Because I'm not dissing story driven RPGs. All Square RPGs are story driven. But Final Fantasy 8 had neither a good story, nor enough gameplay elements to be called an RPG. The latter is what i'm really critical of. The one button RPG. The game simply got really bogged down towards the middle and there's reams of useless chatter, and the game forces you to backtrack through large swaths of land, and you're being attacked troughout with no control over avoiding battles. and on top of that, you have to wait close to 3 seconds for each screen to load. And that's for every screen you enter, with a few exceptions where 2 screens would be loaded into ram simultaneously. Somewhere in disc 2, I realized that I'm just pressing one button the majority of the time and that stuck with me. When others began voicing similar opinions, That's what it struck me that what I've been wanting to say isn't at all out of line. - -- Dexter S. Maybe there are some better ones like > Chrono Cross or whatever. > End of discussion. Well, the whole point actually is that Final Fantasy 8 doesn't have enough interactivity. I agree with you about games throwing you into this game and let you do anything you want. it loses its focus and too much interactivity is not good. But that's beside the point. The criticsm I have is it doesn't have enough gameplay elements and you're just being pushed from one melodramatic event to another with FMVs in between. > As for the FF movie, my point is that it is a project that the Final Fantasy game team, aside from Sakaguchi has very little control of, creatively. So the movie itself isn't a reflection of the game(s) or the series. And as you can see from the trailer, its a completely different story, and theme. It actually looks closer to Sega's Sci-Fi RPG, Phantasy Star, than Final Fantasy. > > Don't get me wrong. I don't think that games without FMV aren't > worth playing. Good. But the problem is that Ramancing Saga3 isn't exactly the best Square franchise, not is it very popular. > > Is Legend of Mana any good? I've played the last version > on the SNES and I didn't like it so much because of too less story. The SNES version is called Legend of Mana. Densetsu, is japanese for Legend. The translators simply decided to call it Final Fantasy Adventure to avoid any confusion with Legend of Zelda when it was released for GameBoy. The sequel, Secret of Mana, was actually Seiken no Densetsu 2, and a third installment, Seiken no Densetsu 3, using SNES' high res capabilities was released in Japan, but not here. You can find emulator rom of the game, fully patched with english text. After that, things pretty much went downhill. Square released a fourth installment and in the spirit of erasing its old ties with Nintendo, decided to call the game, Seiken no Densetsu again... which was translated to Legend of Mana stateside. The game has enjoyed mild critical success, but most people agree that the game's sidequest/episodic nature hurt its coherance. Most of the key team members has since left Square for their own company. Word on the street is that Square is pretty much just focusing on its primier games, mainly Final Fantasy, and many of its other franchises, including Chrono Cross/Trigger, were left alone for their respective teams to control. I was leafing through the November issue of Scientific American and I read an article on Toy Story 2 and advances in computer animation. In the article we learn that most in the industry believe 80 million polygons is where "Reality" begins. X-Box and the next generation of consoles(the one after this one) will likely have consoles that can pump 80 million polys/sec w/ effects TURNED ON(don't be fooled by PS2's 75 mil poly's). I was excited until I realized that you have to take into account the 30 frames of a television and that the figure was PER frame. *sigh* So.....reality begins at 2.4 billion polygons/sec. Also: The claims of Toy Story graphics will have to wait until a future generation as the original TS was 2-19 mil poly/sec. Which, if you mult by 30 TV frames/second, gives you a figure of 60-570 million poly/sec. Toy Story graphics quality --> 60-570 million poly/sec Toy Story 2 graphics(about double) --> 120-1,170 million poly/sec. Toy Story 1 graphics should be possible with the coming of the next generation! I started my day by following the Luigi look-alike Gormon (He looks exactly like the evil Ingo from Ocarina). From there, he led me to the mayor's house which led to a new mission for me. The mayor's wife is looking for their missing son, and now I'm supposed to meet the inn keeper at 11:30 pm to talk to her about his whereabouts. I'm promised some information. What struck me as really cool is how beautifully the Majora team integrates this living world into the game. It's not just following people around, but actually watching them live this world. There's very trickery used. By that, i mean, the game doesn't force events by fading to black and move characters that way. I can physically follow them as they move from spot to spot. The notebook can store 20 characters, so that means there's 20 characters that are of primary importance in the game. Not as much as I hoped, but having only followed Gormon's day for the first 12 hours, I'm having a blast as it is. There's a lot to do, so I'll get going. One thing I think is already pretty obvious, Zelda will never be the same again. - -- Dexter S.
