No part of the opposing forward player is allowed to rest inside the crease (unless they're being pushed into the crease by your defenceman). Now, on the lines...that usually falls to the discretion of the referee. Most times, they'll prolly say the player wasn't in the crease, but there are a few that would call this...I'm not sure if it works like the goal line, and the player has to be all the way over the line or not...but I know one foot in and one foot out counts as being in the crease. Just keep your eye on the puck, and using your periforal(sp?) vision, give him a chop... I am 5'5" and only 125 lbs, so I have found that gatorade works better for me - plain water does not let me regain my electrolyte levels and I feel weary much faster. I have heard mixed studies about which one is recommended, however. Last night, I had a game where the arena was quite warm. After a fair number of warm up shots, I was already boiling. I never did quite get my form down in that game, because my body was just too hot and tense. It is a regular occurrence for my body to steam after games, but this was plain awful. Is there any way for me to condition myself and protect myself against overheating like this? I often find that I play better without taking warm ups, because I retain my stamina longer. Most players I meet do not warm up goalies properly in any case - they are constantly aiming for the top corner, etc., whereas all I really want is shots more on me so I can get a feel for the puck. It is regularly 85 degrees F in the gym that we play in (very often in the upper 90's) and I find that water is the only thing I can handle, though every body is different. At any rate, this past weekend I played on ice for the first time in nearly a year. I was somewhat suprised to find myself with plenty of energy throughout the entire game - whereas in the past I've often begun to feel tired during the third period. Anything aerobic will help with stamina - as will some light weight training. Flexible and well stretched muscles also perform more efficiently (I hear the words "Doctor, heal thyself" in the back of my head on this one). One note about gatorade. Sugar is very often a dehydrator when taken in quantities found in most 12 oz. or larger Gatorade bottles. It does indeed provide you with needed electrolytes, but you may find that you have to suck down more and more as time goes on - as the sugar takes its effect. Well...I'm 5'6.5", and 120 lbs, and I believe firmly in water...Gatorade is good...but you can't just drench yourself with it (I hope I'm not the only one who does this). About conditioning yourself to the heat...the only way to do that is to get into shape (from my experiences). Last year when I did Cross Country for UVM, I could play for hours on end, and never really reach the "boiling point"....the other night when I played (the first time after my knee-surgery) I hit the "boiling point" after a few warm-up shots...I also got extremely tired...extremely quick...Hence, I realized that I was outta shape...so now I'm running as soon as the doc. says its ok. Date: 02 Oct 1996 10:50:18 -0500 I don't usually comment...but here goes. I've played roller hockey for about 2 years now...in the deep South (Birmingham) often in a rink that 90+ at game time. Your best bet is WATER!!! I usually drink a small 12 ounce bottle on the way to the game. And then have a large bottle that I carry with me. In my case, I don't have any refridgeration at the rink, so I freeze the bottle solid the night before and then let it thaw out as the game goes on. This way I get plenty of water and it's cold! The other big tip is COMPRESSION SHORTS! I don't really know how I ever played without them. One of our ECHL goalies here told me about them a few weeks ago, and I've played eight games with them since...lots more energy now in the third period. The support that it gives to your back and thigh muscles means less work for them, so more energy for you. As far as training goes, I limit myself to lots of ab muscle work. It's the power center for your entire body and it will really help. Sit ups!!!! And lastly, warm ups...anyone who plays in a recreational league can bitch about this one. My current team does a good job, because I had a long talk with the team captain to tell him what I wanted. And he enforces it. My warmups now go something like this...I skate and strech while the guys shoot and pass. When I'm ready, I stand beside the net and raise my stick until I get the captains attention... he then tells everyone to begin warming me up. Slapshots from 20-30 feet away to start, then gradually tougher shots. Usually about 10 minutes and then I skate away and let them continue to shoot/pass, etc. Remember, it's their warm up too. Leave some time for them to practice those corner shots... and if you're having problems, talk to the captain first. Granted, even that won't always work but it's more productive than yelling at individual players and feeling frustrated. Les Rayburn, #27 (Graduate, Ron Hextall School of Goaltending. I usually try to have pasta or rice before a game, but others have also told me that it's not good to eat that because it sits in your stomach, and that they prefer steak or something along that line. I don't understand that either, because meat takes a lot longer to digest. I will probably stick to pasta though. OK, we