I would like to disagree. I think that this album is very much worth the price, even though I got it for $30. The Orb remix of Supernova is just great. And there are other songs that are very good, too. Such as Orbital, Underworld, PWEI, Cabaret Volataire, and not to mention Node. I have been trying to track down any Node albums here in BC, Canada, but haven't had too much luck. Found a single or two, but that is it. I would highly recommend this comp. just due to the fact that a lot of it is fukn awesome. And the Moby remix rules. My opinion, thanks for coming out.... Has anyone heard of this and what it sounds >like and if it's worth picking up? Wasted is a compilation/selection of early Volumes. The Orb track Reefer Spin in the Galaxy is a remix of Supernova at The End of Supernova from Adventures Beyond The Ultraworld. This remix also appears on The Orb Anthology 2 bootleg (said to be a remix of an early Back Side of the Moon???) and given away on a free tape with UK magazine VOX long time ago. It's nice but to me not very special. Don't think this Orbtrack make it worth to buy the album for $44. Date: 01 Jul 1996 19:41:43 -0400 I have Wasted and it's one of my favorite albums. It's put out by the people who do the Volume CD magazine, and it's a release of earlier stuff that happened to be faves. It has a nifty book, and it's turned me on to some stuff I wouldn't hear otherwise, being in America. The track is a remix of the beat laden portion of "Supernova" and runs just under 5.00. I didn't pay #44 for it, though -- it was only $21 here (about #15). If you have a chance to pick it up, do, because it's a very nice set. For the record, the Orb also are on the first volume of Volume's "Trance Europe Express", which has the Milliwall mix of "Majestic." Check out http://www.demon.co.uk/volume for the other stuff. Last time I checked they had the first Trance Europe Express bunged, but maybe they've fixed it by now. Windows 95 Sucks So does Nando Technics loves Dr. Pepper. There not a sold silver from the outside to the inside ring like the original, but instead like all other cds, that have that little dip in-between the recordable part, and the pastic ring in the center. Remember the discussions on this list and the ambient list on both albums?. Both albums were received wih mixed feelings and maybe you know how Uk magazines are always looking for new hypes. Anyway, I recently tried to get into the Orbital concert in Boston at the Axis club. It was my first experience trying to go to an ambient/trance show, and I was suprised when I couldn't get in. The line was perpetually long and I was convinced I wouldn't have trouble getting in to see a band that so little of the U.S. has heard of. My question is...are all concerts of this type that difficult to get into? Should I show up a few hours early just to get in? I'd like to know because I plan on trying to get to see ENIT in NJ next month... d_scott ************************************************************************** * * * * D. I do have a word of warning though if anyone besides me would be attending this show -- the security there think they're GOD, and love to harass people. They want to sell you everything and will frisk you so that you don't bring any contraband like *decent food* so, expect to pay Woodstock '94 prices for water, soda, beer, and what have you. I have said in the past that I would not go back to WC (a venue that normally has shit like *Whitney Houston*, *Sting*, *Bette Midler*, *Billy Ray Cyrus*, *Styx*, *Foreigner*, etc. -- all those old phart mega-tours) even if it were the fucking Beatles -- all FOUR of them. I went to the first Lollipoplosers there and saw security beat up a guy for doing nothing more than rolling down the hill -- he was having the time of his life, shame they ruined it. I've been several other times (obliged to go for different reasons) and it's been the exact same every single time. Orbital vs. Orb -- hmmm? Two different bands, similar name. I like them both. It's a legal release on Deviant (from the makers of Volume and Trance Europe Express). It's a double CD or 4 x blue vinyl lp with 72 page book with the Orb story and complete discography / mixography. It will be released tomorrow (july 15th) in Europe and contains 18 remixes. Next to recent remixes their are some very, very hard to find mixes on it. For me a new mix for Primal Scream's Higher than the Sun (8.46!). They also threw some new samples in some of the mixes and a lot of mixes are mixed in an ambient way (the intro's come into the beatless endings). All mixes are at full lenght! Volume 2 of this remixproject is already made and hopefully arrive soon. The second Peel Sessions (92-95) is not a double CD. It's on the BBC's Strange Fruit label and contains 4 session The Orb did for the popular radio show from John Peel. OOBE and No Fun from 1992 and Montage d'or and Valley from 1995. BTW UK magazine Vox gave a free tape with the june edition called The Mark Radcliffe Sessions from BBC radio 1. It is especially small for full-on concerts. The Orb