BTW: I've never heard the KLF. Sould I? Like the Orb's work at all? From the Sonic State: KLF MAN ARRESTED JIM CAUTY was arrested over suspected gun offenses this weekend - after taking two tanks to a New Age road protest. Thirty police with sniffer dogs searched the former KLF frontman's farmhouse before taking him to the A30 protest camp at Fairmile near Honiton, Devon. They seized the Saracen tanks, fitted with de-activated grenade launchers and experimental 1970s sonic weapons. Cauty, released on bail after being held for 12 hours, says, "I suppose if you take two tanks to a road protest you've got to expect the authorities to get involved." The 39-year-old star moved the tanks onto the woodland site to entertain protesters opposed to the new A30 dual carriage way. But according to locals, the worst Cauty has done is blast PUFF THE MAGIC DRAGON across the countryside at 100 decibels. --- -Charlie *Member: Interstellar Groove Patrol* # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Email majordomo@xmission.com with "info orb" in the message. # Postings must go to orb@xmission.com -- replies go to original sender. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Toby Subject: (orb) why you should listen to the KLF Date: 04 Nov 1996 13:37:13 +0000 (GMT) But of course you should listen to the KLF.A particularly fine album is Chill Out,great samples (elvis, sheep, acker bilk etcetc.) and very mellow, good for doing what the album says really (exhale....) I remember seeing copies at the Tower Records in Washington D.C. some months ago, but they may not have any more. Again, Dave Steinhart at E/R and Compact Disc Europe both used to be able to get this, so they may be worth a try. Since System 7 recently signed a new U.S. distribution deal with Cleopatra Records for release of the most recent album, perhaps the _777_ album (the second one) will finally see the light of day here as well. I saw them for their first set (the Friday night one). Having seen bands like Candlebox (ick), Live (yay) and Violent Femmes (best-in-show, imho), I heard rumors of some "Ravestock" thing going on at the South stage. So, after the Femmes, I wandered over to find Deee-Lite on stage, followed by quite a few others (they tell me MOby & Aphex Twin; like I could tell). Finally, I tired of hearing the screeching and whining of Aphex (I assume) and wandered off. After I went about 500 yds from stage, I heard a vaguely familiar bassline. It took me a full minute to realize that it was the Orb. Thus I covered the 500 yards in, oh, about 30 seconds ;) and, as the crowd dwindled from (rough guess of) 10,000 at the start to closer to 500 by the time Alex & co. finished the set near sunrise , I realized this was why I agreed to work at Woodstock. That would be the Oxbow Lakes single. I've got it, it's really good although none of the remixes were done by Paterson. There are 4 remixes, including one which is all strings. I go to Queen's University in Kigston, Canada, and study electrical engineering. I've been an Orb fan for two or three years and I also listen to stuff like Orbital, 808state, Aphex Twin, etc. I recently got The Orb Remix Project and really love it. This summer I also remembered seeing Textures somewhere, but at the time I didn't know that it had any connection with The Orb, just that it had something to do with the Trance Europe Express series. I'm sure someone on this list must have that one, and if so, could you please tell me what the album sounds like and just how much remixing Alex Patterson did on it? Does it sound orbish or is it just a bunch of songs from the series stuck together? Is it anything like The Orb Remix Project? Thanks. Last Night I picked up the new ORB remix of "Zombie" on the U.S. CD5 release of the Cranberries: When You're Gone - Free To Decide (Island 422-854 825-2). The track is listed as: " Zombie (A Camel's Hump Remix) (7:53) Remixed at BIG by Andy Hughes and LX Patterson (ORB) " The track contains more of the original vocals than I expected, but is good for a listen nonetheless. Interesting intro and exit. Brag time...I also picked up not one, but two copies of the Prong "Rude Awakening" CD single remixes (for 99 cents each!!) at Poo Bahs in Pasadena, CA. These were promo copies with the Subtle as a Velvet Doc Martin - Left and Right mixes. These are much harder mixes, due in no doubt to the original material, and remind me slightly of their last performance