talked about psyching up for a game and stretching, but what do you like to do to warm up with your team? Personally, I like to have a lot of low, long slapshots first (i.e. 30 ft). The more of these the better, as far as I'm concerned. I can work on angles and practice kicking my legs out, which is good for warming those muscles up, too. Then I like the shooters to move in a bit--come to about 15 feet away or so, but still take shots without skating. This is even better for angles and tends to get my reflexes up. Finally, I want a few breakaways, but not too many at all. Three would be just fine for me (although my team usually tries to do two or three each!). Usually, I don't get enough long and low shots for my liking, no matter how often I ask for them. Sometimes I even just ignore skaters coming in on breakaways (of course, I try to make it look like I was concentrating elsewhere). Anyway, what do you guys like to do to warm up? The pre-game warmup that I like is very simple and straightforward. After doing my stretching, I take slap shots from the blueline...first going from left to right, then right to left, then alternating...one left, one right, one left...etc...and have the team go through this twice...then I'll skate out and stretch some more, while my team can shoot corners or whatever. Then I'll go back in the net, and they'll run a horseshoe from the corners...each shot alternates glove side, blocker side...the idea I try to get across is that before the game, I'm trying to get used to the puck, so they should be trying to hit me, not pick corners...I never take deking breakaways during warmups...they'll eat your energy real quick, especially with your whole team doing it... Practice is a different story...:) Steve ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Barry Russell Subject: temporary exit Date: 02 Oct 1996 18:17 EST Could someone please tell me how to temporarily get off this list? I buy the powder, so I dilute the concentration a bit more than the drinks. This hopefully helps the sugar to not have as much a potent effect. I have found that when I drink just water, that my level of awareness and mental ability to concentrate just goes down. I have tried to keep in mind also that everyone's body is different, and some people sweat more than others. I realize that playing in the south must be difficult, but I would imagine that the rinks there are newer, and the cooling system is thus better. Yesterday it was very warm in Toronto for October, and the rink I played at is pretty ancient (Varsity Arena), the ice was soft - there is also hot lighting (not the cooler fluorescent lighting in most rinks), and I was just plain hot before I even stepped on the ice (the dressing rooms were pretty hot too!) Most times after I play (even on hot summer days, the better rinks have good refrigeration systems), I might steam but I do not overheat so that I cannot concentrate. Yesterday was just plain crazy. Does your ability to regulate body temperature also significantly improve as you increase your level of fitness? When someone talks about light weight training - what exactly does this entail? I am doing 3 sets of 12 reps for upper body exercises for the most part, though I find the last set to be quite a challenge. I don't find it takes me many shots to really get me focused and ready. Sometimes I have played my best games without any warmup shots at all - I have had to get used to this because I have had too many teammates gunning for top corners and hitting the end boards way wide instead. I usually skate a few laps to get the blood flowing, then I stop off to the side, and stretch my hamstring and groin areas. I like then like to try a few stack pad movements, and then scrape the crease before taking warmups. I find that my game being on or off totally depends on my skating. When I play well, I feel comfortable in my stance, and I can get across well on my skates. On days that I'm tired, my skating is off and I do not cut down angles properly, etc., nor get across fast enough and end up out of position. My current team are pretty good about this - we all skate around and stretch, and then while the other players do a bit of forward and backward skating, a good shooter takes a box of pucks, and shoots in specific places, low-glove, high-stick etc for both goalies, and only then do we go into the shots from the Blue Line, one-on-one etc etc. Of course that may be because they realise that shots from the blue line don't test us enough as only 50% or so are on target... and some guys are obsessed with a "kill the goalie" mentality. When you exercise, you body produces insulin which increases the amount of blood sugar that goes into your muscles, giving you more avaliable energy. Also, when you eat sugars, your body produces insulin to lower the sudden increase of sugars in your blood stream. So, when you have a lot of sugar in your body, you produce insulin, and get a "rush." Then, when you add exercise on top of that, your body creates more insulin, and you get an even bigger rush as more sugar goes into your muscles. However, you now have almost completely defeated the reserves of sugar and you will "crash" heavily after only a short while. There will be a lot of insulin in your blood but no sugar. After high demand from people we are going to release a "ENTRY LEVEL" goal pad for ICE and