You have to be ither Super Mario or Firey Mario at the time too. Run to the far left of the screen and jump on the axe & Bowser at the same time. If you do it correctly Mario will flash but stay 'Super' and Bowser will fall into the lava. Then on the next stage (say 3-1) Mario will start out looking 'Super'. Get a Magic Mushroom and Mario will shrink to become regular Mario, then get a Fire Flower and Mario will be regular Mario with fireballs. It's really strange. Everytime regular Firey Mario throws a fireball he will grow to be Super Mario for a split second. Be warned, when you get hit as regular Firey Mario you'll die.
