Date: 01 Jan 2000 14:18:01 -0600 Maybe I was just crazy, or maybe it was something about the planets aligning, or maybe it was all the chemicals. But The New Year was one of the most amazing experiences I've ever had. I almost felt i could feel the whole world happy and uniting in celebration of another year/century/Millenium that the Human race has survived. I felt like it was a chance for everyone to let loose of all thier stress, and feel happy and enjoy one another. I thought it was silly that it took two simple little numbers to bring the world to this! I imagined how everything in the universe just continuously Expands and collapses. Everything from the stars. To planets. To people. To atoms. And I knew then that no matter what happened everything will be okay, because everything has been the same for the last billions of years, and will continue to keep on going. If the world did explode at that moment last night, I would have been alright with it, because I knew all our particle would spread across the galaxy and form new worlds when it all came back together again. I wish evryone had as wonderful of a new year as I did... And best wishes to everyone hoping that this year all your dreams may come true. Remember everything is all about two Numbers.. 00 or 0 and 1 or 1 and 2 or... i think you get the point. Peace and Love into the Next Orblivion! This is a prefect example of how the media controls the populousus perception. And instigates widespread panic among the masses without even stating any good hard facts. Maybe this will be a good example for everyone to not believe so much of what the news says, and make your own judgement. It did give me a giggle though when about a year back and all this hysteria was starting, and people were going on about what Y2K would affect. Did any of you really believe that it would affect your Toaster or VCR? And as far as for any looting or Terrorism.. People were jsut too damn busy partying to do such things... Maybe all this threat of Chaos made people a little more humble so thus there was no terrible incidents... Well anyway here's to a promising future... I must admit, I *did* go the grocery store around noon on New Year's Eve, but that was to purchase a bottle of stir fry sauce (I was making a "Chinese" dish of my own design). The shelves were full (like any other day), and there was plenty of bread and milk (which is what people go nuts buying around here before a big snow storm). I was honestly surprised. And ya know, I didn't listen to "1999" by Prince once on New Year's Eve. (I played it first thing the next damn morning when I woke up though!) :-) Later! CNN and some of the other networks kept mentioning that Jean- Michel Jarre was headlining an event at the pyramids at Giza, but the coverage was, frankly, quite disappointing. I saw nothing whatsoever of the coverage. To me, orbital's "the middle of nowhere" is the number 1 of electronics in 1999. This includes all single (maxi) releases of that album as well. Sorry U.F.Off. ===>I have this cd, and I must say that the first track (Cups) is one of the, um, grooviest tracks I've ever heard--real stoner music if there is such a thing--reminds me of something Steve Miller Band might do.... I play it all the time. (And I *don't* smoke pot, either!) BUT, I was totally baffled by the rest of the album--it was all drum & bass. I guess I don't understand d&b's appeal, since it sounds like someone simply turned a drum machine on and let it go.... I wouldn't really classify it as electronic music, since to me that suggests synthesizers, and I really didn't hear any on the album...at least nothing that stood out.... I don't think I really got any other new electronic music this past year--just a bunch of stuff from prior years (MUCH older, in some cases--Wendy Carlos' _Sonic Seasonings_, for example). How 'bout electronic album of the decade? My votes would go to (in no particular order): Jean-Michel Jarre (Oxygene 7-13) Orb (UFOrb, Adventures, Aubrey Mixes) FSOL (Lifeforms, Dead Cities, Accelerator) Banco de Gaia (Last Train...) Dread Zone (360 degrees) David Arkenstone (Quest of the Dream Warrior, Wake of the Wind) Tangerine Dream (Rockoon--I can't believe I'm listing that...) There's almost no d&b on Beaucoup Fish at all. Heck, "King Of Snake" is basically a drivin' techno remake of "I Feel Love" with nonsense lyrics, and "Push Upstairs" has very sparse drums, its rhythm coming almost entirely from the piano melody and burbling bass rumbles. "Kittens" is just killer, with only very occasional breakbeats, hardly a full-on d&b track. > ...electronic album of the decade... > Dread Zone (360 degrees) On the other hand, I have a hard time arguing with anyone who likes this CD as much as I do. :-) -- Adam