Turkey with Family or Stay for LX... Quite a debate i've got going on.. And I'm leaning both ways.. But in General.. I've been quite Bummed here in NYC.. Although it's only been my first week here.. But now looking forward I've got three more Months of this to go through. I've been trying to find things to do (instead of working day in and Day out).. And have had quite a bit of trouble.. like for instance I found out about the Warp 10year Aniiverary Show with Plaid. I tried to go, but was way sold out. And against my better judgement i tired to buy some tickets from a scalper for an Inflated price of $30... Needless to say the tickets were fake... I've had to stay through the weekend for work so i wans't able to go home, refresh, and Get more clothes (I only brought a week's worth and lost half of it in My last hotel Room)... And damn.. Now my work partner Checked us into this Corporate Hotel Downtown.. It sucks.. My partnet took the Larger bedroom which is mgnatudes larger than mine.. And Mine has a lovely view of a brick wall... No sun ever gets in here.. So I never know if it's morning or Evening here.. Really depressing.. The only thing that this room has going for it is an ethernet Connection, to a t1 line. And lastly. Ney York isn't exacly the friendliest of Cities... So, whats all this ranting, and rambling amounting to? Please, any NYC Folks here.. If you feel so kind as to meet me or give me guidelines of where I should hangout I'd greatly appreciate it. I've found one thing to try and Do tonight.. Trans-Am is playing tonight at Brownies.. And to quote Ice Cube, "... pimpin' ain't easy but it's necessary..." As frightening as this sounds, teenage girls are the US's most powerful age group (at least according to research done by NPR) in terms of raw spending. The Gen-X'ers who used to be the powerful lost their ranks as they got older and more conservative with their spending habits. (Being on the tail end of the GenX folks, I think it has more to do with not having as much time to spend the money.) Most folks pretend techno doesn't exist. A lot of people in my office have never seen any of the Cd's in my cube before and are likely to never see it again. I freaked out several people by playing "Little Fluffy Clouds" and showing them that the copyright date is 1991 - they all thought it was a special song created just for VW ads. On a positive note, a lot of the ambient/organic/techno groups are starting to make more headway. My sister (who is 31 and as top40/VH-1 as you can find'm) likes stuff like Loop Guru and some of the less aggressive sounding jungle. Some of my top40 friends find that they like goa/psy trance. (They just didn't know what the hell it was.) Basically, as artists spend more time exploring the mix of richer sounds (like trance) and some of the more mellow stuff that still has a beat (organic/jungle) you'll start seeing more of it. This will give some respect and recognition. Hopefully, seperate sections for it in music stores too. (I miss the early 90's for that reason -- the Tower near my parent's house had a special section just for techno.) Will techno ever be big enough to get its own radio station or TV channel? Not for a while (me thinks). Groups like The Orb are still too "weird" for most people and it makes them uncomfortable. The bad press and cheese played on mainstream radio doesn't help. I've seen two incarnations of dedicated radio stations in the LA area die because of lack of listenership. (MARS-FM and Groove Radio) My hunch is that the best you can currently do is a hip-hop/rap station that has regular doses of techno at scheduled times. The next best bet is college radio and Internet based radio stations. - -Steve - -- ______________________________________________________________________________ Steve Shah (sshah@planetoid.org) | SysAdmin/Coder/Gabbernaut/DJ/Writer/Minister http://www.planetoid.org | We're not dropping out, we're infiltrating. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Beating code into submission one OS at a time... # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 21 Nov 1999 23:43:56 -0600 From: "John Goerner" Subject: (orb) Speaking of car commercials I was wondering if anyone on the list knew what song Jaguar is using in their latest commercial, the one showing (I think) a S-series driving by pulling the letters off some dudes Wall Street Journal. I trust I'm not the only one to have a problem with the track 007 A Huge Evergrowing... (live in boston 7-28-97).mp3, which I've obtained from both the Moondogg archive and the Anthony Bryan site. It loads into WinAmp okay but plays only for about 8 or 9 seconds before going into spasm and thrashing about for a while before terminating. Opening it in Sound Forge with a view to editing only gets that first few seconds, and any attempt to convert to a .wav file (in whatever program) also only gets the same 9-or-so seconds. Which is a bit of a shame as this gig is one of the better items from the "Live" directory. My thinking is to try and get the file into some kind of non-music file editor -- maybe even a hex editor -- and try to isolate the corrupted section: chances are it's only a small glitch around that 9-second point. This is not going to be a pleasant experience, however, so if there's anyone who's already solved this problem, or if there are any audio hardhats out there who have a solution or suggestion, please pass it along. # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 23 Nov 1999 21:04:50 -0600 From: Martin Wallace Subject: Re: (orb) Audio surgery I actually had the same problem. Furthermore, whenever I put the file in the trash and tried to empty my trashcan, my computer froze. I'd restart the comp, and the file would still be in the trash. The only way I finally got it out of the trash was to restart my comp from the system cd, and then empty the trash. very strange. # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 23 Nov 1999 20:45:02 PST From: "E O" Subject: (orb) ra capture Does anybody know what programs are out there to capture real audio? - -Eric ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ End of orb-digest V2 #268 *************************