INLINE hockey. This goal pad will be sold at around the $350.00 US price or $470.00 CANADIAN, and will be intended for the goalie who likes to play 2 times a week and doesnt want to spend alot of money on his or her gear, but at the same, they will still be top level quality and offer superior looks and workmanship than many of the other BUDGET priced goal pads on the market. This pad will be manufactured from CORDURA NYLON, and the new and improved JENRINO (synthetic leather) that has been changed, and we feel will have a great application for our entry level pads, but we will still continue to use ONLY CLARINO products on our BPG series of products. This product will still carry the BATTRAM LIFETIME WARRANTY, and will be made to high levels that people have come to expect from us, and still offer the superior protection. We have eliminated some features such as the outside cheater roll, and inside 5 hole rolls, and made the pad "uni-body" to eliminate stuffing individual pockets with foam, in order to cut down the manufacture time. We will be doing a proto-type pad on Monday and I will get some pictures taken, and get them up on the website ASAP. Other than that, this pad will be a perfect buy for the rec goalie, or the goalie who wants some decent equipment but cannot afford to pay 1000 bucks or so for a top level pad. Also for inline goalies, this pad will be another alternatative to our PRO-INLINE PAD! Thanks Again, If you have any questions, please feel free to ask! If your getting really hot while playing... possibly your not wearing the proper stuff under your equipment to cool yourself... I have never had poblems with being so hot as I could not play... and I think alot of goaltenders wear the following under their gear. LONG UNDERWEAR and SWEATPANTS and a heavy sweater then another heavy hockey JERSEY. I have never worn long underwear, nor have I ever worn sweatpants under the gear... but always just short underwear or briefs, and then regular hockey socks, Many goalies I see playing are using the two layers of long underwear and also sweatpants or socks... I beleive what is actually happening is as they sweat, the moisture soaks the long underwear, and then as a result, actually is insulating your body, due to the fact it cannot evapourate as it is trapped in the first layer... Likewise with using a couple layers of clothing on top... And generally these are the goalies who when the game is over are sweating like they have just ran a marathon but never did any training to prepare for it... (as most world class runners are so well conditioned they are not sweating alot as they finish). It is important to keep your body warm but not too hot and not too cold... if your playing and getting alot of work... usually one layer will do... let the moisture escape... you will be amazed that your body and muscles stay warm, yet you dont feel super hot. I beleive the term may be homeostasis or something like that. As for goalies playing roller hockey, this is a whole different problem! Also, if you eat before games, your body has to metabolize the food, therefor will create heat as a by-product of the digestive system... just fill up someday to the point where you cannot eat anymore and feel how hot you get as the food digests! Prehaps this is whats happening with the powdered gatorade... When I play I never have a water bottle on the net... and will only go for water during the end change in games, as for practrice... I can play for 3 hours in a row and not need any water...or if I do... I just rinse the mouth and spit it out... notice the pros do this alot to... you see them drink but then spit it out... if you drink to much you will always feel full. As for your question on body temp and fitness... yes I do believe the better conditioned you are the less heated you will become while exercising... Because with fitness increasing, you also increase your metabolic rate, therefor you are burning more calories or energy over a greater period of time, rather than just while you are working out, which also causes an increase in body temp. >When someone talks about light weight training - what exactly does this >entail? I would maybe drink one or two glasses a day if I was lucky, and someone here suggested I drink the recommended 8. So, I have been drinking water like crazy, and my stamina has improved significantly. I also find that I don't like many warm up shots. Four or five good shots do me just fine. What I find helps me more is to skate around and get my feet moving, because my game is made or broken based on how well I skate on a given day. There have been many times where I have let guy take a lot of warm ups, and then I am a bit tired when the game starts. As for clothing - I wear a t-shirt under my chest protector, and sweatpants under my hockey shorts. I wear normal underwear, and do not wear socks, so I do not think I am overdressing for the part. I've fallen in love with the Heaton Helite III (Costs =A3285 over here!!! that's 570 Canadian dollars!!!). I'm sure a lot of people on this list know a lot about it and so your advice would be really appreciated. I generally trust Heaton stuff, especially after getting by excellent 90Z stick, would I be right in saying this catcher is good? I really do like a good sized net in my catchers but don't like them heavy or bulky. Also, what is the Helite III like