I'd like to get a copy. it's on the album 'Thursday Afternoon', funnily enough. it's out on EG (where Alex worked as an A&R person) and was made in 1985. Catalogue number: EGCD 64, or if you want the whole number up the spine: 0777 7 86474 2 3 EGCD 64 in 'a brief history of ambient volume 1', the liner notes mention 'thursday afternoon' as thrash metal by comparison to another long Eno track 'neroli'. 'neroli' is so minimalistic it's not funny. > If you want the most amount of variation while still remaining true to > the > actual theme there's no better example than J.S. Bach's "The Art of the > Fugue" (oder "Die Kunst Der Fuge" in Deutsche). i'll check this one out then. it does so amuse the classical music shop when i walk in like a long-haired punk off the street and beeline to the Contemporary section. i like Bizet's Symphony in C personally. even if it is hellishly repetetive, it's very playful. > > the Orb's really powerful stuff is easily analogous to a psychedelic > > experience in my opinion, examining the same concept over and over in > > different ways, turning it over, even how ideas will shuffle and merge > and > > split in your head like independent organisms. fish in a bowl or > > something. > > Indeed! During that time people migrated to areas of the UK to work in heavy industry. This is particularly true of Middlesbrough (North East England), which had and still has large imposing chemical factories. The Beer bit, well at the time Middlesbrough beer was rated as the best in the world - probably (sorry Denmark). The beer was so good that the locals demanded that they have access to it and special rationing stamps were included to restore the supply. This did not happen in the rest of the UK. If you have tasted crap from London (Courage) or Burton (Bass) you'll know why. The beer is probably Camerons though there have been that many buy-outs and post-buy-outs that it could be Castle Eden or one that I don't know. If you get the chance try it. Plus look out for Black Sheep Brewery bottles such as "Skull Crusher" or "Riggwelter". Those are brewed in Masham, North Yorkshire. Significance - maybe LX had a few jars or picked up some stuff from Tesco's. Then again, documentaries on the reminiscences of pensioners are always good for a laugh and decent sample material. It all started with a discussion (on another list for a local orlando, fl record label called 8th Dimension) when one of the founders, who is also an excellent DJ / Musician - Q Burn's Abstract Message - did a couple of gigs in Russia recently. Any way the thread winded it's way on in such way as to lead one of the member's - a native of Russia to talk about these raves they have, every month, inside of the old Chernobyl reactor. One thing then lead to another and Q Burn's brought up the movie Naked where the sample used on S.A.L.T. came from ("you know what the russian translation for wormwood is?"). So being the good Orbernaut that i am, i immediately chimed in with 'You know where that was sampled in....' type of thing :-) anyway this is the story he posted back. take it as you wish, but it does make for an amusing anecdote! check it out: - --------------------------------------------------------- here's a funny and true story ... not making any accusations with this, just a curious situation involving the above ... a long time ago our very own local boy DJ Mot released an excellent 12" on his Marvin Nash Records (http://www.marvinnash.com) called "110 Mistakes"/"Faith" ... if you have the Eighth Dimension compilation 'Selected Material' then you've heard the great Thrill Kill Kult sampling (shhh...) track "110 Mistakes" ... anyway, the other track on the single was a 12 minute downtempo opus titled "Faith" ... the track built into a spooky ambient breakdown which then had the entire 'end of the world' dialogue from 'Naked' playing underneath. A great effect, and definitely added to the paranoid, dark feeling that Mot was going for on this track. Well, anyway, this was the year that Alex Patterson from The Orb was touring with Meat Beat Manifesto, opening for them as a DJ. Mot was thrilled to DJ on their Orlando stop, playing the opening set before Patterson + Meat Beat ...needless to say it was a great show, and Mot was pleased to actually meet and speak with Alex Patterson. So, he took the chance to hand Patterson his new "110 Mistakes"/"Faith" single ... Needless to say it was a bit curious when a year later the 'S.A.L.T.' track was released with the same bit from 'Naked' used in a somewhat similar way ... !! I'm open to this being a coincidence, but we certainly got a few laughs out of the possibilities of this situation here! I again stress that I am making no accusations here ... the bit from 'Naked' is quite well known and it is extremely possible that Patterson did this on his own without even listening to the Mot single ... there have been quite a few times when I've found a bit that I plan on sampling , and I feel that the sample is so obscure that no one else would ever use it or sample it ... and then , a month later , hear a track with the sample in question in the record shop on two or three different records ! I only brought the story up because it was a funny coincidence ... anything else is your own guess , and that's all it will ever be because you won't ever really know ... we did have a good month or so of playfully kidding Mot about this after the Orb track was released ...! Thought you'd all be amused ... talk to you soon ... - - Q - --------------------------------------------------------- The funniest thing about this is that i was at that show! and know that both Qbam and Mot were in attendance.
