I personally think the LX part was weak but the Mixmaster Morris half was brilliant - so I started trying to track down some of the bands mentioned (haven't gotten very far though). The first band I tried was Global Communication with their album 73:45 (or whatever it is) which has got to go down in history as one of the best ambient jobs ever (in the list with KLF's Chill Out, Orb's Ultraworld and FSOL's Lifeforms :) Anyway, I saw in my local HMV a whole load of these Mixmag CDs and thought it too good to be true, so I bought a Moby/Orde Meikle(Slam (with Stuart McMillan) - - plays our University disco every month or so (along with Andy Weatherall, Mr. C, Justin Robertson and countless others) - and worked on U.F.Orb (but you knew that already))...eh...oh yeah, and it is crap! So beware of these MixMag CDs. Although I will gladly tape the LX/Mixmaster Morris CD for anyone who is interested, just send me a tape of something obscure and I will send you a tape of it (although it might take me about a year or so if past tape sendings are anything to go by! Smiley knows what I'm talking about!!! :) If anyone is really interested, I think there is a copy of it in HMV but I will need a definite taker after that Auntie Aubrey's debacle (which left me short on my phone bill - still not paid...). :) Ronan FitzGerald - ---------------------------- u9350276@queens-belfast.ac.uk, Belfast, N. Well, I'm sending this message to my fave mailing lists since you might be interested in this. I've had a big response for those Orb cd-rs I'm making and I thought I'd do a whole series of artists also since I know many of you probably would like some of those cool 12" only mixes on cd, or you just don't want to wear out the vinyl. I'm eventually going to put my entire collection on cd so if you want a copy of stuff I have, let me know. The following is a listing of some stuff I was going to put on cdr for some of my fave groups. Let me know if you're interested in any of them (I'll customize them for you if you want.) Each cd-r is $15.00 (for anything you want and that includes shipping). I'm not going to do anything that's still in print since that's just not right, but I figure out of print stuff isn't too bad...If you have different suggestions for what you want, let me know. All 12" remixes are going to be cleaned with Cool Edit Pro and Sound Forge to reduce the noise from the original source. I hope to have the cds sounding better than the originals... All of the remixes come from white labels, promos, deleted or limited singles and stuff. I do have some Dj mixes, let me know if you want em. If you want to forward this to other interested mailing lists, that's okay, but I am trying to keep it low key....=o) Here's a brief listing of the bands you'll find: Check out the following page for synth artists: www.groovemusic.com/synthpop.html Artists featured: Art of Noise, Baby Ford (Rhythm King), Bananarama, Beloved, Boxcar, Brilliant, Gray Clail/Tackhead, Dead Or Alive (Fan the Flame 2, remixes), erasure, Falco, Information Society (Creatures of Influence, remixes), I Start Counting, Jesus loves You, Madonna, Men Without Hats (Interview), New order/Electronic (Until the end of time), Pet Shop boys, Pop Will Eat Itself, Real Life, Re-Flex, Propaganda, Swing Out Sister, Talk Talk, Lost Tracks and One Hit Synth Wonders... That's basically why I'm doing it as a trade only. I'm really not looking for a profit but just to fill another hole in my music collection. Right now, the best offers are two separate FFWD bids and someone has offered the Unidentified Frequencies of the Orb. I know that the FFWD is on my webpage but it's moved to a lower priority becase someone is making me a CD-R of it. I'd like to have an original but I'm leaning towards Unidentified Frequencies. I've checked out on the legality issues of this, and obviously it is illegal to reproduce copyrighted material without permission. However, if it is approved by the label and royalties are paid to the respective songwriter/artist, it's okay. The question still remains whether the labels will allow me to do this or not. I don't want to rob LX (or any sampled Orb artist) of any money he/they rightfully deserves and have already drafted a letter asking permission to do this and offered to pay royalties. If the answer is "no", I won't do it--plain and simple. It's a pain in the butt to ask 30 companies permission and I have a feeling most will say "no," if they even respond. I don't think they'll consider repressing Aubrey or Orbscure Trax since the demand is