Nintendo Co. Ltd. made the initial announcement of the successor to Game Boy today when it unveiled early details about Game Boy Advance (temporary name). In addition, Nintendo announced it will form a joint venture, Mobile 21, with Konami to develop software for the new player. Game Boy Advance will use a 32-bit RISC CPU developed by Cambridge, UK based ARM corporation, a well-known developer of CPUs for cellular phones. In addition to sporting a powerful 32-bit CPU, Game Boy Advance will be able to connect to a cellular phone (or a PHS phone in Japan) to access the Internet, thus allowing users to download game software, participate in multi-player games, chat and exchange E-mail. Using a planned digital camera accessory (not the existing Game Boy Camera), a game player would actually be able to see the face of the person they are playing against. Adding communication features to a portable game system like Game Boy is expected to result in new kinds of network entertainment. In effect, Game Boy Advance will be a personal communications terminal as well as a next generation gaming system. Nintendo Co. Ltd. Chairman, Hiroshi Yamauchi, sees it as a way to explore new areas of multiplayer gaming. Mobile 21 will also develop software for Nintendo's next generation home system, code named Dolphin, that takes advantage of the connection capability between Game Boy Advance and the home unit. Initial staff members of the new company will come from both Nintendo and Konami, with new employees to be added as development is expanded. Interest in the new unit among developers is high, and more developers for Game Boy Advance will be announced in the future. Game Boy Advance will play software for both Game Boy and Game Boy Color, though games designed exclusively for Game Boy Advance will not be backwards compatible. In related news, Nintendo Co. Ltd. is also developing an already-announced cellular phone connection device for Game Boy Color in Japan. Though scheduled for an April 2000 release date in Japan, plans to release the Game Boy Color device in other countries have not been announced. The retail price for the Game Boy Advance and its accessories has not yet been determined, though a mass-market price is expected. Game Boy Advance is slated for an August 2000 release in Japan and is tentatively set to release before the end of 2000 in North America. Preliminary Specs for Game Boy Advance: CPU: Memory embedded 32-bit RISC CPU (CPU core design by ARM) LCD: Reflective TFT Color LCD Display Size: 40.8mm x 61.2mm Resolution: 240 x 160 pixels Maximum colors to be displayed simultaneously: 65,000 Size: Approximately Height 80mm / Width 135mm / Depth 25mm Weight: Approximately 140g Power Supply: 2 AA Alkaline batteries Battery life: 20 hours continuous play Launch date: August 2000 in Japan, Christmas 2000 in North America and Europe Suggested Retail Price: To be announced [ To quit the n64 mailing list, send the message "unsubscribe n64" ] [ (without the quotes) to majordomo@xmission.com ] ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 01 Sep 1999 16:12:46 PDT From: "Elliot Jefferson" Subject: Re: [N64] 3 dolphins.. They also say Nintendo plans to have 3 versions of dolphin.. 1 is supposed to be a game-only machine, for as LITTLE AS $100, the second would be able to play CD's and DVD's unlike the previous, and will be more expensive, this will compete against the PSX 2, and Dreamcast (probaly around the dreamcast price), and the last one is a sort of set top box, that can be used for future multimedia services... So, which one will have the modem? The two Dolphin scenario sounds plausable, but the third? Future multi-media purposes. I thought we were through hearing the catch word "multi-media". I know the Jaguar and CDi were (wasn't the 3D0?) billed as Multi-Media systems. What happened to them. Oh, can't forget the multi-media JVC Wonder Mega. I'm just glad that we won't have to wait till after Japan gets it, and look at the little pictures of them playing there game months before our version comes out.. also the possibility of a system at $100 thats that advanced, wow damn it seemed like I've been waiting forever since I pre-purchased my dreamcast, now it will seem like an eternity as I wait for my Dolphin, and my psx 2.. Nev.. >> Frankly I'm sceptical about this info. Since Sony has yet to announce their PSX2 plans at the Tokyo Game Show on Sprt 17th it seems a bit premature for such detailed info from Nintendo.
