All of the capabilities of a computer in at $300 set-top box that I can use on my big-screen TV in my living-room. And the N64 would make a great we browser with the 64DD. With @30MB of writable storage, the 8MB's of RAM that the N64/64DD has and the 4 controller ports make it ideal. Remember - WebTV only has 2MB of RAM, and no disk drive. And it is very nice. Think of the possibilities on the N64/64DD. And - it does not have to be done by Nintendo. ANY company could make a web browser/internet client for the N64. But honestly, these things are the future. I am a developer and many corporations are seriously moving away from "computers" because of their high cost and their difficult maintenance. Network Computers are ideal for 80% of all computer users. Most home users do not need a 400MHZ Pentium II that costs $4000 to surf the web and read e-mail. The N64 could provide ALL that functionality, upgradeability, plug-and-play, multi-player games, AND cost less than $400 total. I don't think that it's a case with resolutions, I would call it color or pixel sharpness. The amount of pixels transferred to the TV is still the same. But, with lower quality cables, the pixels seem to be "bleeding". From my experience and some info from my friend, I can give you such a list (from worst to best): 1. RF 2. RCA 3. S-VHS and 21-pin Scart (there shouldn't be any quality difference between these two) S-VHS uses a Chroma-Luminance signal 21-pin Scart uses a Red-Green-Blue signal The N64 has outputs for S-VHS and RCA only. Not every game is suited to multiplayer gaming for a start. And *not* all gamers are "calling out" for multiplay! There's a lot of people out there still playing single player games y'know... As for 'may add some time to development', see other threads... Developers don't like things that add time to schedules. And technically, a lot of games 'internally' can't handle more than one player. Each time you add a player, you're adding an extra camera that needs checking, you're adding a whole new set of collisions, movements, scoring, & processing in general. Depending on the game, you could be talking about an exponential rise in calculations! I'm not defending Quake64 here, just talking in general terms. But *surely* 2 player is better than not at all? And surely saving scores cant be that intensive. It all depends on the game type. A first person shooter, with very little 'going on', yes, that *should* be able to chuck in another player relatively straightforward (not considering any display calculations...). But something complicated such as a C&C game, that will require a *lot* more processing. Think of it this way, each player is an 'eye' on the world, with the game calculating the effects & consequences of that screen. With each player added, the program has to calculate an extra 'eye' each cycle. That takes up valuable processing time. And there's definitely *more* code by using multiplayer, not *less*. Every single piece of logic the programmer builds has to get looped round to execute for each player. Yep you gain cycles by not having AI, but someone else on the list *demanded* coop mode multiplayer games!! AI + 2 Players = overload ;-) Brian [ To quit the n64 mailing list, send the message "unsubscribe n64" ] [ (without the quotes) to majordomo@xmission.com ] ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 11 Feb 1998 09:16:55 -0600 From: Michael Bauers Subject: [N64] s-video I find it interesting that so many people are saying that it is a significant improvement using the s-video jacks over the composite input. The reason I find it interesting, is that I messed around for 10 minutes one day with switching back and forth. I could never detect an obvious difference. Admittedly I am not a videophile, and may not have known what to look for. But some posts seem to indicate that I should have been blown away by the difference. Unfortunatly I did not have someone around to switch the connection for me and ask me which was which. Is there someone with time on their hands and a friend do do this experiment for all of us? I am not currently using s-video because I have my N64 at the girlfriends place and none of her TV's have it. I have another theory on this. My s-vdieo equiped TV is a 27" sony. Is is possible that some TV's demonstrate the difference better than others? Getting it is easy, I got it in one try. This is the way I did it: Open the cell door, hit the guard, free Natalya, open next door, go to the left fire sometimes at the guards but keep on running (with the soviet you got from the guard). When you entered the stairs go to the right and open the door, go to the right again and keep on walking until you can enter the big room or turn right. Turn right and go in the very first door you'll see. Get the "dat thing", and go back to the big room. Wait for natalya, she'll set of a timer. Until the timer appears, keep on firing and once you're almost dead go into the glass door and walk up. As soon as the timer appears on screen, leave the level and you should have got the cheat. Yeah, I have been fairly busy with school recently. I can't believe we haven't heard any cries of EGM being biased against N64 on this list yet... :) They gave 3s through 7s on N64 games in their review corner. Plus they had some VERY negative things to say about Nintendo in the Q-Mann section, and then compared Yoshis Story to Yoshis Island which showed EXACTLY why everyone is complaining about YS being too short and easy. If you think that Next Generation is biased against Nintendo (belive me, NG is giving Nintendo more of a chance than they deserve), you have to see how their biggest competitor (EGM) is treating Nintendo... - -Tyler V Snow tvsnow@usa.net [ To quit the n64 mailing list, send the message "unsubscribe n64" ] [ (without the quotes) to majordomo@xmission.com ] ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 11 Feb 1998 02:21:15 -0500 From: "Cho" Subject: Re: [N64] Here's a Topic for ya...Another DD titles turns into a cartridge title. 32MB carts are as big as they get. Well, while some people liked KI Gold, it really doesn't stack up too much as a fighter for the majority of us clods who seem to like quality games. As for the other sequels, the preceding games were actually GOOD (IMO). Well, maybe except for Cruisin' :). >Why would anyone buy ANY sequal? Duh, unlike movies and books, game sequels are usually much better than the first. They generally improve on the engine and crap. I know what you're getting at, but, I don't think you understood where I stand on this issue. I'm just saying I felt ripped off from KI, and I don't see how anyone with my position would want to risk wasting 70 bucks again. >Why? KIGold is great, fun, and an excellent Arcade port.
