersonating a crass Southern granny known as Big Momma. Giamatti plays Lawrence's best friend and partner on the job, who also gets involved in the escapade. Walt Disney Studio's Touchstone Pictures produced "The Insider," the story of whistle-blower Jeffrey Wigand, former head of research at the tobacco company. Wigand accused the company of manipulating nicotine levels in cigarettes and lying to Congress about nicotine's addictive power. On Saturday night at Loews Cineplex in Edina, a woman passed out cards to patrons in the concessions line, asking that they call a toll-free number and answer a few important questions about the film. Patrons also were approached inside the Highland Theater in St. Paul. Neither the card nor the survey revealed that it was done for the cigarette company. "We didn't want to bias them by telling who was commissioning the survey," said Mark Smith, a Brown & Williamson spokesman. Moviegoers were also surveyed in New York, Washington, Los Angeles, Miami, Macon, Ga. and Louisville, Ky. Respondents were asked questions like: "Based on how events were depicted, do you believe Brown & Williamson Tobacco threatened Jeffrey Wigand or his family with physical harm?" and, "After seeing this movie, do you have a more favorable or less favorable impression of Brown & Williamson Tobacco?" The movie opened Friday and grossed $7 million over the weekend. Smith said the survey was to gauge the damage the film has caused his company. -=> * <=- LOS ANGELES (Billboard) - After a weekend bidding war, Columbia Pictures emerged the big winner Monday, shelling out an estimated $5 million to filmmaker Brian Helgeland to direct and produce his script "A Knight's Tale," sources said. Helgeland, the Oscar-winning "L.A. Confidential" scribe, most recently penned and helmed the Mel Gibson starrer "Payback," which took in $81.5 million domestically for Paramount Pictures. While sources are fairly tight-lipped about the plot of "Tale," it has been described as an action-adventure-romance set in the medieval world of jousting. Helgeland will produce "A Knight's Tale" with Tim Van Rellim ("Ravenous"). -=> * <=- LOS ANGELES (Billboard) - MGM has picked up Kristin Rusk and Ian Deitchman's spec script "Wildest Dreams" for Sandra Bullock to produce through her Fortis Films production company. Bullock has produced a number of films including Hollywood Pictures' upcoming "Gun Shy" starring Liam Neeson and Oliver Platt. Her company also co-produced the Bullock starrers "Hope Floats" and "Practical Magic." "Dreams" tells the story of two strangers - a young widow and a firefighter - who come together after mysteriously experiencing each other's dreams. Through the dreams, each is able to confront their inner demons. Bullock next stars in Columbia Pictures' "28 Days." -=> * <=- LOS ANGELES (Billboard) - Monty Python's John Cleese has become a new member of an even more famous British institution, the James Bond franchise. Cleese, 60, who plays the comical "young assistant" to venerable gadget armourer "Q" (85-year-old Desmond Llewelyn) in "The World Is Not Enough," has already signed on for three more 007 movies. Noting that it's relatively easy work for good pay, Cleese said he only spent two days working on the new Bond picture, one of which was just five days before his hip surgery. He said he and Llewelyn kept each other amused during the "boring" hours of downtime on the set. But Llewelyn, Cleese and longtime Bond producer Michael Wilson all say that despite the introduction of an assistant to "Q" Llewelyn will continue to play the role as long as he wants. -=> * <=- LOS ANGELES (Billboard) - New Line Cinema has shelled out $2 million for "River Road," an allegorical tale by "The Truman Show" scribe Andrew Niccol, who will also direct from his script and produce the project with Jersey Films. "River" will mark Niccol's second feature film directorial effort, having helmed 1997's Ethan Hawke-Uma Thurman starrer "Gattaca" from his own script. Described as a heroic escape story set in a fictional border town, "River Road" is said to be a powerful allegory about the triumph of the human spirit over oppressive borders, both physical and symbolic. Jersey Films' Danny DeVito, Michael Shamberg and Stacey Sher will share producing duties with Niccol. Location scouting has begun, with hopes of starting production as early as spring. Luc Besson's Joan is the kind of thing you'd expect from a Frenchman who dwells obsessively on cologne and hair care products. Believe me, the only reason this movie should open wide is to say "Ahhhhh." How can we expect supermodel as supermartyr Milla to draw a crowd when she can't draw her name? Is an off-camera P.A. feeding her letters? "Deux 'L's? Iz dees some cruel treek?" By the time Dustin Hoffman pops up in a character role, get me the Captain Hook. My Tootsies are out of here. DOGMA, meanwhile, is the controversial and long-awaited newbie from the director of Clerks and Chasing Amy. There's scads of outrageously funny stuff in DOGMA which easily makes it worth seeing. But DOGMA is full of muses and seraphims and demons and prophets and scions and more Catholic jargon than you can shake a Eucharist at. Some of the dialogue is so densely foggy, the audience had to land at a different airport and take a bus to the theater. Watch! As the audience's heads whir and spin in spontaneous stimulus-overload convulsions as the rat-a-tat-tat theology impacts the crowd like so much spiritual shrapnel. What are Matt Damon and Ben Affleck talking about, anyway? And they want to go to New Jersey why? There's a loophole in Catholic dogma, it seems, that will allow fallen angels Matt and Ben back into Heaven, if not back to Gwyneth's house for high tea. Problem is, it will mean the end of all existence and perhaps even the end of The Real World reruns. So heroes Linda Fiorentino, Chris Rock, and hilarious stoners Jay and Silent Bob must stop Matt and Ben or face oblivion (which means, Jay, you're not getting laid). Alan Rickman returns from the cinematic dead to show once again what a brilliant comic actor he is. In contrast, brilliant comic Chris Rock shows he can't act worth a damn. Chris's funny stuff is fierce, but the straight dialogue brings to mind visions of high school theater and SNL cue-cards. Willow, you've met your match! DOGMA is a modestly budgeted affair with little pretense. Yes, the effects are cheesy and intentionally so. Case and