I was fairly close to slipping to 1.5/5 sometimes. I just didn't want to write another one of those so soon after I ripped "Me, Myself & Irene" to shreds just recently. ;-) This is a clear case of good actors in a bad film (for the most part, I don't think of Ryan Phillipe as a good actor, but Benicio Del Toro, James Caan, Juliette Lewis ?? Yes !!) The story is simple enough since this is only an excuse to have numerous meaningless gunfights (By the way the guns in this movie don't even "sound" real ... I noticed that ... compared to how the guns "sounded" in a movie like "Heat" for example .. in this film they "sounded" quite fake ...) How many times can you shoot a hand pistol ?? It seemed to me they were shooting them quite a high number of times without ever re-loading, or hardly ... but those are just details, if the story had been good I would have let those slide ! Juliette Lewis plays a lovely young woman (that's easy for her !) who is oh-so pregnant. She has been "hired" by a rich man and his wife to have their baby basically ... The couple will give them 1 million dollars for the baby (Why that much ?? You can place an ad in the newspaper and a woman would do it for 10,000$-15,000$ ??) probably ... or contact one of those fertility clinics ... DOH !! Of course nothing goes as planned and this is where Benicio Del Toro (What was he thinking !!??) and Ryan Phillipe come in as a couple of street thugs ... They proceed to kidnap the pregnant girl and ask the rich man for a ransom of ... 15 million dollars .. that's right ... 15 !!! :-) Oh my ! Who came up with that number ?? Wouldn't 1 or 2 millions be enough ?? I was laughing ! Then it's basically a cat-and-mouse chase, plenty of silly lines of dialogues, uninteresting situations ... I was reminded of "The getaway" sometimes with Kim Basinger and Alec Baldwin ... I would give the film a 1.5/5 but because I liked some of the stunts and action scenes, the last firefight too ... I have to be "generous" so it ends up at 2/5. Best line of dialogue by an old man near the end in a car ... talking to James Caan after being shot, he says "Ohhhhh ... I am about to diiiiiiiie ... ewwwwwwk !!" ... Yeah, right ... that was real believable, man !! GO HOME and play with your grand kids !! Caan was **almost** laughing too, cos' it looked so FAKE !! The only issue is that it would be mighty hard to find anywhere probably. The french title is "A la vie, a la mort !" which basically means "To live and die !" but that is not the actual english title ... I know there is a subtitled version out there but I couldn't find the title despite my efforts !! (Damn it !!) It's a really depressing film too .. reminded me of "Happiness" and "Cabaret Balkan" ... My rating is 4/5. It's a character development tale all the way. Simple story of a family in France. They are dirt poor, working at odd jobs left and right trying to make money to survive. The whole film is really intriguing but boy is it depressing ... We meet the different members of this family, they all live int he same house to save money. The father is in a wheelchair, the sons are working hard to make lil' money, one of the daughters is an aging nude dancer, one is a prostitute, another is suicidal ... They all have either Alcohol or drug problems too ... I liked it because I don't mind nasty and grim films but a lot of people wouldn't sit through it possibly. I read a couple of reviews and that was mentioned ! ;-) Good dialogues, acting ... it's a low budget film of course. Example of lines of dialogues in this film (freely translated from french !) Youngest son : "Dad, we'll have to widen the door of the bathroom, your wheelchair won't go through it ..." Father : "then, I just won't c**p anymore ..." Father : "Why don't you just kill me ??" Youngest Daughter : "Because it's against the law ..." Oldest Son : "Well at least I don't go see whores at night like YOU do ..." Youngest son : "You don't have to, your whore is at home, you married her ..." Get the picture ?? BUT, the story was completely unoriginal and the characterizations were too, although I thought that the characters' knowledges of what the other characters were up to... with the exception of an occasional aspect here and there to throw ya... was fairly interesting. I was only mildly intrigued by the acting, but maybe if the plot was more interesting, the movie would've been better. Desbiens" Subject: [MV] Taking off - 1971 *** minor spoilers *** <<<<< Alright, this movie is perfect for a famous lil' pot smoker out there ... Ms. Lisa from Oregon. >>>>>> It is directed by Gus Van Sant and is often hilarious. In fact even if it deals with a teenage girl who runs away from her home and how the parents worry and search for her, I would say this film is actually a comedy. I laughed out loud quite a few times actually. The film opens as the girl is auditioning for some sort of singing contest, we see all sorts of contestants perform in front of a panel of "judges" and even though this has really nothing to do with the actual story I enjoyed it. Great music, editing, sound ... At one point we see all sorts of teenage girls singing the same song, only the director cuts between all of them so we only hear one girl singing a line, then another, then another ... until the song is completed ... I was smiling the whole time !! This looked soooooo 1971 too, the hairstyles, the clothes ... great ! The problem is the girl who was there to audition is too nervous so when someone offers her some LSD she decides she wants to try it and see if it will calm her down a bit ... and it does ... But when she goes home her parents were worried sick because it is late at night and they had no idea where she was of course ... Screaming, discussions, etc. So the girl decides she has had enough and she leaves, she runs away ... This sounds like a tragedy but never did I feel the girl was in danger being on her own ... the movie focuses for the most part on the parents and how they deal with their daughter's disappearance, trying to find her, learning about drugs and that "lifestyle", understanding what she went through ... There is an HILARIOUS scene near the end where maybe 100 people are gathered in a room and then this weird "guru type" guy comes in and TEACHES all the parents there how to smoke a joint .. the techniques, the words ... Man, this was soooooo funny !! ... It was not done in a silly way either like they would do nowadays in those teen comedies for example, in that one it was a lot more effective ! Should they legalise marijuana ?? This film sure makes it sound "cool" to "pass a joint around the campfire" ... 