The Place that you were reffering that Sells Metro Tix would be the Clubhouse which is right next door. But if you go to the website http://www.metrochicago.com you'll see schedule on the side, and LX is listed there with a link to buy advanced tix... But if you click on the link.. It'll take you to ticketmaster with a listing of all kinds or Metro and Smartbar shows. But there is no listing for LX. Smartbar is a really small Dance club/Bar beneath the Metro, but hardly ever gets that packed. My only word of advice is get there early. But Not to early otherwise you'll stand outside waiting and freezing. Anyways, smartBar hardly ever gets supercrowded. Some people know about LX and Some don't... Has anyone seen > that movie Crossroads with Ralph Machio and steve plays the devil's > gutarist? sorry way of track ===Steve Vai was guitarist for Frank Zappa for a while in the early 1980s. He was often credited with "stunt guitar." His ability is legendary. From what I understand, he was taught by none other than Joe Satriani at the Berkeley School of Music in Massachussets. There is a story (probably untrue, but it makes its point well) that Vai and Eddie Van Halen were having a "face-off" to see who was the better guitar player. Eddie went first, and proceeded to playing the most incredible guitar solo ever heard. Vai went next, and proceeded to play, note for note, an exact replica of what Van Halen played--and with one hand! ;-) The only Vai albums I have are _Flexible_ (I do *NOT* recommend getting this album first--it's VERY experimental) and _Passion & Warfare_, which is friggin' incredible! Some real "stunt guitar" on that. Fans of Van Halen, Joe Satriani, Frank Zapp, Yngwie Malmsteen (I botched that spelling!), and Tony McAlpine would probably like Steve Vai. Later! What can I say, I would rather listen to Vai with David Lee Roth (or get a blow torch enema for that matter) than to listen to Van Halen with Sammy Hagar or that new bloke, J.Q. But if you want a REALLY great ambient guitar album (NOT techno), check out Pictures of Earth & Space, by Jim Bartz. It was on the Audion label, went out of print, and came back in print. I don't know if it's still around or not, but it is DEFINITELY worth picking up. VERY atmospheric. Virtually the entire album is recorded using processed electric guitars, but sounds mostly like synths.... Great music for a lazy, sunny Saturday afternoon.... Actually, Audion DID produce a guitar synthesist by the name of Neil Nappe. I have an extra cd-r of this, if someone wants to trade. It is I'm not particularly into Psychic TV these days, but... You must have picked up the "acid house" period anthology - a new badly put together 2CD set of stuff they released right around "Towards Thee Infinite Beat" in 1989, I believe. Yeah, it certainly didn't age well, you're right. But, you must consider that they hadn't really done anything dance-oriented or even particularly electronic before that, and they have put out a *lot* of albums since the early '80s. Psychic TV (Genesis P-Orridge) actually began as an offshoot of Throbbing Gristle, the seminal '70s industrial/performance art group (also included Chris & Cosey and Peter Christopherson from Coil). And although PTV released an awful lot of music, it was less about music itself and more about the message within the music and lyrics, the concept. PTV was the main musical side of the "Temple Ov Psychick Youth", a weird worldwide religious/magic cult. Oh, and: The Orb sampled from "Kondole/Deadcat" by PTV on "Ultraworld". It's those trippy helicopterish sounds, I can't remember what track the sample is used in. > a fool's attempt at making techno with guitars and just, ah man. Bach was one of the greats to do this. This theory of mathematical equations was developed by Pythagoras in the fifth century B.C. Musical intervals were represented as ratios of whole numbers. If you'd like to learn more about mathematical relationships in music you can check out Joseph Schillnger's System of Musical composition. I believe System 7 and The Orb use equations when producing there music. This goes beyond the sampling aspects of their music. I agree, I am always interested to hear the views of new list members on the Orb or other artists. After all thats what what this list is for isn't it? I have picked up several Cd's by other artists whom I would not have bought if it wasn't for other list members opinions on them. I don't have a problem with most off topic posts either, this should be a place where we can share and compare our views. If we all sat around waiting for news of new releases or tour dates it would be boring and frankly quite shite. Can't wait for the 13th, and BTW whoever was asking about advance tix for Chicago, I got mine for LA from ticketmaster over the phone, so I can't see why they shouldn't have Chicago too. What the hell? A lot of what we listen to now is definitely influenced by PTV. I will admit, however, they have had their weaker moment, the first of which comes to mind is the aforementioned double CD. BUT! Don't not, even for a second discount them based on one so-so release. There is defintely some good PTV out there. My suggestion: Toward the Infinite Beat/Beyond the Infinite Beat. Some may feel "Toward" is more of that "sad attempt" at techno, but when you pull it apart beat wise it is amazing, which is what makes Beyond the Infinite Beat incredible. The mixes based on the original songs are even better than the originals. Additionally how can you dismiss a band that wrote a tribute song to the late (and SORELY needed in rock music now) Ian Curtis of Joy Division. When I listen to that song and then about the graphic and tragic end to this fabulous life, I lose it every time. Genesis P-Orridge is an amazing artist and has been through quite a bit as a musician from what I have heard. I had heard (lister confirm) at one point he had all of his instruments confiscated by authorities for decimating "harmful information" via his recording. Should the legend prove true he then allegedly created an album using found objects - things laying around the house. I REALLY want to believe this. I never was able to find this release. Who am I kidding I didn't bother looking, as I had a VERY hard time finding Toward in BFE, Colorado. Additionally, his solo album on Wax Trax recordings is just as amazing as the Doubting Thomas album, release on Wax Trax at the same time. This is going to sound odd, but in my not-so-humble opinion, the PTV release with "Pain" "E-male" etc. is one of the best techno albums of all time. I am not even sure if it was ever officially released and wish I could remember the title straight off (VERY long night), but I know that those listers who know about this album will come to my aid and remind me of the title. BTW if anyone knows what CD I am talking about and can find a copy for me I would greatly appreciate it. It was nicked from me by the same idiot who took my original print of KLF's "Chill Out" cd and Angelo Badalamenti/David Lynch's "Industrial Symphony" video. I had the fortune of seeing PTV and Skinny Puppy in down town Phoenix ( of all places!!!) back in '88 and that show changed my life forever. PTV is known for challenging assumptions about everything in life from music to spirituality and although I nod my head once in respect to matthew schieffer's opinion regarding the double CD, I HIGHLY suggest you check out some other PTV releases before dismissing them entirely. Dismissing PTV is like dismissing non Brix E. Smith era the Fall, you can do it but will most definitely be eating your words later on. Peace, Love and Detox Tea, orbette PS. I WILL find out the name of the PTV release with "Pain" and "Emale" and pass it on to the list as I feel everyone should own a copy of this PTV release if you are going to own one. # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ End of orb-digest V2 #260 *************************
