I was watching VH-1 the past couple nights--100 hard rock bands of all time, you know--and King Crimson was one of them. They interview Robert Fripp, and I said to my wife, "Seven degrees of the Orb!" or something like that. One question, though: what the hell is Janis Joplin doing on that list??? Janis Joplin as hard rock? To even suggest that she's in the same league as, say, Slayer or Metallica is a truly sick joke. (nb: I'm a fan of Metallica and Slayer....) But I've really gotta check out King Crimson, to be sure. Never listened to them, but the clips they played sounded pretty good. And to really get technical, > you can even say Killing Joke, since LX was a roadie for them. That's not quite what I'm looking for. Why I'm asking is because I'm looking for other groups with similar style and influence. Orb that isn't Orb, you might say. What is the usual classification for Orb's music? I know from song to song it varies widely, but what's the overall classification? And saying 'ambient' doesn't cut it because that's too general. Ambient what? A friend suggests 'ambient dub'. I haven't really heard anything else calling itself that so I can't say yes or no. Okay I'm going to admit a secret. I'm playing around with the idea of learning to dj. I'm already a competent musician on viola, didgeridoo, and with some electronic instruments, and I'm building an analog synth for fun. But all of the other fans of electronic music in this city, with the exception of one or two people, are into such mind-numbing music as DnB, Gabba, Jungle, and other unmelodic banging-on-trash-can noise. It's not that I don't appreciate this music, but I find that it doesn't have enough signal, to borrow a term. It doesn't have enough 'going on' in the music for me to really get into it. That's what I love about Orbient, that every piece is chock full of sound in all parts of the spectrum, and that you can hear a piece over and over again and still keep hearing new things. So I'm looking for more music in the same vein as Orb. I need a big pile of music to play with, and I want to try mixing it together into 74 minute single tracks to share with friends. After enough practice maybe I'll start playing around with live mixing too. (I'm not into vinyl, BTW. I consider it a poor technology because of its destructability. Don't talk to me about analog, I'm making an analog synth. I know what analog means. Vinyl is archaic, IMHO, and although it does have redeeming qualities (ease of scratching, quick to move around in a song, nonlinearity, etc) I find the inherent destructability of vinyl displeasing.) > then we can go off on all the remixes they have done for others. Whoo. Lots of those. On that note, does anyone have a copy of the Floyd remixes? I've read and heard about them but not heard them for myself, and I doubt I'll find them at my local record store (unless someone knows something that I don't, which is entirely likely). Almost a lot of all the harder alternative bands came from this. "21st century Scitzoid man" could be the incarnation of Ozzie, STP, and Alice in Chains. "Elephant Talks" could almost Describe all of Primus's music. But they also do some real intersting stuff as Well. My Fav albums are "Lark's toungs and Aspic", "Red", "Disipline", and the WholeVVrrroooom!, Thral, Track Attack Series. Robert Fripp has also been involved in Many, Many other projects. The Leage of GentleMan, Brian Eno, FFWD, Projekt 2, and much much more.. He has developed a really unique ambient Guitar style that many have tried to duplicate! King Crimson has had many other amazing musicians including Adrian Belew (has done work with Nine Inch Nails), Trey Gunn, And Bill Bruford. Definitely would go well with the orb. Also Don't leave out any of Thomas Fehlmann's solo work. Good Fride is Great, and so is Six Eight Seven Niner (is that right?).... "I wan't to be a little fishy... Yes i do yes i do yes i do...." this song always makes me giggle! Another good one is Pole, but digs deeper into more staticy dub like stuff. his third ablum ( ibelieve titled "3") is really great. If your into this kind of stuff, check out some of the records on Scape, or Mille Plateu. And one that i recently found That I've been quite fond of lately, and I think all Orb fans should pay it a listen, MARUMARI - "The Wolves Hollow" This album tacks more onto the IDM arena of things, but it has a lot of orb sensibilities, but in much shorter and direct songs. But I thing most songs on here would flow nicely into the orb! PLEASE everyone, check out this album! it's really Good! Also, to add a little bit of fun Poppiness, and some soothing japanese vocals, Takako Minekawa's - "Fun9" (pronounced "Funk"), is incredible. Although it gets all over the place, i think there are some songs, that use a lot of voice samples in the same vein as Orbus Terrarum and such. There are some songs, that Really mess with my head (particularly when under any influence)... And then there is always Boards of canada, and Plaid, that make nice filler for such a set. I hope these help out. Why listen to Orb? I enjoy the fact that Orbient music... Is universally sub-genre... Alex keeps his rockabelly beats timeless yet personsable every time. It is like another personal relationship I have with God. (see below) Ordinary record contract could keep this fella from rockin' tha boat. (Moby and Chem Bros. besides...) Every and All other Dj's and "electronic-twats-with-keyboards" deserve to pay Alex and his family his due credit. Fact. He has inspired an onslaught of freaking techno - music out there!!! Most of the crude stuff selling is not close to me at all. His testimony is the fact that his name is Duncan. "Once More Alex is dunk'n his vinyls into prizmatic soundsystems." (another Orb Spotting!!!) I was listening to track #7 (Cydonia V1) while driving past exit 39 today on the Fl Interstate 75. While it was the most beautiflu slice of rythm I've heard in a while.... The fact that it is possible that it made my sky open up again was ethereal... To the pilot/passengers of the Cesna - May God's Grace be with all and R.I.P. To the pilot of the Military Aircraft who ejected - "Sick!!! Lets do tea!" I don't believe how important everyone on this list is to me. Anders "Muzz" Dam did you hear me?! They are lying to you. We've heard from the horse's mouth several times. If I were Juno Reactor, I'd be pissed at the promoters and venues pulling this crap. Not to mention how peeved LX and his management have to be at this point. Not to mention the disservice being done to fans of both groups. It is worth seeing LX DJ, and Juno Reactor live, so go anyway; but know what you will be seeing. You might want to take a copy of the ad with you to the venue, and give them hell about deceptive advertising, and maybe request your money back (after the show, of course). ;) Chris # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 17 Nov 2000 09:47:50 +0800 From: Kael Driscoll Subject: (orb) etronik some info and opinion from www.etronik.com: Proto ambient outfit The Orb return after a four year absence with a new single and album set for release in 2001.
