Just because it is the state of the art doesn't mean 2D games can't be good. Yoshi's Story is not a good example. It was a child's game and poorly made. I think Metroid could combine elements of 2D and 3D. You could still only move left and right and up and down but you could enter doors on the sides of corridors and the view would switch to that corridor.
