Thanks, Chris, for your first posting. There is nothing wrong with a little humor. But then there is a limit to what is funny, what is acceptable, and what is downright offensive. Thanks, Chris, for your second posting. After the second, I sent Chris a message hoping he'd knock off the lewd, unprovoked behavior. Instead, we have... ...Chris's third posting (note the edits!!). How utterly intelligent, Chris. I've been on this list since 1994. I've seen people come and go, and I've made friends and enemies. Mostly friends. I've been involved in flame wars, and started a few. But this kind of unprovoked idiocy speaks for itself. I don't know if this list is moderated anymore. If it is, I hope this initiates some sort of response. If not, well, Chris, you're disturbed. Anyway -- I'm not one to take offense to material like this. Even though many people might claim the attack here is personal to me, I'd like to think that mere words aren't offensive. Jokes are meant to be laughed at, and I laughed -- at the first one. But continual ridicule of certain people, who are certainly not missing from this list, is just insipid and rather repugnant. I hope I'm not the only person who feels this way. I thought this list was a little more tolerant all the way around. Perhaps, after seven years, I'm still wrong, but still hopeful. You decide. -=brian=- # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Simon Bennett Subject: Re: (orb) The things orb peeps do to/with the orb.. So if your ears get hot sometime between GMT/UT 12:30-2PM when Orb is due onstage, that'll be me making a special wish that you could somehow be there too :) -jc ---8<--- To: orb@lists.xmission.com Date: 10:28PM, 4 December 2001 Hello Orbsters, Preamble: I haven't posted for years. Old-timers might recall me wishing that Orb came to Australia, because we can still have legal outdoor parties, and there's strange lizards and tropical beaches and rainforests and snowy mountains and all sorts of things esteemed visitors would enjoy. And that post attracted a personal reply from an Orb member... oh look I still have it in my mailbox, 17-March-1996. He hoped they could come to Australia as well, and only lamented bad promoters cancelling their plans. Alex Patterson did two DJ concerts in Melbourne in 1999. They were thoroughly amusing, because he was abit sloppy in parts - but always followed through with some impeccable selection or spoken sample that was just perfect. A friend and I said hello at the bar abit later but he was preoccupied. He also did a sloppy lunch hour on radio and I got the log tape haha. Anyway -- thanks to lurking around these digests, I heard Orb were finally coming out here, and yippeee - an outdoor concert! For me, the timing was perfect. 1. I'm possibly relocating to Korea and doubt Orb would tour there. 2. I was overseas just recently, very reluctant to return home to Australia's re-elected neo-liberal, racist political regime - but Orb concert gave me the courage (and the hedonism :) and 3. This is my favorite "band" for about 10 years, so attending their concert -finally- at age 29, is really nice. So a big thankyou to everyone here for keeping the list alive. Thanks Bbbrooo encouraging me to post. Thankyou also Orb people for coming here. Report: The event was held in a lovely state forest about 90km from the city. The organisers have been doing outdoor parties here since mid-90s. They've lost alot of the older trance hardcore supporters over the years, but still manage to pull off big budget outdoor events with a ripe crowd of clubber youth. Interestingly, in all my conversations with strangers you meet, very few knew who The Orb were, or perhaps they'd heard of them but were mainly just out for a party. Ah, kids today :) It was difficult to guage numbers. Maybe 5,000? Just a Saturday late spring afternoon around a forest with lots of cars, tents, colours, car stereos, toilet trucks, people wandering around... a marketplace, 3 or 4 sound stages (I got abit lost in counting or finding them later :), an outdoor cinema, etc. At night-time, there were lots of projections in the trees, flouro installations etc. Orb were due on the main stage at 3-5:30am. After 2, it got increasingly crowded there. And it rained lightly for 5mins. My partner kindly offered to videotape the concert, which is quite a challange - holding the thing above your head for 90mins, buffeted by people. We found a high patch by a tree, about quarter of the way back. Quite a few people were videotaping. It was nice to see the viewfinders held up above people's heads throughout the crowd - abit like mini-televisions repeating the view of the stage for people behind that couldn't see. Tiny LCD screens at night and outdoors can be abit mesmerising. It was a very tight set, complimented by very tight video on the stage backdrop. The video was long loops rather than transitions. Lighting effects were nice. They played some classics like Fluffy Clouds, Perpetual Dawn, Blue