Actually, if you listen closely, they make reference to his suicide, and that it ruined their u.s. tour. I heard Orgy play this song live opening for Love & Rockets last month. Definately the best written song they played... And they tied in Dead Or Alive's "You Spin Me Round" line at the end. Clever, but not who I wanted to see. Now Frank Zappa, the Dead Kennedys, The Cramps--those people are genuinely "laugh-out-loud" funny. Granted, Zappa and the Dead Kennedys were pretty much straight-edge, so their humor carries through pretty well to those who are sober. (The Cramps, on the other hand, I can't say for sure....) I understand there is supposed >to be some humor in the music and titles. I see the title Star 6&7 8 9 is >part of a joke but I don't find it that funny. Well, the Orb is able to evoke many emotional responses in me, from paranoia to chilling out, to me jumping around... but laughing isn't one of those so far. I think the idea behind the whole "joke" thing is that the Orb have never taken the uppity attitute that their music is high art - witness the "elephant taking a dump" at the end of UFOrb or that weird "logness" thing at the end of Pomme Fritz... - - Bobby # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 28 Apr 1999 12:43:58 -0700 From: neptune@slip.net () Subject: (orb) i laugh in your general direction >>Anyone know what's so funny about the Orb? >Well, the Orb is able to evoke many emotional responses in me, from >paranoia to chilling out, to me jumping around... but laughing isn't >one of those so far. wow! i'm shocked that no one has jumped to defend the humour in the music! i mean, some of it may not induce rolling on the floor in fits of giggles, but come on kids! does Perpetual Dawn not evoke even a chuckle from any of you? no one cracks a smile at the phone prank at the beginning of towers of Dub? how about the Bart Simpson sample at the end of Live 93? i think the orb's music is thoroughly infused with humour, if not downright silly at times, and i wouldn't have it any other way!!! i mean, really, who would want the orb to have an image like (geez, potential flame material here) Oasis - who are so EXTRMELY serious about music and image, etc and don't seem to have much of a good time cause they're always busy being *very serious musicians*. and along those lines, good on them for allowing LFC in the volkswagon commercial - i mean the image of a silly little car hovering above the ground and spinning in circles like a UFO! how appropriate! whew! glad i got that out... =) rachel # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 28 Apr 1999 15:50:54 -0400 From: Brad Subject: Re: (orb) i laugh in your general direction Bart Simpson sample? (i WAS gonna say you're on crack but i was concerned my good-natured prodding would be misconstrued as a flame.) to me the 'hair' sample in '72' is good for a guffaw or two, in the same way terry bozzio's banter in 'wait a minute' from sheik yerbouti was ... or jello howling 'i can almost taste your dandruff' on 'the prey.' also chuckle-worthy are the intros to 'perpetual dawn' and 'towers of dub,' as well as the 'electro-shock therapy' snippet from snl featured in pomme fritz. i also giggled when i saw 'em live at organic '96 and they threw the 'mister and missus america ... there is no cause for alarm ... america has not fallen!' into the live 'delta.' it couldn't have hurt that i was on a variety of psychotropic enzymes at the time, but that is neither hither nor thither. much respect, steve np - assassin - live 93 _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