point: The "Shit Demon," who's just seconds away from stomping Japanese doll-houses and kicking Hot Wheels. You've probably heard by now that Alanis Morrisette plays God. Or at least she was God - until her divine sophomore slump. Who would have guessed the Heavenly Father is such a spaz in concert? Picture Mother Nature clothed by Betsey Johnson. Is this the God of Abraham or the God of Birkenstock and bulk foods? Alanis has the body of Christ all right, and I'm hoping she keeps it to herself. When satire and religion mix, controversy follows. Witness this recent missive from the Catholic League to Lions Gate, the movie's distributors: - -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- November, 1999 Dear Lions Gate: Are your Lions guarding the Gates of Hell?? How dare you besmirch the name of Job himself? As we like to say at the Catholic League, "Job is job one." Where do we begin to detail our objections to your movie, DOGMA: 1. The notion of a 13th apostle - and a negroid with an HBO deal at that - is patently offensive. 2. The suggestion that Christ was Black is preposterous - if this were true, he would have been the son of a minstrel, not a carpenter. 3. The idea that God is a woman - let alone one who wears a tutu, gesticulates like a retard, and doesn't sing Country - is likewise repellent. God is a man with a white beard and a flowing robe, like Laurence Olivier in Clash of the Titans. And he has a bad case of toenail fungus, but that's neither here nor there. 4. British actor Alan Rickman plays "the voice of God." Ridiculous! Brits don't go to Heaven, only white people do. 5. You have Ben Affleck and Matt Damon playing angels who are buddies. These are angels - heavenly messengers - not Mel Gibson and Danny Glover in Lethal Weapon! Perhaps if you could cast that nice Olivia Newton John in one of your upcoming features, we'll actually see the movie before issuing our objections. Until then, we don't need to feel the flames of Hell to know our everlasting souls can get burned! Sincerely hoping that President Roosevelt outlaws this picture, Jack Valenti President, Catholic League and Papal Emissary to the MPAA ratings board - -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- In the climactic face-off between good and evil, Ben and Matt don Roman-style breastplates with stainless steel nipples. With wings unfurled, Ben looks like the Hawkman float at the Pride parade. DOGMA is a riot, even if it's a notch short of heavenly. Copyright 1999 Mark Ramsey. All rights reserved. "schlinder's list" is of course a masterful film (note that i do not say that it is a "good" film), but if i understand the guys request right, i dont think schlinder's list would really it. films like "shawshank redemption" make one cry because they are beautiful stories. films like "schlinder's list" make one cry because of how upsetting it is that such a film is a true story. even if it were not true, it would be a difficult film, but as it is true, it is a terribly wrenching film to watch. I'm a Japanese girl who just loves american movies. For Japanese, they(american movies) are much more popular than Japanese ones. "My girl", "The Shawshank...", "Beaches", and "Schindler's List"--oh yeah, I've seen those and did like them. I agree with Mark's comment for "Schindler's.." though. I cried for it with a different meaning.(it was hard to watch.) I can't wait to go BLOCKBUSTER to get those other movies you guys recommended. I'm sure I'll cry all this weekend. If you've already seen those, a good choice would be THE STRAIGHT STORY. It's not "romantic," but it's very "warm hearted" -- almost a "tear jerker." Unfortunately, it's only showing in about 200 theaters, nationwide. Let's begin with The Limey from director Steven Soderberg who brought us sex, lies and videotape as well as last year's critic's darling Out Of Sight. The Limey stars Terrance Stamp as a British bloke who is out for revenge for the death of his daughter - who he hasn't even seen in many years because he's been in jail. The tale is told in a similar way that Out Of Sight was told - lots of cuts and flip-flopping around to different scenes. The Limey is on super cut mode though and it is my favourite thing about the movie - not that the story wasn't good...but it did seem fairly straight forward. I enjoyed it thouroughly and would recommend it to those who are looking for a good revenge movie! 76%. The Messenger is directed by Luc Besson who has brought us Fifth Element and The Professional (his American flicks anyway!) now brings his wife, Milla Jovovich back into action - this time as the driven and determined Joan of Arc. Milla, besides from being the perfect female :-) does a wonderul job as the confused yet faithful Joan. The action sequences are just brilliant to watch and anyone who enjoys a good sword battle will love the numerous frays in this flick! A few things didn't fit properly with me though. The language bothered me a bit - not because they should have all been speaking French, but because it seemed that they were using some 90's slang. It's hard to tell though because the only knowledge of language back in the 15th century that I have is from other movies! There were a few (very few) scenes that dragged - but only because I think everyone knows how the story ends. All in all a fun adventure that may not have the depth of an epic but it does have the look of it. An 82%. Dogma is the highly anticipated follow up feature to Kevin Smith's insightful comedy, Chasing Amy (go rent it!) a couple of years ago. A lot of controversy has surrounded this film as it satirizes religion - though I found that it is more of a movie about making up your own mind. The lovable duo of Matt Damon and Ben Affleck team up again - and whenever they are on screen it is highly entertaining. Whenever our clueless and somewhat apathetic "hero", Linda Fiorentino is on the screen - it screeches to a halt. Linda was fine in Last Seduction but here she seems very out of place. Chris Rock plays Chris Rock - some laughs. Jay and Silent Bob, a staple of Kevin Smith, seem intrusive to our story. Most of the laughs come from them however so it is hard to ignore them. The best thing about this film is definitely the writing. Smith has written a witty and humourous script that will either insult people or fly over their heads. This was an entertaining movie but it was not the movie I was expecting from Kevin Smith. 77%.
