It is something that obviously a lot of people are too narrowminded to accept. These lists are here to for discussion of related topics (in this case N64 or other nintendo matters) but it doesn't end there. like others have said if something pertains to video games in general then there should be no problem discussing it ( even if it veers off target at times) and when people start jumping up and down crying about how this is N64 only I think to myself "Grow up and join the real world". In my opinion being stringent about what subject material is valid here just shows how little experience a person has with the world. you say that there are mailing lists for discussing these types of things but maybe I don't want to have to join every mailing list in the world in order to be able to speak freely. Here we are all video game fans in one form or another ( don't even get me started on those folks who equate Nintendo to Perfection and Sony and Sega and all the others as Losers) and we should be able to discuss calmly things which we feel are pertinent to our lives and being told what is allowed and what isn't is the worst form of censorship I've ever come across. I'm sure there are plenty on this list who are multisystem owners yet unless I am in dire need of help on a game I don't bring it up here because I've seen the responses previously when others happen to mention alternate systems. Of course this isn't the only list that can be so strict that I'm on but the others aren't as rude and unforgiving when you stray OT. The issue is not that the list doesn't permit free speech or anything, the issue is that gun control is in no way related to videogames. I know that it was first brought up when someone mentioned violence in videogames, which is a related topic, but guns are not related in any way. It would not be productive to discuss your political views on this mailing list, because it only leads to flaming and someone being kicked off the list when a war starts over political issues, which are obviously much more volatile than say, "Zelda vs MGS". - -----Original Message----- From: Garrett Winters To: n64@lists.xmission.com Date: Saturday, April 24, 1999 7:18 AM Subject: Re: [N64] What's so hard to understand? >WezMan writes > > >> >> MARK wrote: >> >>> Things have gotten a little out of hand! >>> >>> Mmmmm, is it because I (god forbid) had an opinion, and dared state it? >>> >> >> I'm sure you DO have an opinion, as everyone else does when a tragedy like >> this occurs. Three parents from a different school shooting have a huge lawsuit against several videogame companies, as well as the movie industries, citing specifically the game "Doom" and the movie "Basketball Diary" as greatly contributing to the actions this kid took. They had a "specialist" on explaining how games like Dead House and other shoot-em up type games which feature a simulated weapon, and not a controller, allow kids to obtain the skills of ELITE marksmanship, better than special forces and police sharp-shooters. They say they use games like Doom in the marines to help train them in desensitization concerning human killing, as well as marksmanship; which by the way, they showed the army guys using MICE in the game. I don't remember any of the school shootings involving somebody walking into the school and hurling computer mice at everyone. I certianly don't remember anybody talking about banning or restricting people's access to the Bible after the David Koresh (spelling?) incident in Texas. They cited that the warning lables are "too small" and in awkward positions on the game boxes and arcades, and that the kids pay no attention to them. They continually stated that it is the VIDEO GAME Industries responsibility to, somehow, control who has access to these games. You know, I don't remember reading anything about Einstien being blamed for dropping the Bomb in Japan, yet he paved the way and helped in it's invention. If they want to sue somebody, why don't they sue that kid and his parents in a Wrongful Death suit? I thought we had parents because it was their responsibility, and nobody elses, to control the amount and kind of exposure their children have to such video games. I also never remember any of the enemies in those game being school children. From what I remember they were aliens, akin to demons, who spit fire, and huge monsters with canons for arms. I feel sorry for those people's loss, but they have nobody and no one to blame except the killers and, partially, the parents of those killers. I hope that they lose thier law suit and gain NOTHING from it, and though this may sound harsh, I would smile if those same videogame and movie companies found a way to counter sue. - --David [ To quit the n64 mailing list, send the message "unsubscribe n64" ] [ (without the quotes) to majordomo@xmission.com ] ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 25 Apr 1999 21:54:12 -0600 From: D Fentie Subject: Re: [N64] 60 Minutes The kids that commit crimes are just messed up.
