I thought the same way...but after seeing so many glowing reviews from virtually every gaming site on the net...I decided to go ahead and give it a shot...normally I likely would not have, but since it was a brand new system, I decided to go ahead and get it. My roommate (Skurge) made fun of me for buying it (saying the same things as you)...but after playing mine a few times. SSX was the first game he got when his PS2 arrived. What makes it great? Using the default set-up, the D-pad and left analog stick do the same things except you have better control with the analog (of course)...when you hold the jump button (X), you can no longer steer and holding either the D-pad or Left Analog stick can pre-wind the direction you intend to spin (when you jump). If you switch to the Pro set-up, the Left Analog steers whether you are holding the jump button or not and the D-pad is what you use to pre-wind. I'd have to say for me that it ranks above all other games on the 64 past present and future. I'm seriously having more fun playing this game than I did when I played Mario 64, Zelda 64, Banjo K, Goldeneye or SSB etc etc etc... The game is just damn good and damn balanced. It reminds me of the old SNES gaming with the graphics and the music and on top of that I'm hooked. Games RARELY hook me and make me spend hours after hours on it but this one is and I can say I'm very impressed. The story is good too with cutscenes to move it along and the fact that you have to research previous areas to 'persuade' neutral characters to join your army (which is totally customized in an infinite number of possiblities that you choose) and get rare items during different times of the day, month and even YEAR!! I'll admit the game is a b$tch for the first 3 hours of gameplay because it is so complex but once you learn all the menus and extras, it comes just as natural as navigating the old Final Fantasy menus. If you've ever played an RPG and liked the idea of having many characters under your control, then OB64 is definately worth a rent, heck, I suggest everyone buys it it's GOLD! Well anyway, back to the game for me, I'm still trying to find out how the heck I can get a Dragoon (I'm not using strategy guides until I play the game over).
