All we see happening is the convergence of the internet and various appliances, not the appliance themselves. Not to mention things like Tivo, which is really just a smart VCR look to the the type of appliance that will be dominating the field in the future. The problem with a convergence box is that is forced to do many things and inevitably, someone's going to come up with something that does one of those things better and at a very competitive cost and history tells us consumers would rather have multiple good boxes than 1 mediocre box. Principle of maximization applies. consumer behavior is difficult to predict and at all a science, we can only go with what they've done in the past and that is really to soundly reject convergence appliances. I have my reservations about Sony's foray into computer field by making the PS2 an internet appliance for the living room. The modem and the hard drive is sold separately. As for the Xbox, it's a stripped down PC for the living room. The way I see it, its not so much a convergence appliance of the future but another Attempt by Microsoft to grab a peice of the action., Microsoft has seen its attempt to rout Console gaming with Windows 95 stagnate.
