I currently have two cd copies in my possession... one is up for trade/sale, so drop me a line... as for a FFWD review, here is a quickie: (please note that most of this is hearsay and probably inaccurate) This album makes sense if you imagine F,F,W and D sitting in the studio during the mixing phase. Apparently they set up a couch in front of the mixing desk and all four of them sat there and twiddled away merrily in unison. In the beginning, many of the tracks had drums and percussion parts. Gradually during the mixing, D mixed out all these beats until it was an entirely beatless soundscape. Eventually the german F persuaded him to return the drums to some of the album, including the crashing "colossus". What results is one of the most bizarre recordings I own. The first song, "lucky saddle" is somehow reminiscent of speedboats... thats about as close as I can get really... It starts with CD 1 on one page and skips to the middle of CD 2 on the second page, then back to the second half of CD 1 and ends with the first half of CD 2 list on the inside back cover......odd. I don't think it's a misprint as the cover and the inside pages are different weights. The mixes on CD 1 aren't as choppy as I'd thought they'd be. It flows nicely (except for track 13). I still wish they'd have done complete songs and not a 'mix'. Mickey Mars is OK too. Not like a 'regular' orb piece but good. Towers of Dub (original mix) is great. I don't know, really. Usually, I don't buy them because I prefer to listen to a whole album rather than a collection of singles. I like albums (or good EPs) because it has a continuity. A best of a group like The Orb is a strange thing. The Orb does (sometimes too much) long tracks, it creates an atmosphere. Sometimes, you get lost in it. And that's the point with the Orb. "Where is the tune ? Is it really music ?" It's like a soundtrack without images, because you do yourself the picture. Is "UF Off" a good start for beginners ? Is it a good introduction ? Well, yeah... It defines what is the group. It stays with the tunes, and the mixing creates the atmosphere. "Orblivion" had more tracks that any other Orb albums, "Ufoff" is like that. It's a "Keep the tunes strong" attitude... The Best of (CD 1) has 13 tracks. The choice of the Orbital Dance mix for " A huge..." is rather odd for me. Same thing for the Solar youth mix of "Perpetual dawn". And the "DJ Asylum" 7" edit which is the single version contained in the EPs (I prefer the album version). But this first album is a trip to different places. Is 3 minutes of Blue Room a good thing ? You recognize the track, but the Orb plane has a long way to go. You can't stay longer in one place at a time. If you want to have more, try the whole experience with the albums or the EPs. I think it's the message of the best of. It's an appetizer, but a good one... And watch out for the secret track of CD1 which is a new remix of Oxbow Lakes. I called it the Strange and creepy mix... The Rare tracks (CD2) is the other side of the Orb. I can say that the track listing is inappropriate. The Assassin mix is called "Chocolate hills of bohol mix" and is 1:15 long ! A chocolate hills of bohol edit mix... :) Same thing with the radio version of A huge... (0:58) The CD2 is more for fans, it could take some time to like it if you don't know the group. And Smiley was right, the Red X mix of Mickey Mars is better than the 7" edit. But the Montagne d'Or remix is too noisy for me... Will "UFOFF" be a crowd pleaser ? I'm not sure... Let's hope so... What tracks are exclusive to the best of ? I thought I remember reading (when FFWD was originally released) that Robert Fripp had provided the Orb w/ a tape of his Frippertronic improvisations, which the Orb then sampled & created new tracks around; that is, Fripp wasn't around when the tracks were made. I also remember Alex saying that about 4 FFWD releases were planned, including a dub release.Of course, they didn't get released. About the same time "Luciana" by Juno Reactor was released, this is a collaboration between JReactor & Alex, & is very different to any other Juno Reactor material, but not too far off from the Empty Quater (aka MT Quater) releases that Ben Watkins did w/ Youth in the 80s. Anyone know just w/ Alex's contribution to this cd (on Inter-modo #2) is?