probably not high enough--this is the only way many of you have of getting it on cd (unless you luck out on it used.) If they get their royalties for it, what's the problem? I hope they'll say yes. >In actuality, -most- Orb stuff isn't too hard to find. List action is getting rather slow. Time again for one of those ludicrous, potentially "nosy" questions, more for trivia than any real hardcore knowledge. So, here goes: What is the general age-range of the average Orb fan? I, myself, am 27. The youngest of the so-called X-Generation (per Douglas Coupland, Generation X is rougly those born between 1960 and 1970) I think the media portrays Generation X as those born AFTER this period, but it's just a goofy label. Anyway, I'm curious about this, because I (and presumably people of my "generation") had exposure to EMPTY-V, but was not "weened" on it. Hence, my musical tastes have nothing whatsoever to do with MTV. (In fact, I usually tended to hate everything on it....) I listened to electronic music "independently," if you will--no radio play, certainly no MTV rotation, etc.... I started off with Synergy, Wendy Carlos, Tomita, Tangerine Dream, and others...the Orb naturally followed. I would be willing to bet that most others my age and older discovered this stuff independently (with exceptions, of course). As for those who are younger (in their teens, perhaps), I would guess the exposure DID come from MTV...or at least dance music in general.... I guess I'm just curious as to what the average Orb fan's age would be.... (One of the most hardcore Orb fans I've ever met is my dad's age--around 50! I guarantee HE didn't discover them on MTV!) I guess another way of putting this question (or this might be a completely different question altogether) is: Do you like the Orb primarily because you like electronic music? Or do you like them primarily because you like dance music? *I* listen to them because I love electronic music. I DO like dance music, but I didn't really start listening to dance music (except New Order) until AFTER I listened to the Orb. I also was weened on electronic/progressive music and naturally fell in love with the Orb's sense of humor along with their incredible ability to transport the listener to wherever they were going. Noticed the recent suggestions for LX and crew....I wish they would collaborate with Jah Wobble again also. I live near Saugerties,NY and sadly missed the portion of Woodstock 94 with Orb...anyone willing to trade a tape of that show? I don't have any boots, but loads of Wobble, Gong, Czukay,Can,FFWD, Aphex Twin, etc. love stillife@juno.com _____________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail. Hello fellow Orb junkies (woo hoo, i love being surronded by people who have the same passion for the Orb as myself!), A copy of Aubrey mixes showed up in my mailbox the other day along with the 40 minute Blue Room/Assasins single...i was completely STOKED!!!!!!! My friend in Santa Cruz got extra copies and just mailed them to me. (I couldn't even believe it...i was droppin' jaw for about an hour!)........i am soooooo in love with the Youth remixes of Spanish Castles in Space.....such completely refined music...WOW!!! (Perpetual Dawn remix is pretty damn good too......) Anyways...i was just on the phone with a friend of mine that lives in San Francisco and she was telling me about this cd she has called 'Pink Orb'. Anyone heard of this? Apparently, from what i understand, LX and company remixed Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon and Pink Floyd wouldn't let them release it so it came out as illegal pressings (very few i believe). Someone please correct me on this story if i am wrong. Has anyone heard this? She got a hold of a copy when she was living in Australia. I am getting a copy of it burned onto a cd and sent to me very soon hopefully! I am really looking forward to hearing it!!! hope you all are having a great day!!!! *eschaton* "The flight director says get back in..." # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Email majordomo@xmission.com with "info orb" in the message. # Postings must go to orb@xmission.com -- replies go to original sender. # Latest Orb info: http://www.theorb.com/orbulletins.html -- look here first! ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 27 Feb 1998 18:14:14 -0700 From: Ron Miller Subject: (orb) AGES Hello Fellow Orbsters > > > I am 33 and was turned on to the Orb in 91 /92 (it's kind of hazy). > >There was a very large warehouse type club then called Carefree here in > >San Francisco.