compared to the 90Z Catcher? I think you can get the senior one in medium or large. My hand span is around 8.5 inches and I really don't know what size to get. I'd prefer the medium, as long as the pocket is still a good size. The other main one I was looking at was the Brians Sniper. Any comments on this one, or a comparison? What would you say is the best catcher on the market at around the same price as the Helite III? Scott, I'd love Battram stuff but there's no way I can get it shipped over cheaply! After we won the Final this year I was invited to try out for the State team. This year Victoria (my state) is sending two teams to the Nationals. One team is the Victorian team, which is basically the veterans - the same guys year after year. The second team, the Melbourne team (Melbourne is the capital city of Victoria) is basically the players that are expected to play in the Victorian team over the next few years. We are being sent up purely for experience, and are expected to get CREAMED :) I was given the choice of starting for Melbourne or playing back-up for Victoria. I figured I have more chance to impress playing for the weaker team, and I am expecting to see 80 shots per game. I have heard rumors that Roller Hockey will be an Olympic sport in 2000, and I will be 29 ..... perfect age for a goaltender :) I am really interested to hear what other people do for conditioning. I do 100 butterflies in the morning and at night, stretch for about half an hour a night, and do a light gym routine 4 times a week, plus countless hours of mental training...going through saves in my head. I was wondering what sort of goalie specific routines people have. Anyway, I will give a full report after I return. This sounds something like a goalie who may hold his stick in his right hand and also shoots right handed, therefor, he wants to use a curved stick, so while holding his stick in his right hand, it curves toward his skates... when I work with young goalies like this, I would rather see them learn to shoot lefthanded and use a left curve, for the simple reason, it saves time when clearing the puck, because they dont have to flip their stick over. Better yet, use a stick with no curve, and flip it. =20 I always say, "learn to shoot correctly with a straight stick, then get the curve..." In this situation if the goalie cannot shoot left, I think he or she would be better off with the straight stick to eliminate the chance of directing one into your own net. >=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D= =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D > Blake Wehlage > =87=B1=BB R=EBV=F0L=FB=86=A1=D8=D1 B=F8+ =A9=D6mP@=F1=A5 =99 =AB=B1=87 > Goto: http://members.iglou.com/jwilk > *********PGP KEY On Request********* > > > Scott Battram "Owner - BATTRAM CUSTOM GOAL EQUIPMENT" Woodstock, Ontario - CANADA "Manufacturers of Custom Goal Equipment" ***BATTRAM CUSTOM GOAL EQUIPMENT WEB SITE:*** http://venus.execulink.com/~sbattram/index.htm End of hockey-goalie Digest V96 Issue #2 **************************************** ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: hockey-goalie-request@xmission.com Subject: hockey-goalie Digest V96 #3 Date: 17 Oct 1996 17:11:49 -0600 (MDT) Content-Type: text/plain hockey-goalie Digest Volume 96 : Issue 3 Today's Topics: goalies and beards [ Mike Foster ] testing..1..2..3 [ Tigger ] DR magnum pads [ "Michael Robinson (BIO)" Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" At 11:23 AM 10/13/96 -0600, you wrote: >I was curious if anyone else out there has the same problem: >I recently grew a beard and now after every game, it stinks like >the inside of my catch glove (munge growing in the chin cup). The only thing I can think of is that the left curve helps him with the occasional left shot he takes, which he is weaker at and therefore can use the help of the curve. I too am in the same position, and use a right curved stick. The problem I have noticed though is that when I redirect shots to the corner, it is more difficult to lift the puck when the curve is convex facing the puck (as when you use a right curve). This might be why he is using a left curve. He might also be doing so to compensate for his left handed shots. My daughter & I had just finished a salad at Neiman-Marcus Cafe in Dallas & decided to have a small dessert. Because both of us are such cookie lovers, we decided to try the "Neiman-Marcus Cookie". {EDITORIAL COMMENT: Neiman's is a VERY EXPENSIVE department store in the States}. It was so excellent that I asked if they would give me the recipe and the waitress said with a small frown, "I'm afraid not." Well, I said, would you let me buy the recipe? With a cute smile, she said, "Yes." I asked how much, and she responded, "Only two fifty, it's a great deal!" I said with approval, just add it to my tab. Thirty days later, I received my VISA statement from Neiman-Marcus and it was $285..00. I looked again and I remembered I had only spent $9.95 for two salads and about $20.00 for a scarf. As I glanced at the bottom of the statement, it said, "Cookie Recipe - $250.00." That's outrageous!! I called Neiman's Accounting Dept. and told them the waitress said it was "two-fifty," which clearly does not mean "two hundred and fifty dollars" by any *POSSIBLE* interpretation of the phrase. Nieman-Marcus refused to budge. They would not refund my money, because