But if you want to, I suggest fresh batteries (Energizer/Duracell), 90m Tape (3 hrs in 48k & 44.1k modes), don't use autolevel, but make sure your meter doesn't clip. Stand still (mics pick up the sound best in the direction they face), point the mics toward the speaker stacks. The higher the mic position, the less crowd noise. Be wary of security. The more "Stealth" the setup, the less likely of being caught. Who knows, maybe LX will let you get a patch off the board. Gavin __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Who would you compare them to? I have to dial in my answer on this one, 'cause Autechre is right there with the Orb, probably higher, on my list. Their music is nearly impossible to describe. Try to imagine the type of music that a factory would make and you have a good start. These guys should be dubbed "industrial" music instead of those KMFDM types. They can sometimes drop something dance-like but *not* in the conventional sense. They rarely use vocal samples and their sound, completely opposed to the Orb's sound, is inorganic; it's metallic: raw iron, refined steel put into controlled static and all kinds of whirls, beeps, and bangs. However, despite the craziness that they can imbed in the music, the beat and the souunds are precise. They are one of those groups, like the Orb, that no one else can mimic. Most of their fans seem to favor either Incunabula, Autechre's first album, or like myself, favor Tri Repetae. But Amber is also a classic and it's more ambient and organic than anything else they have. All of their EP's are excellent as are their last two albums, Chiastic Slide and the self-titled one. However, those two are by far, the most inaccessible, and probably a poor place to start listening. If anyone wants to discuss more Autechre e-mail me privately; I'd definitely enjoy it. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ --"I took a course in speed reading, Joseph Jun 4-123 ESB learning to read straight down the Center for Complex Systems Research middle of the page, and I was able Univ. of Ill. at Urbana-Champaign to go through War and Peace in twenty Office Phone: (217) 333-4736 minutes. "amber" isnt quite as "grind-grind-grind" sounding as some of the tracks on "tri repetae" or their two new releases (not that these are bad albums - just very strange to a new autechre listener). speaking of their new releases, anyone else have their new ep7? i finally got around to getting it last week, and, like most, its pretty good. especially there's the second track: of course the name of it is meaningless (and i dont remember it anyway), but its the track with the distorted rap-like voice throughout. very cool effect. # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 18 Nov 1999 11:25:35 -0500 (EST) From: "Benjamin L. There were people who actually stuck their heads over the turntables as soon as LX slapped a record down, trying to read the label. LX was so cool about it - the theme for the evening seemed to be "what can you do ?" As I understand it, the board is a mixing deck with a turntable on each end. He would play a record on one turntable, twiddle a few knobs, then set up another record on the other turntable, listen with a special headphone that only had one ear-piece and looked more like a fancy telephone, mess around with the positioning on the record by slowing down or speeding up the record, then play with a slider bar which panned from one turntable to the other, demonstrating that the beats matched up on both records and creating a wonderful, combined sound. After sliding the bar back and forth (always in time to the music) he would push it all the way over to the second turntable, then rip the record off of the first turntable, put it away, dig for the next record and repeat the process. There were several instances where he played voice samples (maybe there was a third input for a DAT(?) player?), and once where he "played" the board, ending up with a very high-pitched shriek, which he allowed to echo for a full 30-45 seconds while he dug out and queued up the next record. And he still found time to make faces at us staring at him. He turned down an offer of a cigarette, and made a warding-off sign by holding up his index fingers to form a cross when offered a beer, but he did accept an offer of the herb he enjoys so much. He even had the guy standing next to me come up on stage and roll one from his personal stash, never missing a beat until an errant flyer landed on one turntable and wedged itself under the tone arm, bringing the beats to a temporary halt. It was a definite thrill to shake his hand at the end of the night. I just bought a scanner last week and my first scan will be the autographed copy of my Perpetual Dawn CD, which will be added to my website this weekend. Apologies in advance for any technical errors I may have made in trying to describe what I saw in laymans terms. I don't know how the music is produced - I just love the way it sounds. This was one of the reasons I initially had concerns that LX may have cancelled and we were in for a disappointment. Once we got inside, the club had several posters listing the scheduled events for November. No mention of LX (or anyone else) on Tuesday, November 16th and the cover charge was $5. However, both Paul Oakenfold and Doc Martin were featured prominently on dates later in the month. Cover charge for each of those events was $15. I do feel guilty for living in the suburban Detroit area and never seeing Derrick May or Plastikman. Oh autechre as well as stuff like aphex twin or oval take much listening to initially to get accustomed to, but the fact that EP7 (as well as the rest of his stuff) os so not based on samples, mre on totally generated noises, just freaks me out. You need to listen to that first track a lot of times. It's like this group Merzebow that my roomate loves, that I hated at first. It's this crazy japanese hardcore noise group. There's nothing even close to resembling rhythym, melody, meter, key, nothing. The first dozen or so times I listened to it, I had to turn it off after less than a minute. Then one time I listened to it, and it just clicked. I can't explain it, but it's really beautiful. Oh well... I have a lot of music I own that I hated at first. The JAMS: History Of for instance. Amon Tobin (whom I worship entirely now, GO BUY HIM!!!). Anyways, I think everyone on this list should be able to build up a good healthy love (or at least like) of autechre. Also check out oval, pan sonic, We (Ikui Mori!!!) and Lull (for the ambient heartbeat-style). # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 18 Nov 1999 10:35:32 -0600 From: John Moxness Subject: RE: (OT) Re: (orb) Autechre ? > speaking of their new releases, anyone else have their new ep7? i finally > got around to getting it last week, and, like most, its pretty good. EP7 is okay.. it's in the Same Vain as the LP5 or "Autechre" (the name is different all over the place and there are a lot of different versions of that album)... Lot of Cubist, Nordlike Noises... But I still have to Say My favorite is Chiastic Slide! Hands Down! This album Just kicks my ass every time i hear it. Especially the first Track! The accompanying Envane EP is really good as well.. Another one that I really get into that's about in the Middle is the AntiEP. DJarum it Great! For older stuff.. I'd really recommend Tri Repeta++ or Amber.. But for any of you Collectors out there. If you happen to have the release that is only available on Minidisc, I'd like to talk abouut Trading! How many people also find that the first album you ever own, or really listen to, ends up being the one you like most from a particular artist. And any albums previous to it seem less and less 'polished' as you go back in time, and any albums after it tend to seem more and more 'commercial'. That happens to me a lot. Pick just about any band/artist I really like a lot, and my favorite album is the one that first turned me on to them. *MoonDogg* - -----Original Message----- > Btw, EP7 is more like a full CD rather than an EP, I think.