J Weitzman, NewsEdge Corp. While Mr. Slim undeniably has a knack for slamming remixes (and some pretty groovy "original" material), I find him *incredibly*, stultifyingly formulaic. It has gotten to the point where I only need to hear a few seconds of a remix to identify it as his. His ubiquity only drives the point home. I hope he doesn't do an Orb remix. Pork is also the home to Fila Brazillia, who of course did a Toxygene (and come to think of it a Busta Rhymes) mix. The Mammoths have an uncanny knack for blending trip hop, dub reggae, jazz, latin rhythms with live, sparse vocals and real instrumentalists into a very fine, seamless mix. (and there's a hilarious remix of Jean Paul Gaultier out there, too!) >yiiiieeehh - what do people like about him? The only cool thing he did was >the "right here, right now" video, nothing else. Or am I completely out of >space? (I would not wonder;) well, the video for Praise You was brilliant, and has won awards all over the place (not that Mtv/VH1 should dictate what's good or bad). now, i know that all of us here in the states have heard Praise You ad nauseum, but really, his live shows aren't to be missed. his command of the crowd's energy is absolutely phenominal - its like being on a giant cruise ship of love. and he comes across really well live - he seems to have a real humilty and sincere love for the crowds who come out to see him, and all in all seems like a really fun and happy guy. very few djs could pull off mixing michael jackson with the beach boys and still manage to keep everyone dancing. maybe i'm the only one who's gotten into the Big Beat thing, but i find myself surprisingly taken away with him... that said, i've finished my fatboy evangelism for the day. i'll just be off in the corner listening to my fatboy cds all by myself. ;) =) rachel # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "Agust 'Nemesis1' Arni Jonsson" Subject: Re: (orb) Best of '99 Date: 04 Jan 2000 00:25:35 +0000 At 16:37 3.1.2000 -0500, Vince Frank wrote: >[Underworld - Beaucoup Fish] >BUT, I was totally baffled by the rest of the album--it was >all drum & bass. A year of wierdness and chaos for me... My Best Music of '99? Hmm.. Tough, and seems hard to put into this list. But I think One person tops most of it for me.... SquarePusher. I would like to say 'Music is Rotted One note' would be at the top, but that Came out in 98. So I'll have to put down the two Follow up EP's Budakhan Mindphone and Maximum Priest. Followed by his excellent New album Selection Sixteen. I know not many are into Drum & Bass here on the list, but Mr. Tom Jenkins is an exception. (i myself don't care too much for straight up drum & bass, more the wierd stuff). He fuses Modern electronics with Jazz Styles (hell, 'Music is Rotted' coulda been the next Miles Davis album) and Even Overdriving Acid Trax. and he has such a sense of humor that creeps into ya. Next would be Matmos for both The West and Quasi Objects. This might not be everyone's cup of tea, but these amazing San Franciso artist's sculp sounds in very interesting ways. My first impressions are that LX and the crew are having alot more fun with their music than in some previous albums, and are taking themselves less seriously without sacrificing talent. Many of my friends really disliked once more, and I cannot say that I am with them; as I am an Aki fan. It seems also that the Dub/chill out vibe that was somewhat disturbingly absent from orblivion is without a doubt back in force. As fdor overall feel of the album so far, whereas UFORB was a "listen to while laying out in the sun" album, cydonia sounds much like a "trip-toy-latenight-chill-out-room" kinda gig (if that makes any sense at all). It is much more beat-driven and solid than previous efforts, but it stands on its own and might actually suck quite a few new people into the huge evergrowing fanbase. Date: 04 Jan 2000 21:21:47 -0800 (PST) Hello All. I was thinking today about something, and I may be way off here, but as I recall Crystal Method founded the Community Service Tour last year, and they stated on their site that it'll be back next year, bigger and better than before. Last year's headliner was Orbital, for they had a new album out at close to that time. When I asked LX about when the Orb would be around, he said mid 2000... So, if Cydonia is coming out this year, and Community Service tours again, what are the chances the Orb will be part of it? Smiley? just a thought.... BT is Brian Transeau; I usually see him dropped into the "Progressive House" bucket. That seems to translate into fairly overt 4/4 beats with lots of atmosphere ("flying-over-canyons techno" :-) and occasional drifts into rock/pop/hip-hop land. Hangs/works with Sasha, seems to be kind of