3.5/5 Marc ;-) - ------------------------------------------------------- "It's hard digging a grave ... when the guy it's for is staring straight at you ... but I kept thinking ... this is it ... when he is gone ... all this will be over ..." One is so-so and one is a masterpiece, guess which one I think is "ace" ?? I mean .. come on !! I would give 2.5/5 to the original Rocky, it's mostly slow and uninteresting, especially for a boxing fan ... I have watched it a couple of times, maybe 3 ... I don't really know why but I never really "connect" with it ... it's really average, I keep thinking "I know I'll like it, this time ..." ... ;-) Rocky 5 had it's moments, but in the end it was basically Sly parodying (is that a word? The film is so "sappy-la-la" in parts ... that scene in the hospital where Stallone is all teary eyed ... phew ... predictable and formulaic, I remembered it being much better but I was maybe 6 years old the first time I saw it so maybe that's why I thought it was good ?? Now I think : 2/5 It's a shame, too, because as wonderful a piece of filmmaking the original ROCKY is, now all anyone thinks of is "Yo, Adrienne!" **** Rocky 3 was ok ... 3/5, that is the only one to which I give a positive rating actually, mainly because I was entertained. I liked how Mr. T was being a nast boy ... etc. Sure it's predictable and formulais as well, plus there is no way a man could take a pounding like that and be the winner, totally unbelievable, any normal man would have been down in less than a minute, making the movies more realistic would be betetr for me, especially since I am a boxing fan so those numerous knock out punches would have ended the fight swiftly, sometimes less is more. LOL I think Rocky 5 only added fuel to that fire. He should have stopped with 4, which I know some fans didn't like either, but I guess the patriotic side in me couldn't help but love it :) Josh **** Rocky 4, with the big russian was so-so as well ... plenty of glossy material, music montage ... the soundtrack is "ace" actually, I own it ! It's good, but only in the first half, when the movie moves to Russia I was thinking .. there we go again ... Plus can anyone endure the last speech after Stallone wins ?? You know when he talks to the spectators, I was rolling my eyes back so fast I got dizzy !! (Saw this film again about 6 months ago, I don't plan on seeing any of those films again except maybe Rocky 3 in a long long time.) I necer saw Rocky 5 cos' it looked terrible Basically. I agree that TAXI DRIVER is a better film than ROCKY, however I still think ROCKY is a very good film. It's not to be confused with the sequels, which are typical sports movies. Unlike 99% of sports movies out there, ROCKY isn't about winning, it's about "going the distance" and being the best you can be. Plus, the film is populated by a lot of interesting characters (all well-acted) and has a very sweet and realistic romantic sub-plot. A Special Edition DVD of the film is due in April, and I'll probably be picking it up. I barely give this film a 3/5 myself, had I only watched the last 70 minutes I would probably go down to 2.5/5 ... What a waste of a good actor' talent. I was just about to write you about this film, when I got you e-mail. What a shock! You actually liked this film. My God, man, where was your head at when you viewed it? **** lol !! Mmmmmm ... right on my shoulders as usual ! The film entertained me enough so that I was willing to give it a 3/5, this is a case of a movie that I am willing to be "forgiving" with because I like the story, the visuals, the special effects ... etc. I wasn't bored at any time, just thought it was going over-the-top near the end and had the movie lasted 20 minutes more I could have slipped down to 2.5/5 because it was clearly getting worse and worse as it was progressing. (Especially the last 15 minutes !) Sorry if I offended you Marc, but I was just so surprised that you thought this was a good film. It was as far from a good film as the moon is from the sun: in fact, maybe even farther. ***** Wow, strong statement there ! Well, you should see Cecil B. Demented & Me Myself & Irene, you would then think Hollow man is actually "Pretty good" ! ;-) Now, to the "Man With the Golden Arm". Yes indeed, for it's time, the "Man With Golden Arm" was an exceptional film. But you will find that among film historians and critics, it is still considered to be a damn good film. ***** Yes, I know I **should** like it more ! It was very watchable but I was annoyed by a few things ... the acting by the supporting characters for example ... that guy following Sinatra around like a puppy dog, he was making me cringe ... I wish he wouldn't have been there ! The story was only mildly interesting, I liked a few scenes here and there ... I think this is a movie that brings you back to "the good ol' days" possibly ?? That GENERATION GAP ... yes ... Not by any means perfect, for it wasn't perfect when it came out. Nevertheless, it is still a damn good film. Allen J. Duffis ****** It was ok, but nothing so special ... Sinatra was the highlight. Sorry for perplexing you ! Marc ;-) _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com.