according to= them, "What the waitress told you is not our problem. You have already seen the recipe - we absolutely will not refund your money at this point." I was basically told, "Do what you want, we don't give a crap, and we're not refunding your money." I waited, thinking of how I could get even, or even try and get any of my money back. I just said, "Okay, you folks got my $250, and now I'm going to have $250.00 worth of fun." I told her that I was going to see to it that every cookie lover in the United States with an e-mail account has a $250.00 cookie= recipe from Neiman-Marcus... for free. My finger feels likes its broken so I think the protection is not what I need as a novice. I am currently looking at Battram/Vaughn catch/blocker combos. I am interested in positive/negative feedback about both. It would be great if you have some experience with both. David PS: I have the Battram upper body unit and love it. My friends no longer ask if my wife beats me because I make sure to always wear my Battram UB unit when she's in a bad mood. Nothing like multi-purpose equipment! You may remember a while back (2 years or so) I posted a message asking how I could handle the pressure of trying to impress this girl who was coming to a game... well, I got over the problem, and in just over two weeks we will be married :) As we are both hockey nuts - we are doing a hockey tour for our honeymoon, and are meeting up with a few people we've typed to on the way. As most, perhaps all of you have noticed, there is now a digest version of hockey-goalie, and we're all on it. I have no idea why we all got switched over, but I'm trying to get it sorted out. SO hang tight, and I will eventually get everyone back to the "immediate" list, and then let you know how to get on the digest, if that's what you prefer. Somebody would have to be real A-R to ask the refs of a recreational league to measure goalie pads, gloves, etc. (most trappers I see on the market appear to be illeagal, for example) -Mike Foster Lord Wolfger Silberbaer mfoster1@voyager.net GKMIT for the mythical Shire of Altenberg Ask me about part-time chronicler self-employment opportunities Message-id: <01IB64VZWG948Y517W@vaxc.cc.monash.edu.au> Content-type: TEXT/PLAIN; CHARSET=US-ASCII Content-transfer-encoding: 7BIT Hi All, Well, I am back from the National Championships for inline (roller) hockey. Just to fill you in, my state sent up 2 teams, the Victorian team and a second Melbourne team. We (the Melbourne team) were sent to get experience, as we will be in the state team in the near future. Basically we were sent to get shelled, and were expected to come last. Anyway, we get up there, and the nets are HUGE.....about 6 1/2' wide and 5' high. The temperature is about 30 C (85 F) and humid.....great weather for hockey ;) First game...I started, and got a SHUTOUT :) We won 7-0. Next game we also won 5-3. So far so good...48 shots for 3 goals. I started the next game against one of the stronger teams, and conceded 8 goals in the first two periods. The put the back up in for the third period, but we still got creamed, and lost 17-0. The reason the score is so high is that with 3 mins to go, we pulled the goalie to try to break the shutout. This was a good move by the coach, because it stopped us getting too down, and made the last few minutes fun. Next came out two toughest games. First we played the Victorian team. This was the team we wanted to play well against, to earn respect. I left after 2 periods with severe heat exhaustion, when the score was 8-5. We ended up losing 13-5, but we were ecstatic with this loss. We scored 5 goals against the top team in Australia :) Next was NSW. I sat out this game, and my backup did a fantastic job, and we lost 5-0. NSW went on to win the tournament. We did enough to reach the final 4, and made the semi finals. We played Victoria again, and lost 9-4, another great game for us. I robbed a couple of players on breakaways, which was great for me. So we made the consolation final, and came up against Queensland again (the team the whipped us 17-0). I was suffering from heat exhaustion again. Hlaf way through the second period, one of their guys kept backing into me and screening me. I put my stick against the back of his skates and kicked, and he fell over. I heard a whistle, then the call "35 Blue...MATCH PENALTY for kicking"...ooops. After much discussion it was commuted to two minutes for tripping :) I came out soon after that anyway, down 5-2, and we ended up losing 11-2 Anyway, we finished fourth, which was better than anyone expected, so we were happy. Apart from the one game that got away from us, we were even proud of the games we lost, and earned a lot of respect from the other teams and coaches. Better finish here.....sorry for the long post. Adam P.S. Played my first game of ice hockey last night. Conceded a goal 6 seconds into the game, but then shut them out for a 5-1 victory. Ice is so much FUN :) Message-ID: <961028204923_1913427551@emout10.mail.aol.com> Hi all, My 12 year old goalie son had two games this weekend, and in each he allowed 3 goals in the 1st period. In both games the 1st shot he faced went in. Not a big deal. But in both games, he proceeded to shut the teams out for the remainder of the games. So, how do I get him to play the 1st period with the same kind of intensity as he does the 2nd & 3rd?
