If one cover truly epitomizes the band, it's this one! i nearly died laughing when i loaded the page. However, i was supremely disappointed in Micky Mars- i can say for certain that the d&b style beat that comes in after about a minute or so was a big reason of that. I can't help it, i just DON'T LIKE that rhythm.. i'm way more into the way the orb makes complex organic rhythms out of subtle layerings of not-necessarily-drum sounds and such (a lot of this went on on orbvs and orblivion), and this stuff just sounds so uninspired comparatively. The chanting is really sort of obnoxious, it was obvious to me that it was from return to innocence, and i had always hoped that lx and friends wouldn't delve into this sort of fake 'world-music' influence that a lot of electronic acts incorporated years ago, because it seemed to make them hipper or more worldly while not actually making the music any better (deep forest or loop guru anyone?).. Anyway, other than the chanting and the d&b rhythmic style, the song had some nice orb-like moments.. i just hope 'cydonia' or whatever becomes of it isn't stuff like this- i also hope that micky mars isnt on the album! i keep hoping for the perfect orb album, and if it's to be this next one, that will definitely scar it! peace and orbness - -dan g # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 15 Sep 1998 12:03:58 +0900 From: FLYBOY Subject: (orb) HI errrr I'm new to this list, and the intro message said I should intro myself. Ian Astbury, the distinctive voice behind the influential heavy metal/ punk rock hybrid, has finally finished his long- awaited solo album, tentatively titled Transcendental Youth Cult. The album is about to go into the final mixing stages in a New York recording studio and will feature between 10 and 12 tracks, including a re-recorded version of a previously unreleased Cult tune called "The Witch." The album, which is slated for a spring 1999 release by Beggars Banquet Records, is described by Astbury as the perfect matrimony between electronica and his Cult past. "My fascination with electronica has been going on since about 1987-88," says Astbury. "It was really something I couldn't do in the Cult -- it wasn't really appropriate. [This album] is like a cross between the last Cult record and 'The Witch,' which was sort of an initial template. It was finding the right marriage of programming with rock and roll." Other tracks on the album include "Hi Time Amplifier," "Tonight," "Back on Earth," and "Holy Traffic." The album was produced by Masters of Reality frontman Chris Goss (allstar, Jan. 7), and recorded at Goss' Monkey Studios, which is a former porno film studio in Palm Springs, Calif. Witchman, a British programmer who has previously worked with the Orb, helped Astbury with the samples and loops that make up the majority of the drum tracks on the record. Former Cult and Holy Barbarians (Astbury's first non-Cult project) drummer Scott Garrett handles the skins on the one and only track with live drums. Astbury is currently putting together a live band for a planned world tour, which will include tunes from the Cult, Southern Death Cult, and the Holy Barbarians, following the album's release. Stay tuned for allstar's full- scale interview with Astbury. - -Kevin Raub any derivative works of this content must hyperlink to and credit: "Rocktropolis allstar News at http://allstarmag.com" _____________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail. This is how I got the files without using ftp (which would be much easier if you have a client). 1) right click on the web link. Click "properties". 2) copy the url for the .ram file (the streaming file). 3) paste this in your browsers url window, then backspace the last m off to get the .ra file. This is the file that contains the track. The .ram file is a short file that directs real player to stream the other file. Most of the time, the name used is the same, just the extension is changed to protect the innocent. 4) Hit the enter key, and your browser should ask if you want to open or save the file, click save and tell it where to download it. 5) Once its completed, you will have a copy of the file. This is also a really nice way to get the hi quality audio on a crappy connection. john goerner johng@usgravitics.com " Better Living With Gravity " # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ End of orb-digest V2 #107 *************************
