Well, Pokemon, IMO, is a pretty sound RPG in itself.  The big thing against
it that many don't like is all of the merchandise and hype that has come into
being.  I haven't played very much of it, so I can't give you much on
gameplay itself.

I find that as a good rule of thumb, those who ridicule others about a specific issue, usually ridicule out of fear, and most likely fear of themselves...they probably are like that deep inside.  If you're truly indiffierent to something and could care less about it, there is no point wasting your valuable time making fun of it.