here in L.A. I was lucky enough to see them at both ORGANIC and ENIT this summer, with the last being their best and hardest performance I've seen. Very danceable rythyms with passages that had a unique jungle-like feel. It wasn't what typically is known as jungle (even intelligent), and yet that is the only way I can describe it. Hopefully their new album will follow the feel of their ENIT performance. Follow your heart.....then take a left. I didn't know *any* of the tracks he put on, but some of them were excellent. He spun quite a variety of stuff, from slamming trance to weird & spastic drum&bass to hard distorted stuff to very cheesey electro-disco. No familiar vocal samples over top of anything, though. It sounded like he was using some effects (i.e. flange and delay, at least) on some records, but the DJ who went before him told me he didn't see anything but turntables and a mixer on the stage. Personally, I could have done without some of the stuff he played, but the trance was first rate, and some of the drum&bass was interesting. The evening was nowhere near as awesome as Live Orb last year, imho, but worth $8 all the same. Subject: (orb) Just About Everything Date: 16 Nov 1996 08:51:00 -0800 Hello from Colorado! I have a few questions to ask plus some things to add... 1. Is the MBM/LX show coming to the Mile High City (Denver)? 2. Is there a way to contact the band directly, or at least their promotions people? I'd settle for promotions. 3. I wanted to know if stuff like Kiss Ep, Orb in Dub, Absorb, Perpetual Picture Disc, and the U.F. Orb American single are still available. I know these have been OUT OF PRINT for a while, but I also understand that BIG LIFE had reissued some of the older stuff, much to the band's shagrin. So, were any of these titles included? If not any leads as to where I can get them. 4. Is the "Goldraush" accompanyment from the Love Parade available for purchase? German import? I'd also love a scan of the flier from that show if anyone can hook me up. 5. Here is a list of what I own: A Huge Ever Growing...(original ambient house mix) Little Fluffy Clouds UK (with ambient mk 1) Little Fluffy Clouds USA (inner master mix, heavyweight dub, etc) Adventures Beyond the Ultraworld USA (with shite Perpetual Dawn and only eight tunes) Perpetual Dawn USA (with solar flare extended, ultrabass I/II, etc.) Peel Sessions USA (love the huge rocks splashing!!!) Aubrey Remixes: Ultraworld Excursions USA (january 3 is my fave on this, what's yours?) Blue Room 39m 59s UK ("...Happy Birthday Mr. President...) Blue Room Germany (with excerpt 607, and Mad Professor mix of Towers... Looking for UK equivilent and the Blue Room Box Am also looking for the ambient mix of Towers...) UF Orb UK (including the Patterns/Textures OST, but no ART PRINTS...Anyone?) UF Orb USA ( incl. bonus disc with Frank De Wulf's mix of Blue Room) Assassin UK (even saved the paper disc announcing Assassin 3) Assassin 3 (with the mission sticker, of course) Towers of Dub/Blue Room Promo (on green vinyl AND cd!!!) Live '93 (Fluffy has a CUTE butt. I once got a postcard saying that there would be 4 NEW tracks on this. However, upon release, there were only Valley and Plateau. What's up with that) Adventures Beyond the Ultraworld ISLAND RE-ISSUE (finally the original Petpetual Dawn!!! What is the organ sample? I know, do you?) The Pulsating Sound of the Orb (Live show on CD, obviously a bootleg. The sound is not too bad. Includes the Opera Intro, LOTS of Rikki Lee Jones' interview with Levar Burton (they talk about Phoenix, AZ being on big suburb, irrigation ditches, and she makes horse noises!!! Very incriminating!! No wonder she protested!! Tacked on the end are Loving U remix/ Orbital dance mix of A Huge Ever Growing... Overall, I give it a 7 out of 10. Saw this and Morphology the same day. I picked up this. Still looking for Morphology. Anyone?) Pomme Fritz (I had just got back from Alaska when this came out!!! I immediately loved it!!! I know some don't like it. What do you think ? A friend of mine and I ate handfuls of valium and a pan of pot brownies and tripped out to this. I fixed her surround sound speakers, and we had a blast. We're Pastie to be Grill You is her fave. If I had to choose, mine is Bang'er 'N Chips. We nearly pissed herself when we heard "You've just had a heavy section of electro shock therapy..." Any one know the sample? I do, it's pretty obvious. By the way, E