Please be advised that reacting to statements like yours we have cancelled the release of the coverversion. Meanwhile the producers of the remake have signed a deal with BMG / Ariola. They will release it on CD maxi and compilations early february. We have no further control of what is happening to the track. Please see our email to UR dated 17.12.99. Mike & Rolando, unfortunately you were not able to get back to me personally. Some direct words from you to us could have avoided a lot of misunderstandings, wrong suspicions and excitement causing damage to both sides. Obviously you think, that it is our aim to make UR customers buy Sony records. Kind of paradoxical. We don?t share your point of view that a cover version of Jaguar makes you sell less records. The people interested in your original vinyl are way different to Sony buyers. People who have bought UR records will still buy UR records. In the past days we have received a lot of feedback from the underground to our cover. Apart from some people just abusing Sony Music with 4-letter words, many people express their feelings in a detailed and reasonable style. We understand that you generally disagree with the whole major company business. In this case Sony can be reproached for picking up someone elses idea for profit reasons without taking care of the attitude of the inventor. We realize, that even that we are save on the legal side and the reactions from the ?overground? to our version are euphoric, its commercial release would cause a damage to the relationship of the industry to the underground that could not be compensated. We see ourselves as a company supporting and benefitting from inventive artists. Instead of trying to benefit from the huge buzz that has been created, we have decided to respect your attitude and declare that we will not work any further on the Jaguar cover. Sony Music will not commercially release the track rather on CD maxi or compilations. We are quite sure, that a different company will use the idea and milk the cashcow. We are sorry that we have hurt your feelings. Finally at least the UR record will benefit from the story. We wish you good luck and a lot of sales for this classic piece of music. Not only that - any music released, distributed or supported by Sony -- Including the popular Ovum Recordings sub-Label -- will be boycotted and rediculed out of the underground circuit -- Music is not your whore - especially music as rooted in the people as techno and other forms of electronic dance -- we will not stand for this On the other hand, i will do my best to rip every release on the sony label into MP3 and replicate these files to kingdom come -- Sony's music will be free to everyone i meet. - -Q # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 10 Jan 2000 22:11:03 -0700 From: Lazlo Nibble Subject: (orb) ORBULLETIN: Orb Discography Updated # This is an Orb announcement from the ORBULLETINS mailing list. For example, I'm listening to The Dread Zone's album, 360 degrees, and the track which is playing is "The Good, the Bad, and the Dread." No, it doesn't sample "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly," but it *does* sample music and dialogue from "For a Few Dollars More." I happen to have the Mixmag CD with me at work today. Here is an updated entry for it: [Various: Mixmag Live Volume 9] CS: 1993 UK (DMC Communcations; MML9) CD: 1996 UK (DMC Publishing; MMLCD 09) [Side A: Alex Patterson] 32:40 System 7: Strange Quotations (orb mix) Suns of Arqa: World Peace A.D? Orb: O.O.B.E. (pool mix) Orb: Blue Room (ambient demo at mark angelo's) There is only 1 track for LX's set. It's hard to say where OOBE (pool mix) ends. It starts around 11:43. I think it runs to about 21:00, when a percussion solo (bongos, bells, rattles, etc.) takes over. This is shorter that the OOBE (pool mix) listed on the boots. There are some pool sounds at around 19:53 - 20:15. There may have been others earlier that I failed to hear. Other samples are a guy talking about wave theory "waves of waves.....", "Beatles on Compact Disc", and some guy talking about looking out over the water. One thing that comes to mind when I listen to this CD is that everything mixed is definitely in stereo. I thought LX's equipment was mono (or that he mixed in mono), which was the story given and to why "Auntie Aubrey" was mono. Hmmmmm. Hope this helped. He Refers to the Chemical Brothers as "current hot property" and the Orb as "ambient techno veterans", giving them 5 paragraphs as opposed to the Bros 1. He describes the Orb's set: "Granted, the dreamlike music crated over the years by Orb leader Alex Paterson and a varying crew of co-conspirators isn't meant to prompt high-energy exertions, From dub-the slow-motion echo-heavy reggae offshoot-Patterson takes basslines so low and loud they make your pant legs vibrate. Above them, he layers skittering, sharply punctuated drum beats and syncompated electronic melodies" Plus there's a photo of LX's backside, Andy Hughes in front, and a profile of Bil Le Blanc (I think) in the pyramid, and no photo of the Bros. Even better, the week before, the show got a mention in the header of the Tempo section, noting: "Finally the music world is catching up with The Orb, who will be playing sold out show at the Aragon Ballroom this weekend with the Chemical Brothers" and again had a photo of LX and Andy. It first appeared in recorded form in Alex's Mixmag session. Just a tiny piece of it, mind you -- but there are clacky billiard noises in the version of the track on Anthology II. I found them within Anthology II from a description in their location within the Mixmag mix, so the bootleg tracks are lifted from the Mixmag mix. Then later Alex used something much closer to the "original" pool mix (if there ever really was one) on disc 2 of U.F.Off. It would be so much easier to add if I had copies of the discs available for reference. :-) (Actually I'll take just the descriptions, really. One has the correct labels on both records....while the other has one record incorrectly marked with the same label on both the first and second record. Other than that , the cover and everything else is identical. Can anyone explain this to me? I am baffled. # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 13 Jan 2000 12:06:16 PST From: "That Ambient Guy" Subject: (orb) Hey, it's me again Hey. Long explanation. I went out to rent Blade Runner with my family and we came back an hour later to see our house surrounded by fire trucks. Cut a long story short, I lost my computer and internet access so I haven't been too active on the list lately :) My Orb cds are gonna be okay, I think, though and I've gotting a lot of other cds out of the thing, including the Peel Sessions, blah... Anyway, as if you people cared, right? Anyway, I'm back on the list with another email address. What's happened with Orb lately? Cydonia's coming out soon, and I heard the samples. Too tell you the truth, I really prefer the Orb at its most beatless and abstract. I love the fact that it sounds more chilled than Orblivion, but I'm still hoping LX and co will go back to their even more beatless roots, but on the other hand, who am I to presuppose I know what they should do, so I'll just shutup now. They'll remain my favorite band nomatter what, I think. When I listened to Cydonia I thought of Mixmaster Morris' "Global Chillage". Anyway, I'd tell you more but I won't. I got "Ocean of Sound" by David Toop, btw, really good interesting book. Okay, I'll be reentering the list, so, yeah.