a surfer type in real life. He's got a site up at www.btmusic.com, it's pretty rough around the edges but there are lots of album clips so you can get a feel for things. (and the second > question is: does anyone really care?) > I think it's from Ennio Morricone's score for the film "Once Upon A Time In The West" which was directed by Sergio Leone. It's not to be confused with the stuff Morricone did for another spaghetti western by Leone entitled "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly" (which, btw, I like a bit better than "Once Upon ...") - the third of the "bucks"-trilogy ("For A Fistful of Bucks" and "For A Few Bucks More" being the first two parts) . To add my two cents (or bucks, for that matter :-)) to the Fat Boy Slim debate: I think his stuff is more or less generic with some good bits standing out. I liked his remixes of Wildchild's "Renegade Master" and Cornershop's "Brimful of Asha" - nice party audio. He really is kind of commercial but that, to my mind, doesn't render him bad automatically. "Dub Be Good To Me" is an all-time classic, especially because it opened doors to dub and other electronic music for a lot of people who were formerly more or less listening to charts-stuff. And the songs Norman Cook (aka Fat Boy Slim) did with Housemartins or as The Mighty Dub Kats goes to show he has quite a wide range of musical abilities, I suppose. Peace and relaxation, everyone! What about the century? I must say that I think the 80s were a much stronger decade for electronic music than the 90s, but maybe that's because the synth is so common, wereas in the 1970s and early 1980s, it was more of a novelty, and lots of "wow that sounds cool!," and now it's as common as the electric guitar.... Please be advised that reacting to statements like yours we have cancelled the release of the coverversion. Meanwhile the producers of the remake have signed a deal with BMG / Ariola. They will release it on CD maxi and compilations early february. We have no further control of what is happening to the track. Please see our email to UR dated 17.12.99. Mike & Rolando, unfortunately you were not able to get back to me personally. Some direct words from you to us could have avoided a lot of misunderstandings, wrong suspicions and excitement causing damage to both sides. Obviously you think, that it is our aim to make UR customers buy Sony records. Kind of paradoxical. We don?t share your point of view that a cover version of Jaguar makes you sell less records. The people interested in your original vinyl are way different to Sony buyers. People who have bought UR records will still buy UR records. In the past days we have received a lot of feedback from the underground to our cover. Apart from some people just abusing Sony Music with 4-letter words, many people express their feelings in a detailed and reasonable style. We understand that you generally disagree with the whole major company business. In this case Sony can be reproached for picking up someone elses idea for profit reasons without taking care of the attitude of the inventor. We realize, that even that we are save on the legal side and the reactions from the ?overground? to our version are euphoric, its commercial release would cause a damage to the relationship of the industry to the underground that could not be compensated. We see ourselves as a company supporting and benefitting from inventive artists. Instead of trying to benefit from the huge buzz that has been created, we have decided to respect your attitude and declare that we will not work any further on the Jaguar cover. Sony Music will not commercially release the track rather on CD maxi or compilations. We are quite sure, that a different company will use the idea and milk the cashcow. We are sorry that we have hurt your feelings. Finally at least the UR record will benefit from the story. We wish you good luck and a lot of sales for this classic piece of music. For example, I'm listening to The Dread Zone's album, 360 degrees, and the track which is playing is "The Good, the Bad, and the Dread." No, it doesn't sample "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly," but it *does* sample music and dialogue from "For a Few Dollars More." The Dread Zone, incidentally, list The Orb as an influence in their credits. Any Orb fan who doesn't have this album should definitely seek a copy out. I put this in my "best of the 90s" list, but forgot to put it in my "best of the century" list--it should be near the top! ;-) Also, Future Sound of London samples Morricone's music from Sergio Leone's last(?) film, "Once Upon a Time in America." (I haven't seen that one yet.... I was going nuts to find it on my "Once Upon a Time in the West" cd, until I realized that