COLI, the sample you were asking about is NOT Charles Manson, but is the Reverend Jim Jones. I don't know if you know the story, so forgive my re-telling if you do. Jim Jones was a reverend who had a fervent, cultish following, much like that of David Koresh. He and his disciples were in Cental America holed-up on a compund. After weeks of negotiations, it was decided something had to be done. When Jones heard that the government was going to intervene he gave this speech about his guns, dynamite, etc. When a team of diplomats arrived at his compound, they were ambushed, and some were killed. Not long after that, Jones and his follwers drank poisoned Kool-Aid, everyone died. I remember being five or six when this happened. I remember seeing the news helicopters flying over all of these dead bodies...Since then I've been suspicious of organized religion. There was a movie about it done for TV, and Powers Booth played Jones, don't know if it's available. However the most complete, undistorted version I know of is on Concrete Blonde's "Mexican Moon" release. Johnette thanks Genesis P. Orridge for providing her with the sample. WHEW! Depressing, I know, but now you know.) Orbvs Terravm (Montange D'or is my fave I looking for the CD packge with full maps and the version with the paper sleeves if anyone can help. I'm also looking for as many remixes as I can find, be they on compilations, whatever...HELP!) Oxbow Lakes (I picked this and Pulsating Sound of the Orb on the same day. I like the string arrangement most. I know the Balanascau (SP) Quartet as done Kraftwerk tunes this way, as well. UK readers: I know that Radio Three had a live session with Instumental in July, where they played Eno as well. Is there anyone who can hook me up?) Peel Sessions UK (No Fun kicks ass, I once got up on stage during an Iggy Pop show when he played No Fun. When I heard that the Orb covered it, it was like a Sign From Above. Compare intro to Valley with We're Pastie...Hmmmm?) Aunite Aubrey (What can a say...) ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ As far as remixes go, I don't have many, as Colorado doesn't have a decent import store. I have BAD (The Globe), Mike Oldfield Sentinal (promo, with ONLY Nobel Prize Mix. I don't have Total Overhaul) Dave Stewart Lily Was Here (Space Centre Medical Unit Hum), I have Millwall Mix of Majestic anf Praying Mantra (edit)from Trance Europe Express 1, Reefer Spin in the Galaxy from Volume One. Plus I have the Aubrey Mixes available on Excursions in Ambience-The Second Orbit. I'm moving soon I am planning to get as many remixes as I can, the Little Orb Book is a good resource. I also have KLF Chill Out, Art of Noise Ambient Collection w/ DJ LX, Voices of Kwahn. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ That's about it. Definitely grab the 2CD edition! -- ::: Lazlo (lazlo@swcp.com; http://www.swcp.com/lazlo) # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Email majordomo@xmission.com with "info orb" in the message. # Postings must go to orb@xmission.com -- replies go to original sender. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Guess who *might* leave Loyola? I'm not sure if this was Orblivion material, but it was real good. Drum&bass that started off with a few simple loops and built up progressively. Lots of jungle sounds thrown in - very tight and danceable. LX was having a good time up on stage and he got people off to a great mood. Jack Danger came out next with MBM and pushed the envelope. They took their older material, like Helter Skelter and totally revamped it with layers of smooth synth and sample sounds. Expermental, chill-out, hard dance, trance, live singing - they had it all. Three screens behind them displayed various imagery - roller coaster rides through swirling colors, silhouettes of people with fire leaping out of their insides, lightning bolts and layered imagery (much in the style of Patterns & Textures). Wow, the show was fantastic. Don't miss it if you can. ;) -s. # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Email majordomo@xmission.com with "info orb" in the message. # Postings must go to orb@xmission.com -- replies go to original sender. