The problem with no being able to upload is of course the fact that you're restricting use. So you're telling Tim he can download all the patches he wants but he can't upload his stats? If you're going to implement a system that disallow uploads, it's going to be a lot more complicated to then turn around and allow "some limited uploads" It's like the proverbial rule. Block the road from all traffic, or allow some traffic and risk the terrorist getting through. I think this raises interesting problems. > > > Anyway, I never claimed any such system was fully proven...only that I don't > think it is nearly as hard to implement successfully as you seem to be > implying. > The fact that the system is unproven means the rest of the business model is difficult to build. If I'm X company developing a model, I'm now basing all my business assumptions based on an encryption technology that is essentially unproven. We don't even want to factor in a whole new can of worms, which is the consumer's willingness to pay. Looking from the dire straits of PC gaming, I am not too hopeful that people will be willing to pay for what is essentially non physical data that you download. Here in lies another paradox. A lot of you subscribe to the idea that napster increase CD sales. I have my doubts as the youth population is bigger now than ever, and I suspect booming CD sales has more to do with more people in the market, than napster users wanting to purchase CDs. But lets assume that is true, and the napster does in fact encourage users to get more CDs. That still doesn't automatically carry over to a business model based on exchanging money for bits of data. People value physical goods more than they do intangible goods, and it may well be a hard sell for distributors of these types of downloads to actually get people to buy them. - -- Dexter S. That's easy...you just have it set up where only save files could be uploaded...or something similar (maybe a size restriction)...that would be easy to work around. > We don't even want to factor in a whole new can of worms, which is the > consumer's willingness to pay. Looking from the dire straits of PC gaming, I am > not too hopeful that people will be willing to pay for what is essentially non > physical data that you download. No...I think you are completely wrong about the PC industry being in trouble because of piracy. It has played a role, but I don't think to the extent you think. Not that many people right now actually download PC games off of the internet....only people with broadband connections would even attempt it...even then they are usually hacked up and have all the cut scenes and such cut out. I still think thelast of genres and innovation is what has really hurt the PC industry. Even so...there really has not been to many serious attempts to stop the piracy in the PC industry until recently. PCs are hard to control in the first place since they are such an open platform andsince you have to have the ability to copy other programs like operating systems and business softare to your hardrive...that it is hard to prevent peole from copying other things like pirated games and software. PCs have to be very open to be able to do all kinds of tasks. Though there has been quite a bit of success in keeping people with pirated copies of games from playing online recently (for example the CD Key in Q3A is very hard to get around). But console do not have be anywhere near as open a platform and would be far and aways easier to keep control of. > Here in lies another paradox. A lot of you subscribe to the idea that napster > increase CD sales. I have my doubts as the youth population is bigger now than > ever, and I suspect booming CD sales has more to do with more people in the > market, than napster users wanting to purchase CDs. No way...there are more people, sure, but it did not suddenly explode at the same time Napster did. Napster exploded on the scene all at once, you would have expected to see at least a slowing of growth in CD sales...but that never occured. Sounds a lot like the people who are anti-Canadian.  I've been to Canada and
had the time of my life.  Then, one time in my Social Studies class, I hear a
few people say "I hate Canadians."  Big shock to me.  What's wrong with other
countries?  I really am taken aback when I hear people say the US is the
number one country in the world.  Hey, it's a terrific place, but why is it
so much better?  I will be going to München (Munich, Germany) this summer,
and, quite frankly, I can't wait.  Hey, if my college has an affordable study
abroad program, maybe I'll go to Japan sometime.  Anyway, don't look down on
any country until you've seen it for yourself.  You might be surprised.
-Eric-