Room... some misc filler stuff... a really funny bondage version of Sound of Music - "my favorite things".., and some new things. I could see someone with I think a blonde spikey hairstyle doing live guitar, so made my way to the stage. Being at the front didn't help viewing. Anyway,pre-recorded sound and some embellishments, The Orb were finally playing a live concert outdoors in Australia and everyone seemed happy. Super. In my head at the time were all sorts of profound thoughts, and the sample "the music was fantastic". At exactly 90 minutes, the set ended. The crowd cheered loudly, earning an encore. The encore was extra special. Unfortunately I can't remember exactly ("the music was fantastic"), and we only had 90mins batteries for documentation and later review. I wandered off after the encore, but one member of our camp reports dancing by the speakers at the left of the stage and being joined by Alex Patterson wearing a kilt and dancing madly into the dawn. Haha. Outcomes: Well, we watched some of the video. It's good for review of what they played, and the sense of it being live. I'd like to put some snippets online for list members, but unsure of the legalities. Also, theres another Orb concert in Melbourne this friday night. Some club/hotel venue, not sure where, but I won't miss it. It's now summer here, but cool miserable weather. Sorry Orb members (if they read this) but Melbourne gets summer in February. Further up the east coast, Sydney is having terrible storms, but Brisbane is warm and sunny. -- OK. That's all for now. Thanks for reading. -jc # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "Dark Eyed Kid" Subject: Re: (orb) discog Date: 07 Dec 2001 18:54:42 -0000 Rachel, Absolutely tremendous piece of work. Date: 14 Dec 2001 17:55:57 +0000 i just received this from garphoo. I don't know what to think. Is badorb saying that all this music I've been paying for and waiting for is going to be released on CD anyway? Back Catalogue? Why bother release them monthly? Why not just release them all right now? Why not just throw all xx many records in a box set and sell them at once and be done with it? Maybe I'm confused, but Badorb has lost it's magic for me -- i was expecting better news. :::::: Greetings once again dear friends. I, Garphoo, His Omni-Present Completeness, trust that you are absolute in your Bobness. As The Moon of Long Nights ascends, I would like to wish all our Friends of Gardonia and Bobby Dazzlers everywhere a jolly holiday and hope that everybody is enjoying their Bobs & Togs. I would also like to thank you for your comments and suggestions as we appreciate your input. On with proceedings dear friends, outwards bound we venture… In my infinite wisdom, I have decided to keep FUSIONIC - BOB#8 on the site until 13th January 2002. There are a variety of reasons for this. Santa refusing to leave the Sauna Temple with a bevvie of Gardonian beauties is one of them. Normal monthly service will be resumed in the New Yera - BOB#9 will now arrive at the site on 13th January 2002 with The Moon of Snows. Now for some more Bad news: As from BOB 11 (14th March 2002) we will be making each BadOrb.com release available on CD as well as vinyl. We will also be opening a back catalogue section in the Gardonian Gift Shop (the ‘commerce’ section to humans), which we plan to have in place for the start of the New Year. We will also be placing a BadOrb.com CD compilation in the Master Temple for worship in May. It will feature all your favourite Gardonian characters and BadOrb audio stimuli, selected and stirred by Pantoes Relax. And now friends, if you return to the BadOrb.com site on New Year's Day 2002 we will have an extremely exciting Gardonian News Bulletin. Take care my friends, and may your pressies come with batteries. _________________________________________________________________ MSN Photos is the easiest way to share and print your photos: http://photos.msn.com/support/worldwide.aspx # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: John Goelzer Subject: RE: (orb) WTF? Why bother release them monthly? This came up once before when they repressed BOBs 1-3. I think repressing (back catalog) totally dilutes the strong original concept for the label. It also makes me feel like a sucker for ordering multiples, thinking as I did so that it was my only crack at getting these records. What's unclear from Garphoo's message, though, is whether the forthcoming back catalogue items are actual vinyl represses or part of the new CD offerings. I'd feel better about having bought all the multiples if the vinyl pressings *remained* one-shot deals, but the CD copies were always available as back catalogue items. Anyone agree/disagree? Anyone know whether the back catalogue is offering vinyl or CDs or both? Anyway, just back from the Orb *indoor* concert in Melbourne, I can report it was a fantastic night. The whole house rocked :D Who: - Alex Patterson with no hair, playing records. He got the timing wrong sometimes, making things tricky for the others, but OK it was funny. - A man with brown pageboy kind of hair who mixed and played bass guitar and had a lovely smile. - Another man with brown shorter hair and sharper features, mixing (he would rip a strip of masking tape off the mixing rig at the end of each track and toss it down the side to read the layer underneath.