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: mattski@MIT.EDU Subject: (orb) Orbital at Avalon, Boston, Nov 20__________________ Date: 18 Nov 1996 12:38:13 EST Just in case this did not go out already to the list: Orbital play Boston, Mass, on November 20 at Avalon on Lansdowne St. Not sure of time, but opening act is Spring Heel Jack with their "breakbeat bliss". # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Email majordomo@xmission.com with "info orb" in the message. # Postings must go to orb@xmission.com -- replies go to original sender. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: riboflavin Subject: (orb) nonorb-sunelectric album Date: 18 Nov 1996 14:31:26 -0500 (EST) i don't usually post too much, but i thought i remember someone wondering about a new sunelectric album- this info came out in the latest resonance records release list- A LP SUN ELECTRIC Present Apollo/R&S $21.99 Stunning new album from one of the original ambient house pioneers. This album takes tier vanguard sound several steps further as they layer intricate rhythm patterns over even more intricate rhythm patterns. Still laid up with this ear prob, I'm listening to Bandulu's "Assassin Mix", and I thought I would share this with you as it kind of erked me. This comes from the October issue of Q (Rerelases Section) AUNTY AUBREY'S EXCURSION BEYOND THE CALL OF DUTY: The Orb Remix Project Deviant DVNT 12 "The Orb's 1992 comedy space opus U.F. Orb was the high point of the whole ambient- Glastonbury-technopagan thing, a brilliant collision of Pink Floyd, Lee Perry, and Detroit techno. Since then, sadly Dr. Alex Paterson's prog-duboufithave largely SET THE CONTROL FOR THE HEART OF THE OWN ARSES, WITH FOUR RUBBISH ALBUMS IN A ROW AND CORRESPONDING DECLINING FORTUNES(emphasis MINE). This trace-spotters collection of remixes is a nice reminder of The Orb when they were great. Culled mainly from the '90-'93 period-when the industrious Dr. Alex and then-partner Thrash would mix concrete for you if you asked nicely -they apply the trademark Orb sound to 18 varied clients, from Primal Scream to Japanese bleep-ninja Keiichi Suzuki. Thus material's Praying Mantra gains rolling tablas and a febrile Apocalypse Now vibe, while pop victims Depeche Mode(Happiest Girl) and Erasure (Ship Of Fools)make contact with a filmic weirdness they could never summon unaided. For those listeners not on strong chemicals, the early Orb fought against prog- rock dreariness by leavening the wig-outs with funny samples (The Queen was a favorite) but also, tellingly, some rather sweet tunes. Call it crispy ambience." ****(out of five) Andrew Harrison According to Q scale, four stars mean: Excellent. Definitely worth investigation. Too bad about the rubbish remark, oh well... I only meant that I don't have the ability to copy DATs, that's all. I think the best opportunities for getting digital recordings of rarer Orb would come to 1.) those in the UK who may be able to tape a John Peel show or some BBC broadcast (I don't know of any Orb broadcasts here in the D.C. area, for example), or 2.) those with portable DAT (or MiniDisc, for that matter) recorders who can smuggle them into live Orb shows. I think they're amazing.... p.p.s. -- Now that I think of it...I wonder if Thiel & Loderbauer have day jobs, or if they do well enough just by making music & performing? onnow: Orb - _Dipping into the Cyberworld_ # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Email majordomo@xmission.com with "info orb" in the message. # Postings must go to orb@xmission.com -- replies go to original sender. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Dj bluE Subject: Re: (orb) (no ORB) DAT TAPES (NO orb) Date: 29 Nov 1996 12:14:58 -0700 (MST) On Fri, 29 Nov 1996, djdan wrote: > Ahhh, yes...Mini disc recorders are very cool, and portable (you can stuff > it down your crotch to get it in the club) but dont forget to bring a good > supply of batteries because they last about a half hour before they're dead. > djdan well, actually, Mini-disc batteries last for and beyond an hour at a time... I tape entire concerts on one battery, and one disc, but then again, no matter *WHAT* medium you use to record concerts, I guarantee that you won't get an entire orb concert on one disc/tape/DAT..what have you... Does no-one else find it repetitive to the extreme ???? Can you post the tracklisting for this? There isn't any info on it at the System 7 homepage apart from a small blurb saying that it includes Richie Hawtin's remix of "Alpha Wave" and the Doc Scott remix of "Interstate." BTW, I rather like the new FSOL (not that this has anything to do w. Orb). The single is phenomenal....
