Every microprocesser has a specific number of bits as the size for its internal registers. An 8 bit chip has 8 bit registers so it can hold a value for 0-255 in its registers. The formula is 2^N where N is the number of bits. 2^N means to mulitpliy 2 by itself N times. 8bit - 2*2*2*2*2*2*2*2 = 256 16bit = 65536 32bit = 4294967296 64bit = 18446744073709551616 Besides having internal registers, the chip also has a specific numbers of bits that it can get from memory at the same time. This is almost always the same size as the register size. If it is not the as was the case with the processor in the TI 99/4a, the chip could be referred to as in the TI99/4a case as 16/8(16 bit registers/8bit bus.) If two chips had the same speed, but one had twice as many bits, the one with more bits would run faster. Probably not twice as fast, but significantly faster. In closing let me say that like everything else in life, there is no hard and fast rule for determining the bit size of a given system. That is why so many people are arguing. They are basing their arguments on their personal concepts of what a 64 bit system means. From Nintendos standpoint 64 bit is accurate, but is primarily a marketing term.
