If SEGA wasn't in debt at the time, I'm willing to bet that I'd still be @SEGA.net, the Dreamcast would be $99 to $129 (bundles: Sonic, SEGA Sports), and I'd have Shenmue 2, Headhunter, and Rez on the Dreamcast, and I wouldn't have an XBOX. All SEGA needs is one killer app, one big thing to put them back on the radar. Nintendo has Pokemon, and love it or hate it, it's their cash cow. The N64 would be ancient history if not for the money Nintendo makes of Pokemon, and the Gamecube would be looked at as Nintendo's Dreamcast, the system that would remake or break Nintendo, after the past failures of the Virtual Boy and Nintendo 64, if they didn't have Pokemon. I'm also sure that the Game Boy would not be where it is today. Sony has what everybody would love to have, hype. And with hype brings the developers. They also have Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest, which doesn't hurt in Japan. Microsoft, well, it's too early to see if they have what it takes to compete. Sure somebody will probably say they got Halo and that's proof enough, but then again the Dreamcast had Soul Calibur, and an impressive launch game doesn't always mean sucess in the long run. Where am I going with this? I don't know. Oh yeah, SEGA needs something revolutionary, something that breaks an new paradigm. (did I use that word correctly?) But SEGA does have a huge Achillies Heel; they're, at their purest, an arcade game company, and they have to get past that to some extent. Perhaps when Nintendo gamers get the chance to play Phantasy Star Online online for the first time, that will put their feet in the right direction, I dunno. I have a toothache. ===== ** Dave ** super_trey_bros@yahoo.com AIM: Sanrio Velocity __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Send FREE Valentine eCards with Yahoo! I dunno, games like the JSR series seem to be a nice blend of arcade action and a more involving, deeper game. I really hope they crush EA.

Many additional hardware in the times of the Genesis/Megadrive like Mega-CD or 32X didn't achieve the necessary success. Saturn followed the same line. DC was IMO the best after the Genesis, but at least in Europe there were some bad points about it. At first there some online problems. Only 33.6 K was possible, the internet provider was prescribed ( not very cheap), low resoultion, a very uncomfortably browser and at the beginning the lack of keyboards. The very best at last: Sega's commercials had this great slogan "6 Billions Gamers". European gamers could only play in Europe. What a farce. - I dont know about the US. (All in all the print ads were IMO very good - only weird, that there weren't any screenshots of the games, but this is nowadays the same with the advertisment of Microsoft. I guess because it's the same marketing company who designs the ads ) Having to add, that I've never played online on the DC (not even yet with my PC), I don't deny it was a very good feature. Maybe I should have played Phantasy Star Online :( But anyway, with online costs about €1-2 a hour, I wouldn't have played it a very long time. I already have internet costs - without online playing - of about €40-€50 a month. And this with a cheap provider where I have to pay just about 0,5 € a hour. I guess it was the last month when Dreamkey 3.0 was released giving you the possibilty to choose your own provider. Yeah, finally :( Ok, to make it short DC had many damn good games, but Sega followed a wrong marketing way, didn't get online gaming going as predicted, did too many debts with games like Shenmue and the support wasn't that good, too. _Michael_ [ To quit the NGamers mailing list, send the message "unsubscribe ] [ NGamers" (without the quotes) to majordomo@xmission.com ] ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 14 Feb 2002 13:08:37 -0800 (PST) From: Trey Table Subject: Re: [NG] SEGA - --- Michael wrote: > > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "Eric C" > To: > Sent: Thursday, February 14, 2002 4:31 PM > Subject: Re: [NG] SEGA > > > > >From: "Michael" > > >Reply-To: NGamers@lists.xmission.com > > >To: > > >Subject: Re: [NG] SFA > > >Date: Thu, 14 Feb 2002 11:00:42 +0100 > > > > > > > > >But Sega made so many mistakes with their > hardware in the last decade > > > that I would be very careful. > > > > > >_Michael_ > > > > > I don't think they made a mistake with the DC. Here in America the only downside was the low res browser. But if I'm online with my Dreamcast and not playing a game, it's usually to download saves from Booyaka.com or Falcon's VMU World. But online gaming on the Dreamcast in America kicks arse. It was wonderful, especially Phantasy Star Online, until the cheaters made it miserable around August, but I hear there's no problems with cheaters (as compared to PSO) in Version 2. I may have to buy that someday soon. But before that, back in early 2001 PSO was the best online. Even better it was playing on a team with Stryder, Aldo, and some other people I know though lists or in real life. Oh, did you know that to play NFL2K1 online without lag you only need a 33.6K (roughly) connection, did ya know that? I mean how sweet is that? Sony & Microsoft go on and on about how you need broadband to play games online when SEGA didn't even need the full 53.3K power of its modem. ===== ** Dave ** super_trey_bros@yahoo.com AIM: Sanrio Velocity __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