and Moby played the same room last year, but the stage is cramped, the ceiling is low. Maybe a few hundred people can fit in there, but it was way too crowded and the ventilation was hardly adequate. The club was packed solid. People were told they could buy tickets ahead or just to be in line by 10pm. My friend and I were there at 9:30 and there was already a long line. If the show had been in Avalon next door there would have been no problem and the show may still have sold out in a room that can fit 2,000. Avalon does big club business on Fridays, so maybe it was not available. Boston lacks a decent range of rock and dance concert venues for a city that prides itself so much on its music! Underworld played Avalon in June and had a good crowd I understand but not a sellout crowd and the Underworld show was barely promoted here. I think the Orbital show had more hype around it. Spacetime Continuum (Jonah Sharp) was due on at 11pm. Orbital at midnight. There was to be a live radio broadcast In Axis the speakers are either on the floor or just over the heads of the audience. It was a loud concert that got way too loud, so I was glad to have my big ugly green earplugs for the last half, allowing me to catch the sound to dance to without having my head feel shellshocked throught the next day. There are large square pillars that block view of stage from the sides. Not really a good concert venue. The music was excellent and the helmets on the Hartnoll Brothers (with the lamps that in the darkness looked like alien eyes scanning the audience) and the laser light and the projections behind the stage were all enjoyable, but again not enough room, especially to do the light show justice. > I recently tried to get into the Orbital concert in Boston at the Axis > club. Date: 21 Jul 1996 22:46:13 +0200 (MET DST) I just woke up; I spend 26 hours without sleeping, but it was worth it ! Me and my girlfriend, we traveled from Paris to Zeebruge to go to the Tribal Beach night (including Leftfield, A guy called Gerald and ORB !), a part two of the annual Axion Beach Rock festival. I thought I was lucky this day : I found yesterday the Apollo compilation with the Electrote remix (just two days after I found the Technodon Remixes II and the Auntie Aubrey's...cool week). The Rock part ended with the Sex Pistols (it might be a scam, but they play it very well...), so I thought there was a possibility of a Lydon/Leftfield reunion or a strange Orb version of "No fun", but no ! The crowd was very addicted on booze (I don't drink, I don't smoke, I don't take drugs, I'm desperately clean, maybe I was the only one), but cheerful : Leftfield was okay, but not too much my cup of tea. I waited until 2am to hear the Orb live , I was with my girlfriend just in front of the scene, she wore a Pomme Fritz-like Tshirt, while I was wearing a Glow In the Dark Orb one. I think Alex saw us. Hope so ! (I don't know why, but when I go to an Orb concert, I act like a Take That groupie, and I'm 25 !). In fact, it was only Alex and Andy. No bass, no drums, no guitars. The Orb at Tribal Beach Night 21/07/96 Mix : Talks, Funky music, Pato Banton remix, A huge ever.... A remix of Cranberries "Zombie" (Orb remix ?) Set : 1.First track (dub jungle-like, maybe Cocksville, USA ?) Mix : RCA music of Space 2.Blue Room (very different version) 3.Second track (kinda cool with Deep Forest-like vocals) 3.Third track (hypnotic) Mix : cheesy disco records (5mn, way too long !) 4.Fourth track (spacey, with Diva samples) The set lasted only one hour, because at 3am, the festival decided to shut down (it was supposed to end at this time, but the show was late...). Alex and Andy were sorry and pissed, so as us and most of crowd. I traveled 400 miles to see just one hour of my favorite group, I was sad. I'll boycott the next Axion Beach festivals for that (and it's not really easy to dance on the sand). But to hear new tracks of the next album...joy of joy ! I wanted more ! Please Andy or LX, if you read us, tell us what are the names of the titles you played ? The sound was very clear, there were 3 screens showing scenes from "From Earth to Moon" by George Melies, and maybe "Earth vs Flying Saucers"...not forgetting moon shots and flamenco dancers ! Plus a scene from a 70's movies with 4 guys wearing red and the Union Jack: they were lilliputians, I remember... And LX was smoking during the concert ! Well, greetings from Europe. Don't miss the Auntie Aubrey's excursions ! Nico, do you know more about the second remix project ? Laszlo, do you need help for completing the discography ? Take care, cyberfriends. Alex and Andy were jumping up and down and really enjoying wat they're doing. After that short sample of the live experience we got to see Alex backstage with some girl from MTV doing strange things with food!! At such moments I'm lucky to have that shit station on my tv. JC asked me about that second remix project. In UK mag Select from last month they asked Alex about the remix project (they gave it 5/5). This is what he said: The reason I wanted to do it is