(How organised). - A man with blonde spikey hair who didn't play anything but sat low behind the mixing console, making vast gestures to the venue mixing desk behind/above the audience. Finest moment: Intro to Blue Room, just as the acoustic bass guitar kicked in. Wow it all came together. Nice one! The video was good and appropriate as well. If anyone from Melbourne who attended is reading - trust you also had a super evening!! --- What I most want to communicate is one big THANKYOU ORB!! Thank you for making a fantastic concert for the Melbourne audience. Thankyou for playing some of your classic tunes, and those impeccable Orbish voice samples. Thankyou SO MUCH for all the great moments we've all had over the past 10 years or so, hearing these musical ideas. THANKS! So glad you came to Australia _finally_ --- If I could meet Orb people while they're here, as a gesture of appreciation, I would take them to a very special place in the foothills of the Snowy Mountains (near Hanging Rock).. on a warm day, to sit atop a hill in the shade of gum trees (or recline on low, lazy branches) to watch the big fluffy clouds sculpting a reflection of landscape below, or the patterns the wind makes in the grassy slopes. A perfect place to doze, listen to music or make handheld music with headphones on. Most of all, sometime in the afternoon at this particular place, about 3 tribes of kangaroos come across the hills from different directions and meet, on their way to water. It looks abit like a scene from Jurassic Park. Then the brave scout kangaroos come forward to check out the humans, if we're OK then the other kangaroos can pass. It's very special, like a T1 connection with ancient dreamtime. But hopefully Orb people have done something like this here already :) -jc # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: John Goelzer Subject: RE: (orb) Orb indoor concert in Melbourne, Australia Date: 14 Dec 2001 12:15:30 -0600 > A man with brown pageboy kind of hair who > mixed and played bass guitar and had a > lovely smile. Subject: (orb) Badorb's Business Model Date: 18 Dec 2001 11:08:27 -0500 Just went through the digest that I got today and read Garphoo's message. WHAT A BURN! I understand that it is nice and convenient for all the CD folks to get their copies. However, this whole mess with making claims to limited copies all took a turn for the worse when the first three Bobs were re-pressed. As a fan who has been prepared to buy two copies at a time and had been ready to commit close to £150.00 a year from my salary to a great concept, I think that it is irresponsible, as a business, to promise one thing and deliver something else. I am a serious record collector and I cannot deny that I question the value of these 12" vinyls I have so carefully ammassed. Unlike some music communities (take punk for example), I am in complete support of these guys making a living and breaking more ground in their careers. I do not feel I should sense any "ownership" over such a tight music community, as many fans do. But dammit - it's outright wrong to mislead a consumer. Pressing CD's? I've already burned my backups in WAV and mp3 and don't even need to play the vinyls anymore (at a better bitrate than even BadOrb is providing!). I think it's a farce and naïve to think that you can change your business model on the fly and think that your market will just go with it. I may as well start searching for the songs on any one of the many search engines out there. After all - what's limited about all this these days? I hope that the least they could do is ditch the Orbthenticity bull. Keep the first run of these things limited by at least taking those out. At least some of us will still feel we got our money's worth for being first in line. m a r t l e p p i k - floor115 -- --------------------- m a r t l e p p i k __________________________________________________________________ Your favorite stores, helpful shopping tools and great gift ideas. Date: 19 Dec 2001 12:17:24 -0200 First post on the list, hello all, this is Peter from Mighty Manchester UK. I'll try to catch up with the list and I promise I won't ask any silly silly silly question. I'm a big fan of Kraftwerk since 1986. Big fan of Klf and Orb too. I'm a regular on 808state.com and there you can find some info about me. What else? I have a label, I'm a producer and I have a good record collection... very good I think, as I've been DJing from 1990 till 1998. I still spin some music whenever people ask me. I think that's all. It's nice to be here. I'd like to get the interim copies, but I'm not sure if I can.