the title was "America," not "West"....) ;-) Later! Can someone check and report back? > That would mean that the Mixmag tracks were mislabeled. I get the digest, so apologies if this has been cleared up already. I happen to have the Mixmag CD with me at work today. Here is an updated entry for it: [Various: Mixmag Live Volume 9] CS: 1993 UK (DMC Communcations; MML9) CD: 1996 UK (DMC Publishing; MMLCD 09) [Side A: Alex Patterson] 32:40 System 7: Strange Quotations (orb mix) Suns of Arqa: World Peace A.D? Orb: O.O.B.E. (pool mix) Orb: Blue Room (ambient demo at mark angelo's) There is only 1 track for LX's set. It's hard to say where OOBE (pool mix) ends. It starts around 11:43. I think it runs to about 21:00, when a percussion solo (bongos, bells, rattles, etc.) takes over. This is shorter that the OOBE (pool mix) listed on the boots. There are some pool sounds at around 19:53 - 20:15. There may have been others earlier that I failed to hear. Other samples are a guy talking about wave theory "waves of waves.....", "Beatles on Compact Disc", and some guy talking about looking out over the water. One thing that comes to mind when I listen to this CD is that everything mixed is definitely in stereo. I thought LX's equipment was mono (or that he mixed in mono), which was the story given and to why "Auntie Aubrey" was mono. Hmmmmm. Hope this helped. The Review is mostly written as a review for a Chemical Brothers Show. And the Review of the Orb, well was good for them, but obviously the writher didn't know what they were doing. He said that Alex was DJing stuff from his record Collection. He gives praise to Alex, and the Orb, but clearly doesn't follow too closely. "Pacing the crowd with long interludes of domestic chill-out before roaring back with his personal brand of post-techno/pre-drum & bass antics, Patterson showed exactly why he has been a favorite of the plugged-in cognoscenti since the late '80s." What? Anyways he goes on to totally Praise the Chem Bros. Check it out. (my least > favorite Orb Show, but it's till pretty decent). I have a review of this show from the Tribune. The reviewer was Kevin McKeough, and obviously an Orb fan. He Refers to the Chemical Brothers as "current hot property" and the Orb as "ambient techno veterans", giving them 5 paragraphs as opposed to the Bros 1. He describes the Orb's set: "Granted, the dreamlike music crated over the years by Orb leader Alex Paterson and a varying crew of co-conspirators isn't meant to prompt high-energy exertions, From dub-the slow-motion echo-heavy reggae offshoot-Patterson takes basslines so low and loud they make your pant legs vibrate. Above them, he layers skittering, sharply punctuated drum beats and syncompated electronic melodies" Plus there's a photo of LX's backside, Andy Hughes in front, and a profile of Bil Le Blanc (I think) in the pyramid, and no photo of the Bros. Even better, the week before, the show got a mention in the header of the Tempo section, noting: "Finally the music world is catching up with The Orb, who will be playing sold out show at the Aragon Ballroom this weekend with the Chemical Brothers" and again had a photo of LX and Andy. Gotta love the Tribune's coverage! Gavin __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Talk to your friends online with Yahoo! It first appeared in recorded form in Alex's Mixmag session. Just a tiny piece of it, mind you -- but there are clacky billiard noises in the version of the track on Anthology II. Anyway, as if you people cared, right? Anyway, I'm back on the list with another email address. What's happened with Orb lately? Cydonia's coming out soon, and I heard the samples. Too tell you the truth, I really prefer the Orb at its most beatless and abstract. I love the fact that it sounds more chilled than Orblivion, but I'm still hoping LX and co will go back to their even more beatless roots, but on the other hand, who am I to presuppose I know what they should do, so I'll just shutup now. They'll remain my favorite band nomatter what, I think. When I listened to Cydonia I thought of Mixmaster Morris' "Global Chillage". Anyway, I'd tell you more but I won't. You need to activate your CD-Rom as a recording device in the software mixer of your soundcard. I have an old SB32 by Creative Labs and the "Creative Mixer" (that comes with the soundcard software) has two screens: one that lets you set the output levels for WAV-audio, CD-audio, MIDI etc and another one that lets you set the level for incoming signals from various sources. You need to activate the CD-Rom in this latter menu. This should work, especially if you have a Soundblaster or compatible card. I (eventually, finally) managed to find my copy in Berlin. The 'Aaah...' album is also great, containing