The first three songs (Once More, Promis and Ghost Dancing) sound realy 'down to earth', as if they try to prepare the listener to the Orbisation later on on the CD. They have got nice beat and baseline and the vocals fit in perfectly! Then it all starts. Mile long lump of lard is a great tune, with a mental baseline and kickin' beats. At 2.40 a mad synth-line comes in, lovely. Sample goes: 'you can feel the heat you can feel the flash, going mad' or something. Meanwhile smoked a nice big spliff.. Next song Ralf 's got a catchy synth-line goin' on backed with good Andy-style beats. It has a very nice break at 4.00! Freely Wheely got a very dubby feel to it. Deep basedrum and vocal samples are great. Superb Indian/Asian percussion.. The song ends a bit strange and abrupt. Yungle's got a slow start, then evolves into pretty good jungle'ish type of stuff. I loooove the wierd high-pitched vocal sample. It does something with my brain. This song must sound absolutely great played live. Drumloop later in the song sounds realy familiar, could be from a Massive Attack album? Terminus reminds me of the FFWD album somehow. Nice long FFWD samples in there. Then turns into a style together with a bass-slide (oof!) which wakes up the neighbours i guess. Strange but great 'orchestra' feel/samples. So there's my view. Nice album all in all. Does not appear on 'my best songs of Orb'-list, but who knows.... greetz.. After searching through several stupid websites (including the new www.orblivion.com - which caught me off guard - that=lame) - i finally stumbled on an archive of this news group and read some nice tid-bits about this Cydonia album. and since i didn't see this anywhere on there - i thought i should post it: looks like Cydonia is on sale in Japan - according to cdnow at least. I'm not a member of this newsgroup - and i don't really want to be right now cause i hate my mail box getting filled up and me never having time to read them all. i tried the orbital one for a while but kept falling behind. Anyone who likes the mastering job on it should get me some more work. =) "Stand By Your Man" is brilliant, but it's too bad they didn't let him put on the version that he wanted to put on. It's much stranger. Anyway, my main point here is that anyone who digs the Orb and is comfortable with the industrial end of the music spectrum should definitely check Not Breathing out. It's some of the more original electronic music out there, especially now that he's building his own gear. Though not sample-heavy, D. Wright's work does have an morphic, layered sound-montage quality that listees might enjoy, and he handily covers all the territory from deep-space ambient to pounding beatfests. The Aubrey mixes are just fantastic. I got the CD a year ago on Ebay quite cheap (20 bucks, considering I've seen it go for 50) and it's quite a far cry from Ultraworld, if I say so myself. "Perpetual Dawn (January 3 Mix)" is probably the furthest cry from the original, and sounds more like a different song. "Back Side of the Moon (Underwater Deep Space Mix)" sounds more like it's a remix of "Supernova at the End of the Universe" than anything. But my favorite on there has to be the Outlands mix, that's just perfection. Anyways, I think that the Peel Session of "Valley" is the best version of that song, period. I could never get into the version on OT and I usually skip it. The version on Live 93 still never really does it for me, but the version from the 2nd Peel Sessions disc... PURE BLISS! "Montagne D'or" on there is pretty weak I think, but I like it. I just always expect the fury at the end of the album version, and never hear it :( I'd say my least favorite Orb album is "Live 93". I still love it, but I just can't get into it as much as I do the others. It has it's charms (AHPEGBTRFTCOTU on there is just fantastic of course, and I love when it breaks into the Orbital dance mix and Outlands is just perfection) but I think "Assassin" is pretty weak, and "Valley" and "Plateau" just doesn't match the other versions. But now I think I know how people react to my live shows :) I pull off a tad too much noodling on stage, which must get old. To the guy who mentioned taking acid and shrooms to Orbus Terrarum and Pomme Fritz, try taking shrooms to "Asylum (Blood Sugar's Mix I)". It was possibly the funniest thing ever - -Dave P.S. Also I find myself playing in odd time signatures when I don't have a metronome clicking me when its the down beat. Tell me about it, I took this ablum on a family camping trip this weekend and enjoyed complete bliss in the wilderness and sunshine. It pretty much offered sanity while being forced to spend time with the family, much gratitude to LX an' Co. Is there anyone here that agrees with >me? : Occidental is mental! [nicknamed OXYmental] perfect example of the possibilities of sound, effects....perfect example of what i feel the orb is all about. erie melodies [almost circus like] over some slammin drums as it breaks down...the sounds and drums seem to vomit themselves into a dark orbient bliss [must have been the shroomz.] echo/reverb/stereo all kinds of things going on, i love the scary complex shit. but i can understand how the track might seem left unsaid on the list, it sure as hell isn't one of the more "easily digestable" tracks on the CD... but then again, if your subbed to this list you got some serious audio ulcers, am i right?yeah??huh??? i don't know about everyone on the list, but i have sort of developed a sort of sound to shape conversion in my head everytime i hear music. [i know there's a word for it, i want to say synthesesia ] i just wish there was some sort of jack i could stick in the back of my head so i can show "y'all." Dr. Winston???? still trying to dissect the Cydonia album so i can't really give any sort of review of it yet. i honestly can't find any time for the orb any more. [BLASPHEMER!!!] no really, i almost received "bad trader" status on ebay i'm so friggin lazy/busy. look at my ORB hotmail folder: messages new size Orb 278 206 666k Edit Delete but so far the album has been great. violin/string-like sounds in "promis" give me the chills. and of course the all around dubby feel, doesn't seem as complex as most of the past work, but it's groovin; nice little breakbeat that comes in.... "ghost dancing" is awsome! think of it as a remix, geez... possibly grab some of those old listeners who were scared away by pomme fritz, hehe... nice, smooth, dubby and digestable. it's bjork! no it's not. yes it is. no it's not... so far i am partial to the "Mile Long Lump of Lard" sound, that track is awsome, possibly my favorite on the album so far. i love the live drums feel, and then you almost hear some orblivion in the backround... but Ralf, bwaaahahahahahahahahahahaha...... madness. the little melody takes a little getting used too, but once you fall into the mix, it's all over. "Yungle" is slamming! "terminis" just flows and flows and flows... like a muddied lake? ;P ubiquity meets montague dor? enough! back to work. list moderator: i hope i didn't bounce any messages earlier, sorry if i did.