because I'd got fed up with all these bootlegs coming out with various mixes that weren't even cut right. They've been racking some of them in HMV-like they're a new Orb album. The scary thing is how many of them aren't on Aubrey... I mean there's over 60 of them now. We haven't touched any of the YMO stuff, Front 242, Wendy & Lisa.. Select suggested that part 2 is already been made. Alex also told Select that the new album will arive in the first week of october. "We've actually spent some time thinking about dance music, and rythms, as opposed to our non-dance ambient music. We've been listening to a lot of jungle, and that shines through. But I'd still like people to be able to take an Orb album home and actually listen to it, rather than it be solely a dance album." You've been watching The M-cyclopedia part 'O', right? I put a circle around it in the TV guide, and I've made a rule out of waiting with my first joint AFTER I've programmed the VCR, but yesterday's attempt failed, of course. It hadn't crossed my mind again until Nico's mail. But they have their moments. Two weeks ago they showed Orbital live in the MTV studio for an hour (actually it was the third time they showed it but.....who cares) And at Party Zone or Chill-out they play some good stuff at times. But you have to watch on teletext first to find out if their is anything you like, otherwise you got to look at hours of fucking commercials and the same Eurodance that goes on for days. And I know they played a lot of Orb in the past. Especially at Summertime Festival Time, so it's MTV on my TV at summertime. Killing Joke - Democracy --- also has quite a bit of vocal sampling but still very listenable. ambient... but with a beat it sort of reminds me of OT. Keiichi Suzuki - Satellite Serenade --- THIS IS SONG IS THE BOMB! it starts off with a guy talkin and it is really ambient.. then a REALLY NICE guitar part comes in and eventually it fades into regular orb intelligent dance music! it mixes into the next song... Zodiac Youth - Fast Forward the Future --- THIS SONG IS INSANELY GREAT (the best on the album imho). it has got what has rumored to be fox moulder (xfiles) talking through it. it is fast and A+! Primal Scream - Higher Than The Sun --- This song has got the primal scream guy doing vocals that blend really nice with the music, which is ambient first, but later on goes housey. it fades to... Ready Made - Ambient State --- about a minute of ambience... it fades to... Wir - So And Slow It Grows --- another really nice song. the drumbeat on the song and just about every song on this disc is great. Yasuaki Shimizu - Secret Squirrel --- ambience.. nice ambience... DISC 2 =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Yello - You Gotta Say Yes... --- starts out really ambient and somehow pastes itself together into a phat song with a beat and a really phat sample. Innersphere - Out of Body --- the song hits in the same vein with earth (gaia), but it has some guy on drugs sayin cool stuff on it. Depeche Mode - Happiest Girl --- really nice sorta off key thang goin on throughout the song... the beat is nice, too... the vocals at first bug the hell out of you, but dont worry.. it will grow on you! Erasure - Ship of Fools --- imho - this is the worst song on the album... but it is a good song anyways-the beats are beats from rap songs with an orb twist, but the vocal dont agree w/ me. Sun Electric - O'Locco --- really sweet song! nice beat with a heavy snare sound and a PHAT bassline! Maurizio - Ploy --- nice ambient song the sorta reminds me of montagne d'or... mixes with... Time Unlimited - Men of Wadodem --- WOWEE!!!!! the kind of orb song that makes you happy to be alive! non stop crazyness and fun! the song is 4:20 long... (hmmmmm.... i wonder if that was intentional :) fades out to.... Paradise X - 2 Much --- starts out with "calling the meek and the humble..." and has some crazy starwars type shit! nice and ambient (with some lovely piano and whistleblowin) and towards the end... drumming!... and after that... accordian! breaks into the super fun... HIDDEN TRACK (WELLL NOT TOO HIDDEN) --- .. this track is in the space between 8 and 9 and it is some guy talking about HI FIDELITY (it is WEIRD!) P.W.E.I. - Home --- If you like slug dub - you WILL LOOOOVVVE this track... it is a dub and it is crazy as hell.. the vocals are all cut up and remind me of the old kix commercial (ii lovelove berryberry kixkix... :) LOVE KITTENS - What Goes On --- decide for yourself.. this is TOO weird :) that's it.. i hope you don't all hate me for wasting bandwidth, but i know that if i didn't have this album yet, that I would appreciate this kinda shit. -zerozero- going to the ENIT festival!!!!! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: mr@nit.be (Marc Resibois) Subject: Re: REVIEW - auntie aubrey's excursions above and beyond the call Date: 29 Jul 1996 09:21:31 +0200 | HIDDEN TRACK (WELLL NOT TOO HIDDEN) --- .. this track is in the space | between 8 and 9 and it is some guy talking about HI FIDELITY (it is | WEIRD!) Well, that's not 100% true. There are a few exceptions, but this is very much Dr. Alex and Thrash territory. The grass is greener on the orbient side. If you like any Orb stuff; in particular Ultraworld (and the remixes), UFOrb and Live 93, then you'll like this. Liking any of the original tracks here is not necessary, with one or two possible exceptions (read below). If you are new to The Orb, then liking Banco De Gaia, Leftfield, Pink Floyd or FSOL may be a good sign for liking this album. Then again, it may not. Within, this booklet is a glossy layout. There are the usual logos, quotes, discography and promo article. Reading through it, I find a rather cynical feeling on the `chill out' scene. But it is very thoughtful and interesting. The discography is very descriptive. The quotes are amusing. And the article is informative. Normally I'm put off by little booklets and other silly novelties coming with albums. The Trance Europe Express compilations had one or two good books about the artists, but by Volume 4 they degraded into fashionable teenage bollox. The X-Mix compilations had a set of DJ cards for Volume 5, and a techno quiz for part 6. Bubble gum and stickers next, I'm sure. The little Orb book is nice. Don't be put off by it. The tracks are mixed together with a little extra production by the Orb. This makes it a good solid piece of work, so, although it is a compilation, it retains a certain homogeneity. The first CD offers a great deal of pleasure. The Material track is quite lively; it's very FSOL towards the beginning. Many smooth samples and whispy sounds. It progresses nicely becoming a little tribal (Air 2 style). Democracy is very spacey and quirky, a bit like Daniel Pemberton meets Orbus Terrarum. By the time Satellite Serenade begins, the listener(s) is well chilled. This track is just beautiful. Suddenly, one is reminded of the days of Ultraworld. I'm also reminded of FSOL's track Ill-Flower on Lifeforms. Yes, yes, the Orb are still number one! A lovely beat kicks in later on. Very Ultraworld. Fast Forward The Future is even better. Fuck me, how I've missed this stuff. This one is like Magestic on UFOrb. Higher Than The Sun is very effective. Very Leftfield. The Orb do a magnificant job remixing this one. Lovely track, lovely track. So psycadelic. So help me, the vocals are even good (they play a small part, anyway). The synth and rhythm work is juicy. Ambient State is a short and sweet interlude - a smooth 808-State (Pacific State) type synth, complete with Dolphins and birds. The Wir track is very nice. This is another rock/indie track that is completely Ultraworld-ized. Secret Squirrel is a complete wind down, just the thing to cap off the tracks before. Very chilled and smooth. What a great disc CD1 is. From Satellite Serenade onwards is the best part of the album. The second CD start off with a Yello remix. Bits and pieces of conversation, coupled with animal sounds and other whispy noises, open this track. This is a typical interlude - waiting to build to something. Slowly but surely it does form into a rhythmic trip. Fairly slick and energetic. A bit varied from the previous disc. Out Of Body is weird and abstract, like Pomme Fritz, and smooth, like Obus Terrarum. Happiest Girl is quite fruity at first, but liking Depeche Mode vocals may be an advantage. Yet another rock/pop track is orbified. It has a nice Orb-techno feel. Ship Of Fools starts off with a slick techno sound. The Erasure vocals crop up later on. Nice tribal-ish, Ultraworld rhythm. O'Locco is very clubby. A slow trancey track, with a dubby feel. Ploy is chillier. Nice feel to this track. This is reminisent of Plateau or Valley on Orbus Terrarum. There are fast soft beats later on, though. Men Of Wadodem is another orbified rock outing. Not very spacey, more bassy. 2 Much is chilled out. Birds and seashore sounds. A jazzy piano jams away. Vocals from the original track are messed with. Nice rhythm accompanies the piano. Good track! Home is a reggae track - like a toned down off-beat version of Perpetual Dawn. What Goes On is rock/guitar type of crap - the Orb do enough to signal their presence. It's a little spacey in parts. Not great though. That ends the album off. The album is varied; it has Orb techno, astract musaks, smooth ambience. Only in the second disc does the listener feel less spaced out, and more down to Earth. The whole album is very nice, and is just brilliant in places - i.e. the first disc. Once or twice, though, a track may not be interesting enough. This is only due to the original input of the tracks. Having said that, this is very much an Orb creation. It should be in your Orb collection right beside their original stuff. These guys can take a track, suck it right into their little world, chew it up, and spit it back out at you. In the little booklet, one gets the impression that Dr. Alex is bemused by the `ultraworld' chill out scene that he feels has come and gone. He feels it's time to come back down to Earth (cue Orbus Terrarum) and explore new avenues. In that respect, this album is a taste of paradise lost.