both some cool techno and some deep ambient tracks. Besides Sun Electric there's a whole lot more Berlin-based trippy ambient/dub/techno you could go for during this 'recession'. Parts of early Basic Channel 12"s are collected on the Basic Channel cd: very atmospheric and dubby ambient soundscapes. Basic Channel was founded by Moritz von Oswald (Maurizio!). The label doesn't exist anymore, but its musical concepts are continued in closely related (sub)labels like Chain Reaction, Burial Mix, M and Rhythm&Sound (check out www.snafu.de/~circonium/music/ for more details, background info and links). Some names worth listening to if you run into them are Vainqueur ('Elevations'), Monolake ('Hong Kong', 'The Gobi Desert EP', 'Interstate'), Various Artists (= band name, 'Decay Product', '8 8.5 9 remixes'), Porter Ricks ('Biokinetics', 'Porter Ricks') and Maurizio ('M' ?). If you like deep dub try Rhythm & Sound w/ Tikiman ('Showcase') or RoundOne to RoundFive.....lean back and enjoy! It's all pretty scary... panic not. island was owned by Polygram, which was taken over/bought/merged with Universal a year or so ago. although this was NOT good, the orb got through it _relatively_ unscathed - the album has been delayed a number of times, but at least the people they dealt with in pre-Universal days are still there... there's no involvement with EMI or Time Warner, afaik. last i heard, cydonia was tentatively scheduled for a march release in the UK. cheers, ===== Smiley New spares list: http://come.to/SmileyWeb ____________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Strange... I thought it was EMI that bought out Island and not Segrams... Maybe the news report i heard this morning was incorrect. They mentioned that EMI included such European majors such as Island UK and PolyGram. Anyways, all of this really sucks because All these big labels are getting bigger, and to Powerful! And the littler ones that are under it's wings are being swallowed up... Loosing or inconvienencing many decent artists. I mean we saw what happened to the Orb. They had to put out a Best Of album!!! (although a very nicely made best of album that the Orb does deserve.) But how many orb fans REALLY need it? I know the whole idea of a Best of album is to get (so and so, i'm not gonna name any types here, but I'm sure the list knows what I mean). He has had his show for what must be nudging thirty years, and has always been consistent in his approach. He will generally play things that will not get heard anywhere else and will cover more or less all 'genres' (excluding metal!) Each night he has one or two bands who record a special session of three or four songs. Certain sessions were repeated, the criteria seemed to be whether John Peel liked the session, and general listener request. About ten to fifteen years ago the sessions started getting released on vinyl, then CD. The first Orb session was notable since it was the most requested session in the history of the programme. And when you consider exactly how many sessions there must have been and who they were by (think of T-Rex, Captain Beefheart, Smiths, Bowie, blah blah blah) this is quite a feat. I also think that the Orb were responsible for the longest session tracks, which should hardly come as a suprise. Anyone who can listen to Peel's show should make every effort to do so. Have a pen and paper ready to write down those tracks that you will love and will otherwise never hear again. # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Binni Subject: Re: (orb) Peel Sessions? Date: 31 Jan 2000 16:34:51 -0000 Hi all... As an aside from the general discussion regarding the various Peel sessions available, can anybody confirm if all the Radio One sessions performed by the Orb are available in one form or another? My reason for asking is that back in August 1992 I was away from home and happened to be listening to Radio One late at night. During my slumber, I awoke to a unknown Orb track and can only remember the DJ mentioning a part of the title along the lines of "England One, Denmark Nil Mix" Was I dreaming???? I have all the Peel session CD's and the track in question is not included on any.... I've been reading Contact by Carl Sagan. A really good read. I'd recommended it even if you have seen the Movie. It's a very Orbish adventure in the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence! Anyways, there is a part in the Story in which the main character is flying in a plane over the Midwest and she looks down at earth and She begins to think ponder about it... ..."The erosion of landforms, the dendritic patterns and oxbows of rivers, the presence of lakes and battered volcanic plugs all spoke of an ancient battle between landforming and erosion processes.
